Are we discussing the front panel marking versus the printing on the carton? My panel reads only "FT-60" and the radio behaves like the R that I expected. I suppose Yaesu didn't want to produce and inventory two different front panels merely to distinguish the R model from the E.
However, I just bought what I thought was an FT-60R from HRO and
received an FT-60 (no R) on it, or the factory box.
It was advertised as an "R" but I didn't receive an "R" model. I
was trying to resolve why, or if it meant anything, (maybe old
stock?).

There is no "FT-60."
The FT-60R is a model meant for US distribution.
?FT-60E (now discontinued) was for the European market.

The CD-16 was offered for HTs that used NiMH packs ... I do not believe it is "Li-Ion-aware."
The ?charging algorithms for those chemistries are different.
?Will it work? Yes - but, if, indeed, a NiMH charger, you will not realize the total number of discharge-charge cycles compared to properly charging it. And considering Li-Ion are only rated at 300-350 complete cycles (compared to 1,000 for NiMH), proper charging is even more important.
I wonder if someone could
enlighten me of the differences between the 2 models above?
Your attention is a appreciated.

I was given an FT60 but no charger came with it. I bought a Vertex commercial desk charger CD-16 to charge the NiMh battery that came with the radio. Seems to work fine with it as I guess several Yaesu/Vertex battery models including the stock battery that came with the FT60. I just bought the Amazon? Lithium Ion battery and the charger seems to work with this battery also. Is anyone else familiar with this charger or currently using it? Wondering why the two different model numbers for the same charger. Mine seems to charge all the various batteries in? about 1 hour . 73, KE6JZ
I recently bought a Yeasu speaker mic SSM-17A to go with my new FT-60R. I first started using it by holding it close to my lips but speaking across it, not into it. This is how I have always used my ham mics. However I received some reports that my audio was too "hot" and experimented with holding it 5 - 6 inches away from my mouth. This resulted in better audio reports. However, this is not how I would like to use the mic. Has anyone had comments about the FT-60 audio using this speaker mic? I have not yet been able to test with using the front panel mic only. Any comments are welcome.
You can certainly use Chirp and a generic cable if you'd like, but there's an FT60R option available as well. This software has a few more nice features and is specific to the radio. It comes in either Windows or Mac.
You need a specific trrs connector and usb thingy. I aquired one on ebay with a few switchable ends so it works with other rigs too. Chirp worked very nicely and even allows really neat other setups, banks (9), like having 10 radios. Follow the manual to setup the ft60 to the programming mode.? Rudi
I'm not deeply technical, and like to keep things simple.? Main rig is FT857, and MicroHam TNC thingy.? Usually 40 Meter CW.? I have a newly purchaced used FT-60r, taking delivery tomorrow.
1). I'm wondering if I can use my Elecraft KX3 USB control cable (TRRS) as a programming cable for CHIRP?? Would it hurt anything if I just plugged it in and tried it out??? I'm an experimenter - but I'll give it a miss if there is a possible risk.
2)? I've got a splitting sound patch cord -? Female 3mm (TRRS) and splits into two marked male ends:? ?1 MIC - TRS and? 1 Earphone - TRS.? ? ?I have traditionally used a simple Sabrent Soundcard ($10) for portable communication with the KX3 - works very well!? It just takes a Sound In TRS and a Sound out TRS 3mm plug.? ?I'm hoping that I can find a way to keep it that simple without need of a DigiRig device.
