How do you get software that doesn't support the FT-980 to communicate anyway? Use hamlibs "rigctlcom" translation program. It will fool any software into thinking your rig is a Kenwood TS-2000 :)
Currently only get/set frequency and mode work with hamlib, but that is all that 90% of the SW out there requires. And even better ... additional functionality will be added to hamlib shortly.
