Anyone seen fans like mine?
Paul. There was a mod doing the rounds which involved adding an extra fan on the back plane. The reason was that there are two heat producing modules, the PA unit and the power supply side by side. It was well known that the main heat sink across the back and the single fan cooling the PA unit still resulted in overheating. My one has been converted with a separate bolt on panel with the extra fan colling the power eupply module.

Hi Paul. Well actually the second fan on mine is powered from a length of flex and an independent mains plug! Not sure if you could parallel up the original connection to the existing fan to run the second one. (too much current?) Can't understand why yours is connected to the ACC1.

Incidentally I am selling another one of my 980's (with SSB fault) on ebay if you're interested! Peter G0LQU Paul M0FOX wrote: I'd like to connect the fans internally rather than via ACC1 is yours similar, cheers |
Peter, I did see another 980 with the second fan fitted and that ran from ACC1, is the original fan 13v, maybe as they run continuously from ACC1 that was the intention, never had the lid off busy with other stuff....i'll have a peep on Ebay, cheers

Looks a flop at the mo but some time left. Best wishes Peter G0 LQU Paul M0FOX wrote: If it's the one from St Albans I'm already watching it lol |
I'm afraid I might be the source of this particular mod. Back in the day I did this to reduce noise when running my rig in contests.
A description of the mod, reasons, and temperature measurements are in the files section: Files -> 06-Mods -> Adding a super-quiet always-on secondary cooling fan.pdf? Hope this helps, -- -Mat Breton, N8TW |
