I am not sure what was wrong? After playing with it for a while, it seemed to be locked up with "save" flashing and a memory symbol(as shown in the manual on page 31--something like "Eun"). regards

Yes, I have a couple of ft-50 radios and I have the spring pins for the battery contacts. Those commonly go bad as well as the power button.

it could be only a gummed up switch pad I believe those switches are a carbon filled rubber pad on the underside of the push buttons that makes a circuit on the pcb and over time the pcb gets gummed
