Re: Nickel-Based Batteries [consider LiFePO4 accumulator]

NiMh packs, properly maintained: 1,000 discharge-charge cycles.

Lithium: 350.

If you live in extremely cold regions, Lithium perfoms a bit bettet.

If you want to charge ?a pack?and leave it un-used for six months, Lithium will hold its charge longer than NiMH.

I do not understand hams' blind infatuation with Lithium chemistries for HTs.

Re: Nickel-Based Batteries [consider LiFePO4 accumulator]

I always get a smile when I read things like this.

I went through the Agency's school at Camp Peary.? They talked about planting bugs in foreign embassy's and consulates during construction and not being able to get back inside to change batteries in the bugs later.? The solution: the technology EXISTED to build batteries that would last years, and years, and years.? That was what they used.? They said the reason why that technology is not available to the consumer is because battery companies want to sell batteries.

That was in 1994.

I also remember in high school auto shop in the early 1970s the teacher told us that the 100 mpg carburetor had been invented.? He said the design was purchased by the oil companies and locked away in a safe never to be seen again.? Why?? Because they want to sell gasoline.

I'm sure this type of thing exists elsewhere, too.? It's like what I tell my wife often: be very careful before you throw away something just because it is old.? What you buy today to replace it will not be the same quality as the item you tossed away.

It's sad, but true.? We complain about saving the environment and yet we live in a disposable world...

Re: Battery FNB-83 disassembled

Please do not use the gold screw connections to measure the accumulator pack voltage - this won't work.

Always use the silver connections to measure the accumulator pack voltage.

The FT-60 CHG terminal charges with about 200mA whatever the accumulator pack voltage - up to 10 to 12V.

-

I have just disassembled a FNB-83. (do not unscrew them, it does not help you disassembling it)

Connections seen from back and with the latch-landing and gold screws at bottom.

The silver connections at the top directly connects to six NiMH AA accumulator in series; plus(left) and ground(right).

Between cell 4 and 5 (from ground and connected in series here) there is a thermostat marked: IP505BC-B 80C. ISUZU 12C.

The leftmost gold screw connects to plus through a power Schottky diode - SR240. Physically placed between cell 5 and 6 (not connected here). ( )

The middle gold screw connects to ground.

The right screw connects to small-signal glass diode to ground. Physically placed between cell 2 and 3 (not connected here). Possibly used for end-of-charge temperature measurement.

Non of the gold screw connections are used in FT-60.

The FT-60 CHG terminal connects directy to the cell 1 ground (minus). According to the FT-60 service manual the CHG terminal charge with about 200mA ( (2.0V-0.6V)/(6.8 ohm) ). Whatever the accumulator pack voltage - up to 10 to 12V.

Thats it.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the info. I just wanted to verify if it was a 1.7mm x 4.1 plug before I purchased a few.
Looks like MOUSER wants $1.60 for the plug and then Ebay China ripoff sellers want you to buy a qty of 10 and even spend more.

OK, thanks again Dave.

The jack does cut the speaker and mic on the radio when a plug is inserted but I tested it and it works. Good call though! I think I’ve narrowed it down to the pre amp or amp but need to test that theory.?

If the internal mic goes through the jack, that could be a single point of failure which would take out both the internal and external mics.

A quick test would be to try transmitting and using the DTMF buttons (i.e.: the numeric?keypad).? If you hear tones on the receiving rig, you know it is something in the mic circuitry.??

I like the extra frequency coverage too.108 to 999 (except for some cellular frequencies). FT-70 receives from 108–580 MHz.

You can adjust the squelch on the 70R by pressing two buttons and turning the knob on the top.? Fairly simple if you do it often enough to remember.? Look at the manual on the web.

It's always fun window shopping though for a new radio. Lots out there to choose from.

John, maybe adjusting the TX Deviation in Alignment Mode might help?

I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would cause those values to change on their own but stranger things have happened.

The service manual explains how to enter the Alignment Mode, if you don't have a copy of the manual, you can download one from the "Files" section of this group.

Here is a link to a video showing the process,

I have a pdf detailing the process somewhere on my computer but I can't locate it at the moment, but the video shows the same process.?

Maybe that will get you squared away.
