Re: My FT-60 problems

As much as those radios cost me, as well as the brand name headset this is very disappointing.?

The furnished short antenna has what local Hams call "negative gain". It is sad that we need to spend even more money on aftermarket antennas to reach local repeaters or simplex. As I can physically see my local repeater antenna, not being able to hit it is frustrating.

Batteries need to be upgraded to LiFePo if possible. The charge levels are dying with the NiMH and the price is higher than other radio models and brands.

I have tried three different Yaesu brand headsets and the plugs do not stay in place or maintain connection.
Some of the events where I volunteer required some kind of headset or earpiece, and the radio connection does not stay in place.
I have seen several comments to that effect from other reviewers.

The channel selection shifts on its own.

A great case, a very heavy radio, and mediocre electronics.

Re: AA NiMH batteries, input on brands

Thanks for the input everyone, it is much appreciated.? I like to have firsthand knowledge of products from people that have used them versus reviews on websites.? Not that the reviews aren't truthful but using a NiMH cell in a tv remote doesn't give a full picture of it's performance for this application.

Again, all of the input has been very helpful.

My experience with FT60 is quite different.
The furnished short antenna has what local Hams call "negative gain". It is sad that we need to spend even more money on aftermarket antennas to reach local repeaters or simplex. As I can physically see my local repeater antenna, not being able to hit it is frustrating.
I have no issue to access a repeater on 2m and 70cm that is ~25miles from my place with the factory supplied antenna even from my sitting room.

Batteries need to be upgraded to LiFePo if possible. The charge levels are dying with the NiMH and the price is higher than other radio models and brands.
Again, no issue here. I have two FT60, one has a genuine Yaesu NiMh pack about 7 years old. The other one was repacked with Ikea Ladda NiMH cells. Both can go for days. I have not much to compare with but against Baofeng UV5R they will last almost twice as long.?

Some of the events where I volunteer required some kind of headset or earpiece, and the radio connection does not stay in place.
This is very annoying, I use a rubber band around the connector and feed the external mic cable below the belt clip. Helps a bit.

The channel selection shifts on its own.
There is a keypad lock, one can set it to lock not only the keys but also the channel selection rotary encoder.

Yes, thanks that is what I will do. However, I want to make sure it is not the radio. Down the road, I plan on ?getting a new FT-60, as this one is around 10 years old.. Until that day comes, I have a 1 year old FT-70. Which works great,

OK, wasn't sure what that meant, thought it was something to do with the radio.

As for your battery, I would bite the bullet and get a new Yaesu FNB-83 you have the drop in SBH-13 charger right??

I knew, from the price, that this was a cheaper price for a battery of this type. However, when you are on a fixed income, anything priced lower is worth a try. Big mistake on my part.

The battery arrived and I installed it into my radio. The voltage read 7.5 volts, so I decided to charged it. After about 6 hours, it still read 7.5. volts. I turned it on and just ran the scanner and did not transmit any. I ran it down to about 6.3 volts. I again charged it and it ran back to 7.5 volts. This time, it only took a couple of hours and was down to 5.5. volts . I called the company and they said they would send me another battery. I about a week, the batter arrived.

Same thing, 7.5 volts. I transmitted into a repeater to get a radio check. I then turned the radio off and back on. The voltage read 6.3 . I put it back on the charger and now it won’t get any higher than 6.7 volts.

?

Before I call the company and complain again, I thought I would ask the group, if this could be? problem with my radio. It reads fine when I hook it up to my chargers and I can transmit while using my auto jump box. This tells me the radio is OK, but I still think I need to ask the group.

Re: Will new antenna fit ok

Thank you Andrew, well I got a new Diamond SRH-77ca today and it is quite an improvement on receive when compared to the stock FT-60r antenna. Also hitting repeaters I could not key up before. Have not not done a lot of comparison on tx mostly on receiving.

I will consider your input, good idea. I am just happy I can hit a few repeaters full quieting now.

Will be testing more on tx tomorrow. Very happy with the big improvement though on rx. There is a slight curve in the top portion of the whip, not really that bad, but it is there. All of them might be this way because of the lenght of 15"

Gary,
Can you put a full wave loop antenna of about 80inches of wire on a window facing the intended target??
Coax feed on the side for vertical polarisation.

Clint, terrain is a big problem. I am at a low elevation, there are a few repeaters on 2m/440m I can hit, but I come in scratchy. What I really need is something like a 5/8 mag-mount in my attic, but I have a few physical limitations preventing me from getting up there. Also not sure how to get the coax from the attic to the basement.

I looked in the basement for a gap in the soil pipe to see if coax would fit along side of it, but there is no room. Don't have anyone near by to help. Can't put anything out side.
I'll probably end up looking up there myself the best I can, and see what I can come up with.

Thank You Bob, very helpful. Got a feeling I am going to need a set up like you ham friend. SRH&&CA will be here tomorrow. I will try it out, if it doesn't work out I can just send it back to amazon from a local store that takes amazon returns.

Glad your set up is working good for you.

Re: Will new antenna fit ok

I live in a 2 story condo.? I can't ping the usual repeater I use from inside, even with a Diamond SRH77CA antenna.? But if I walk outside, I can reach it from there. (Similarly, have a Diamond X50 in the attic, when I connect to it with the FT60, no problems reaching it with 5W.)

I know of a different ham that is much closer, but can't reach the same repeater from inside the house with just an attached HT antenna.? She uses a simple mag-mount antenna inside, attached to a steel cookie sheet as a ground plane, and gets through just fine that way from inside.? She also has a short, flexible coax jumper cable running from the HT to the magmount connector, which removes the stress from the HT connector.
