Hey Bill

Congrats on your radio and welcome to the hobby.

I would like to say that as you read the manual keep some notes in your own words as how things are done.

Soon you will have your own cheat sheet that you understand in a flash.

Merry Christmas to you too.

Welcome Bill from another newbie.

Speaking of which, I wonder how many others out there are like me.
I passed my Tech last Nov. and received my FT-60 for Christmas 2014 .
Since I have joined ARRL and a local club MARC in Mont. Co., MD.
In the year I have talked a total of maybe 10 minutes. I listen constantly and here some great conversations.
They seem to mostly center around equipment, electrical engineering, and high level configurations. I never seem to have anything to contribute so I listen. Don't misunderstand I am really enjoying the hobby and currently studying for General which I hope to take in 2 weeks.

I scan the local repeaters always looking for other newbies I might feel more comfortable reaching out to. Thoughts are rolling around in my head on how to start a newbie net in my area. Newbies wanted!

PS. I learn a lot from you guys keep it coming.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year

Welcome guys from an Old Dog!

?

A newbie net is a great idea as you will attract old dogs as well as newbies. I would suggest a local simplex frequency. You can meet and greet on a newbie net and find out what repeaters folks use. Then you can meet them on the repeater as well.

?

When I lived in CT, a bunch of us would communicate on 146.580 MHz FM Simplex on the way into work, If conditions were not good, we would use a local repeater. However, no matter what, we would always welcome newbies or those “new” to the group.

?

Welcome to the hobby and Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Gary

Well 10 mins is more than zero, so at least you are working on it.

There is such a thing called Mic Fright, where new members feel shy or self conscious about sending their voice over to some other stranger or friend. GET OVER IT FAST. You spent the time and money to get where you are your return on investment should be realized.

Joining the ARRL and a local club, these are 2 items on my Top 10 Things You Should do in your First Year as a licensed radio operator. Good job, and now you have 8 more to accomplish in 2016 and beyond.

I bet you are saying OK what are the rest: I want you to learn how to quickly set up your radio to operate on a certain frequency, with tone and without, with offset and simplex. And by quickly I mean with no help from any source like as if I asked you to turn it on and off. This is a skill that importing frequencies (aka programming your radio) via software to your radio has diminished but yet it is important to know.

I'll send you the rest separately so that I don't deviate from the topic.

As to starting a ?"newbie net in my area" ask your fellow club members to join, you need experienced Elmers and tenderfoots alike. Set a day and time and invite them to chime in on a certain repeater or simplex if applicable.

Go for it, push that PTT and announce your call sign. You will be amazed.

Thanks for the great info. I am looking forward to the New Year. One more question leaning toward rhetorical. Is it normal to want to purchase bigger better rig when I have hardly talked on the one I have? ?lol

As far as HT's go, you just keep buying more expensive ones till you get
one that is too complicated to use, then you put that on the shelf and go back to
the last one you could understand.? Thats why I have a FT60 still.

I have 9 HT's. But I still have and use my FT-60 from time to time, which was also my first purchase. I went straight from my test to HRO and purchased it the same day. It is, hands down, the easiest radio to program in the field. I think my second purchase was a portable J pole to increase my range and reception. It was more than adequate as my "base station" for quite a while. And the 3rd purchase was more batteries and a speaker mic.?

The only real Achilles heal on the ft-60 is the mic and accessories jack. The 4 ring plug has to fit correctly otherwise the accessory won't work or the radio sits in an open mic condition. People use rubber bands and other tricks to get the plug to stay in the jack. I find the Kenwood 2 plug configuration to be more reliable.?

Welcome to the hobby. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Find a local club and get involved. Join ARRL. Go to Field Day. Buy used to save $$'s. (My mobiles and most of my HF stuff was purchased used.) Find an Elmer. Become an Elmer for another new Ham. Have fun!

I'm curious... 9 HTs... with the FT60 being the first. There haven't been that many new and exciting ones since, so I'm curious as to 1) which others you have and 2) why one would need NINE of them.?

For solid 2m/440 local performance, the FT-60R cannot be beat.

The Kenwood TH-F6a adds dual-receive capability, and the 220 amateur band.?
As well as receiving SSB.

The Kenwood TH-D72a adds true dull-duplex ops, plus integrated GPS/APRS
functionality.

But you have a great rig with the FT-60R - ENJOY IT!

I have 3 hams in the house. The rest come under the previously mentioned "illness" clause of being a ham, to an extent. You will go through a learning curve of figuring out which radio and features work best for you. It is also hard to resist the $35 price tag of some of the lessor Ht's. And you will ultimately probably pick one up.?

The FT-60 has a single VFO. Many of the other Ht's that are common today are dual VFO. And then in that space there are "dual watch" and "dual receive". The latter typically more expensive than the former. Now that I have a couple dual receive radios I will never go back to dual watch.?

Currently I have: ?(some are in pairs)
Yaesu FT60r
Anytone Tech TRMN-8r
Anytone AT3318UV-A
Anytone AT3318UV-E
Baofeng UV-B5
Baofeng GT-3

My daily carry is the 3318UV-E. It is a tri-band HT. Shortly I will probably be selling off the dual watch radios. But because they are so inexpensive they can come in handy in a potential "disposable" situation, like a canoe trip or some other event where your gear could be lost.?

Radio brands are like sports teams or politics. My mobile and HF gear is Yeasu. Some folks swear by Kenwood, or Icom, etc. There is not one right answer - only that it meets your needs and works for you.?

Ok, makes sense, then. Had you mentioned three hams in the house than thinking of it as 3 HTs per ham it doesn't sound so unusual.?

I like the idea of the "cheap" radios so you're not that upset if one gets lost or destroyed.?
