Glad you got it sorted.

Be careful measuring high frequency on an oscilloscope, the input capacitance comes in to play and severely?derates the maximum voltage capability.

So what readings do you get when you use the ext power jack?

Re: Yaesu VX-150, FT-60R and SBH-13 Charger Stand and NiMH Battey Pack Life

You can set the transmit power level. If I remember correctly, if the power level is set higher than the battery can support, the voltage collapses & the radio powers off (& perhaps back on?). That's on ft60s from 2009. YMMV

I know on my 60R there a a auto power saver
?that when you are hitting a repeater on high (5W) power, and you don't need 5W it cuts the power level back. Maybe when you measure your output with a watt meter this auto feature is kicking in. Just a thought.

Yaesu VX-150, FT-60R and SBH-13 Charger Stand and NiMH Battey Pack Life

k6whp

I have two venerable VX-150s (opened up for CAP use) and an FT-60R and have been charging them on the SBH-13 battery charger. Of late, I have noticed that in high power mode, all three are only putting out about 1.5 to 2.0 watts. The batteries are about 1400-1650 mAh and are very old -- about 4-5 years though little used.

Could I reasonably expect better performance and higher power with similar batteries (i.e., 1400-2000 mAh) and otherwise what would be the recommended course of action to restore the three HTs?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Battery Pack Gaskets

The big question: what unusual conditions did the failing gaskets experience? Temperature?extremes? Mechanical wear? Solvents? Mine are as good as new.

Does anyone know of a source for the battery pack gaskets?? They aren't made well enough to outlast the batteries, unfortunately.? My radios are getting damp inside in drizzly weather.

Is your external mic jack cover still good? ?I had a lot of water get in mine due to a major downpour. Fortunately, the radio dried out with zero problems afterwards.?

I don't know if it's still available, but years ago I modified the leather case for a VX-150 to accommodate the FT-60.? It was a simple mod almost anyone could do.

The mod instruction instructions were on the moderator's web page.

The feature I'd really want is to have a USB jack ON THE PACK for charging, but the easiest hobby way to do that (4x14500) would be 2/3 the NiMH capacity. ?Commercial LiPo could be better.
I hate cradles, and, like has been said, even if the radio would charge the pack, you'd be stuck with a C/10 type charge. ?Doesn't HAVE to be the case, but they didn't put a dV or dT charger in this radio.

Lotta reasons to go Li. ?More reasons to go LSD like Eneloops. ?But I think we got stuck with 1500 NiMH so they wouldn't die a quick death charged C/10 with no termination.
Sadly, the commercial or even OEM pack is a tight squeeze to fit on the thing, so modifying the pack isn't something I'm personally going to try. ?I don't hate 1500 or the cradle _that_ much.

Re: Desktop charger

Both of my FT-60E charge the battery via the DC-In socket however I do not use it. The internal charger circuit is rather very rudimental. There is no end of charge termination implemented. It is basically a constant current source and unlike FT817 there is no timer to stop charging.
