Re: Repeater question

I just installed the Android app on my tablet. ?It looks like Repeater Heading is the direction from you to the repeater. ?The app uses GPS to determine your location then lets you know where the repeaters are in relation to you.

I have an app on my iPod touch called Repeater Book which comes from RepeaterBook.com. Assuming it is accurate, it sure is helpful.

When I see "Repeater Heading: north" does this mean that the main radiating lobe is pointing north? Could not find the answer with Google.

Re: not very exciting start

I’ve noticed the same thing in MY area (Los Angeles), which USED TO BE really busy. But, over the past 20 years, with the proliferation of cell phones, texting and Facebook, etc., it seems that there’s not as much chatter on the radio as there used to be.

One formerly popular repeater here, which has coverage from slightly north of Los Angeles all the way down to San Diego, remains quiet nearly all day now. When I first got my license, in 1986, this repeater was so busy you couldn’t break in no matter how mars you tried. It was constant chatter 24/7 on that machine. I’ll spin the dial and go through all my 2m and 440 repeaters I’ve got programmed in my radio and often won’t hear a darned thing on any one of them.

These are the times.

On the plus side, it’s almost like having a private repeater whenever you want to have one since nobody else seems to be on it anymore.

I think I have the frequencies and offsets plus PL set up right for the repeaters that are nearby but heard no traffic. I said a few CQs followed by my call sign in each channel but got nothing. I know I am transmitting because my voice came in on my scanner. That doesn’t mean that I unlocked the repeaters correctly or that my offsets are right. I’ll try again in the morning.

Any suggestions?

Kevin,

A few nights ago I was outside with my FT-60 and heard a lot of chatter from CA. The frequency matched a repeater on the White Tank. Not sure how that all works but the discussion was great – a technical call in discussion. I will check out the New Ham Net on Thursday!

Listening is good.? It doesn’t take long to understand the flow of the QSOs.? I also remember other HAMS being very patient and welcoming with me as I got started.

The other thing I would highly recommend is to join a local HAM group.? Join in the field day or other activities they participate in.? There is a wealth of information available just for the asking and you gain a lot of experience just by having fun doing what HAMS do.

OK, so this is getting exasperating.?

?

My FT-60R has suddenly started receiving my local airport’s ATIS broadcast (120.775), and all other aviation frequencies I have set, very poorly, with tremendous background static, making the ATIS broadcast completely unreadable.? This happens in all locations, in or out of the car, with several different antennas.? It also happens right at the base of the airport tower, where the broadcast is the strongest.? It also happens on battery power or 12v adapter power in the car.

?

My dedicated aviation handheld transceiver (King KX-99) receives beautifully in all situations, right next to the FT-60R.

?

Now, here’s the kicker.? When I do a complete reset of the radio back to factory settings, then manually tune 120.775 it receives the broadcast BEAUTIFULLY.

?

As soon as I reload my RT Systems database with all my frequencies and banks set (which I’ve been using all along), it goes back to the unreadable static when tuned to the ATIS on 120.775 (and all other aviation frequencies as well).

?

Big mystery.? All opinions and theories welcomed.

Re: Airport ATIS Broadcast Receive Problem

If you have incorrectly set the Operating Mode to FM for your aviation memories, that could certainly account for the issue you're having.

When you reset the radio, the mode for the aviation frequency range is correctly set to AM. Then, when you write the program information back to the radio, the Mode goes back to FM.
