Re: Charger Problem

My understanding is that the FT-60 has no internal charger. Am I misinformed? I have a newer model purchased less than two years ago, and accirding to the manual it runs off the DC power plug but does not charge the battery.

Search the site for details on the charging plug broken tip in the radio.

The FT-60R does not have an internal charger. You must have something
else going on. A bad wall wart or bad battery, perhaps?

For reference....

FT-60R's manufactured before early 2013 came with a wall wart that can
be plugged into the DC jack to charge the battery.

FT-60R's manufactured after that can not be charged by plugging a wall
wart (or a cigarette lighter adapter) directly into the radio. The
charging scheme was modified to comply with a California law requiring
charging devices to automatically shut-off if the charge voltage is over
5v. Apparently, Yaesu removed the connection from the DC jack to the
battery to accomplish this. These units are supplied with a drop-in
charging cradle (with auto shut-off) that is powered by a wall wart.

Re: Charger Problem

Call Yaesu Tech Support. It's a free service. The radio does not have an internal charger that I know of. They have the wall wart chargers.

Re: Programming using Chirp

I have been using the FTB-60 program from G4HFQ Software with my FT-60 for years.? It has a built in Comport Detector Routine that helps geting them set correctly.? I think the price is $15.? There is also good information about cables on the website.? (http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/).

I have also used RT systems software, and Chirp with other radios with no problems.

When travelling, I keep two memory banks. L1 - bottom of two meter band U1 - top end 2 meter band
and L2 bottom end of 70cm band with U2 being the upper end. Running memory scans will cover it all.
I also monitor simplex.

Dennis,

I look up the repeaters for the locale I'm going to and program them in the radio. I also include the two simplex national calling frequencies of 146.52 VHF and 446.00 UHF. Their are also numerous Intertie networks such as the Cactus Intertie or the Central Region Intertie. You can Google 'ham radio intertie systems' and see even more.

I travel often with my FT-60, I have a cupholder mount for it & use a 1/4 wave mag mount antenna for rental cars plus a 1/4 wave whip. I use the RT Systems programming software to program it & before I go I check online for open repeaters in the area I'll be visiting & program the information in the radio beforehand. (The RT Systems software makes this super quick & easy). I also monitor the 2 meter National Calling Frequency 146.520 MHz while traveling.
