Battery woes
Have two ft60s. ?First for about ten years and original factory battery works great. ?Then couple weeks back, got distracted, set it on roof of car and drove off, never to be seen again. ?Sad feelings. ? Turn to the second 60 about 3 years old bought without a battery from local ham otherwise NIB. ?Bought two Chinese batteries off Amazon and now a no go. ?Hard,Ed ever used, one still in white box. ?Neither the drop in charger that came with new one or the 12 bold car charger will work. ?Let it charge for hours but never gets beyond 6.2 holding volts. ?Key up and it dies. ?Yet with car charger plugged in, it reads full charge voltage and works fine, so long as connected to 12vdc source. ? So now need new battery. ?Appreciate referral for the best, cost not an issue. ?Really miss that first one, she was my go to baby. ?Seems I am Kate to the battery parade here. ?Tnx in advance. Mark. Does the new battery has an opening on the bottom right corner? I bought a battery a while back and had the same issue you are describing. Just needed to cut through the sticker with exacto knife to expose the last battery case so it makes contact with the charging pin in the back of the radio.

Green sticker but thr contacts make contact. ?Cradle is SBH-13. ?Plugged into power, testing with volt meter to the charger terminals show no voltage. ?In any event no charge using the lighter plug into the bench power supply. ?No go. ? ?Fwiw, the batteries are PN?

I just ordered a Lithium battery for the FT60 from radioshop888 for $30 via ebay. Comes with its own wallwart. Haven't even used up the first charge yet. Radioshop888 seems to have a good reputation. 73 wa2nub R From: "washoelaw@... [FT-60]" To: FT-60@... Sent: Thursday, December 1, 2016 7:35 PM Subject: [FT-60] Re: Battery woes

Tried to order but see it is shut down due to owners health. ?Hope they are ok. ?Looking at the several ft60 batteries on the list, will go elsewhere, darn. ?Suggestions for the best model? ?Tnx

You might think about buying the battery tray, which holds six AA cells. Then fill it with Eneloop Nickle-metal-hydroxide?cells. Greater capacity; more recharge cycles over their life; holds charge much better when in storage, much cheaper in the long run. If you often need to replace batteries quickly, think about getting two trays. I buy mine in combo packages (from Costco)--comes with a 4-cell charger, and typically 10 AA cells plus four AAA cells and, depending on the package, adapters for D and C cells as well. Two packs give you charging for all six cells in an FT-60 set at once (plus room for two other cells) plus three sets of six cells for the radio (and a couple of spares).? (Note that the online products at Costco don't necessarily match what's in a "brick and mortar" store and that the specific pack contents does change?from time to?time.) Some hams on here have reported that the AA cells may come in two different capacities and the larger ones might not quite fit the FT-60 and battery tray. You might want to search the forum for those reports so you don't get the wrong ones. (I think someone may have even reported how to fix that problem, but I am not sure.) Good luck and 73, JERRY, N3AA |
Note that my previous message might not have been clear: I buy the batteries and charger packs at a Costco warehouse--they are also available from Costco.com and, most likely, other suppliers. Panasonic owns the Eneloop brand now, but they bought it a year or so ago from (I think) Sanyo. The FT-60 battery trays should be available at places that sell the radios. 73, JERRY, N3AA |
开云体育Do you know if the battery you purchased is configured to work with the drop-in charger that comes with the later model ft-60?

Jerry, No it does not. The battery contains it's own charger circuit so removing the 'guts' of the drop in charger and wiring the wallwart directly to the salient contacts would work. Make sure to label the charger for only a LiPo battery, as dropping in a NiMh battery by accident would/could make for some interesting pyrotechnics effects! 73 wa2nub R From: "Jerry Stein stein525@... 开云体育Thanks for the response. ?I still have a factory battery on a newer ft-60 that works well plus two battery trays for AA batteries. ?Guess that will carry me for a while.

Jerry, Update! 1/ The battery I purchased from Radioshop888 is a LiIo NOT LiPo! ??? A slight difference in final voltage. 2/ The included 'charger' is? 8.4 vdc 1000ma SMPS. wa2nub R From: "Jerry Stein stein525@... [FT-60]" To: FT-60@...
