Hi All. I am an ignorant newbie to this hobby. I have an FT-60R. I have read the manual till I am blue in the face. I have a sort of Dyslexia which makes me a slow learner. Does anyone know where I can find some sort of dummy? training for this radio. Thanks Larry?

Re: Battery woes
Does the new battery has an opening on the bottom right corner? I bought a battery a while back and had the same issue you are describing. Just needed to cut through the sticker with exacto knife to expose the last battery case so it makes contact with the charging pin in the back of the radio.

Battery woes
Have two ft60s. ?First for about ten years and original factory battery works great. ?Then couple weeks back, got distracted, set it on roof of car and drove off, never to be seen again. ?Sad feelings. ? Turn to the second 60 about 3 years old bought without a battery from local ham otherwise NIB. ?Bought two Chinese batteries off Amazon and now a no go. ?Hard,Ed ever used, one still in white box. ?Neither the drop in charger that came with new one or the 12 bold car charger will work. ?Let it charge for hours but never gets beyond 6.2 holding volts. ?Key up and it dies. ?Yet with car charger plugged in, it reads full charge voltage and works fine, so long as connected to 12vdc source. ? So now need new battery. ?Appreciate referral for the best, cost not an issue. ?Really miss that first one, she was my go to baby. ?Seems I am Kate to the battery parade here. ?Tnx in advance. Mark. I used the VAC-370 for over ten years. No problems.

The BOTTOM LINE is that if you're not making it with 2W and an improved antenna, then you will probably not me making it with 4W TX power. It's all line-of-sight ops ... I regularly hit stations 3-600 miles away (amateur satellites and the ISS) with 2W TX power and an FT-60R ... WITH a better handheld beam, of course.?

I may have missed this in a prior post relative to the chrger discussion.? However, I have an earlier FT-60R with a wall wart.? Sometime back, I obtained a VAC-370 drop-in fast charger. (I also have aricraft and marine h/t's utilizing the same FNB-83 battery...)? The VAC-370 uses the CD-29 base and the PA-49B "wall wart". So far, I have not had any negative effects from this.? Is anyone aware of any issues with the VAC-370? Thanks, David AG6E From: "clint@... [FT-60]" To: FT-60@... I more-than-double the time between charges on my FT-60R by turning DOWN the TX power to 2.0W - and using a Smiley 270A antenna and speaker-mic. Speaker-mics help with battery life: With one on your shoulder, you will be turning the audio! SO - that is one way to double-or-more the time between charges with stock 1400mAH NiMH packs. Want twice the amperage? Maha has 2700mAH NiMH cells. Properly charged, they should give you 7850-1000 complete discharge-charge cycles. Use a better antenna and turn down the TX power - they will last a l-o-n-g time between charges. BatteriesAmerica.com have a few NiMH packs - up to about 2300mAH, I believe. Don't know how old your FT-60R is ... if pre-2013, it charges through the jack on the side of the radio with a dumb, constant-rate wall wart - NOT the way NiMH should be treated. You will achieve the maximum number of discharge-charge cycles from a battery chemistry f you also acquire a charger that has the proper algorithms for that chemistry. If you have a newer FT-60R with the desktop drop-in stand, there is one increased-capacity BatteriesAmerica NiMH pack that is physically a little thicker - and may NOT fit in that intelligent charger. Call or email them to make sure.

Re: Charging the FT-60 with the desktop cradle or is there another w
Thanks for all the ideas and links! I have a 2012 FT-60R and the EXT DC socket on the side both runs the radio (with or without the battery) and charges the battery. The newer ones (I have bought 3 more for friends and family) don't charge the battery, just run the radio.?
I found a lot of confusing and sometimes contradictory info on the internet (no surprise) so I have sent a few detailed questions to tech support at yaesu.com. Haven't heard back yet.? Regarding battery eliminators, some have noise suppression circuitry and I suspect others don't (they don't talk about it if it's there). |

Re: Charging the FT-60 with the desktop cradle or is there another w
My FT-60 is one of the "older" ones, and I have occasionally taken the battery off the back, and plugged the radio into the wall with the supplied charger cord. Jackson might not have that luxury if his radio is one of the newest batch. But I don't have a drop-in charger, so we're even. :)

I would like to keep my FT-60R on constantly and scanning the frequencies I'm interested in. Does anyone know a safe way to power the HT constantly while it is on. I don't want to use up the batteries while I'm sitting at my desk, of course. |
