Weak battery?

Less than year old no matter how long on the charger max voltage on turn on us 6.8. Tx a couple times and shuts down.
Yet my other 60 is 5 + years old and charges perfect and hold the charge for long time. What am I missing?

Thanks

Re: FT-60 User's Manual

"Alerm" is Japanee for "Alarm" - See "CTCSS/DCS Bell Operation".

Hey Rick, ?most of us print a second copy of the manual from the file section in this group. ?If you have current Adobe reader you can print in booklet form, 8.5" X 5.5", 2 pages per page, double sided and then put the copy in a small binder. ?That way you can mark it up, highlight, put in tabs for pages you will frequently reference, etc. and not mess up the original in case you want to sell it (NEVER). ?

I forgot to mention ALL THREE of my ham radios are Yaesu: ?FT-60, FT-857, FT-890, ? I'd buy an 817 and 8900 if my wife didn't see them, he, he. ?I just bid on a 20 year old FT-530 dual-band H.T. and lost - they are selling for 150% of what they cost new, go figure...

Go ahead and get the RT-SYSTEMS programmer and cable, will make the occasional 'reset' easier without loosing all your memory settings.

You'll have a great time with the FT-60. ?

I’ve been pouring over the FT-60 manual and am impressed with its clarity not to mention the feature set. It also seems to free of poor English and typos. However, on the page showing the various symbols that can be displayed on the LCD (page 3 in my version), it says “Bell Alerm Active”. What’s an alerm?

Dave,

?

Having travelled extensively across the western and central part of the US, I find that I plan my route and then I try to plan which repeaters are within 50 miles or so of my mobile, and which of those repeaters are 50 miles apart.

?

Of course the distance to the various repeaters will vary depending on what you are using. If a handheld (which I am assuming since you mentioned at one point that you just got your FT60 and this is the FT 60 group), I would limit that to about 5-10 miles from your intended route.

?

I would highly suggest that you get a regular mobile type radio and mount it in your vehicle, both for safety (to avoid having something becoming a flying, damaging object…as well as to increase your range).

?

I use this website ?? ?to find repeaters and find that it is pretty accurate as well as free. Yes you can pay to get any of those travel repeater software programs, but I prefer to just find the repeaters and then put into my radio BEFORE I do any traveling, that way they are there, and you don’t have to do any programming on the fly. I think you will find hamobiling a much more enjoyable experience if you do this, then you can concentrate on driving and talking instead of having to constantly search for repeaters and worry about trying to program your radio, finding the correct PL tones as well as discovering that some repeater you can hear and you are assuming a standard offset, instead has a non standard? input frequency.? You know now this in advance and already have it programmed into your radio.

?

Good luck on your travels and be safe out there.

Rick, you are ahead of me... I just bought one.? I figured with the price of a magmount antenna (I think I paid around 30 bucks) it wasn't worth my time to make a mag mount antenna.? In fact all my mobile antennas are ones I purchased.? As for the antennas at my house, when you start getting into HF antennas it's usually so much cheaper to build it yourself that it pays off in the end.? I think everything at my house is homemade, or something I obtained from someone else that was homemade, the tower Included.

I tried the rubber duck in the car around phx when I got my first ft60. I would recommend an external antenna. Once I did that it really increased my communication ability. The problem was that no one listened to the repeaters I could hit. And from inside the car I couldnt hit shaw butte or the superstion repeaters. With a mag mount I was fine.

There is an HRO in phoenix 43rd and dunlap I think. Thats where I got my first radio and magmount, it was about 25 bucks. They sell the connectors and adapters you will need as well.

Hi Rick:

The farm I visit is northwest of Marsden, and I meant no handheld repeater coverage. I didn't think anyone on the list would actually know the area. :)

TheFT-60 is the only radio I owned last summer, and it couldn't hit a repeater. I can't remember if I was using the quarter-wave mag-mount yet or not. I did have a tape measure Yagi, though, and it couldn't find anything either.

I will consider the 857 and contact you off-list if I can afford to be interested.

Thanks!

Any mag mount quarter-wave antenna should be a huge improvement over the rubber duck, especially the rubber duck inside a car's Faraday cage.? I don't have a specific brand recommendation, but I do recommend getting an external antenna.? If it's just for the FT-60, you don't need an antenna capable of handling high power, so consider that as you shop.

?

Some anecdotal evidence: From my home, I can see the local repeater I most often use, on a hilltop about 2 miles away.? I'm in an?area with excellent coverage.? With a homemade?rooftop jpole?(copper cactus), 500mW is reliably full quieting, and I don't have equipment that I can turn down lower than that to see?just how little power it requires.? With the rubber duck antenna, standing outdoors, 5 watts is?reliably copyable, but not always full quieting.? Take the rubber duck inside the closed?car, and 5 watts won't always be copyable.? It's been a while since I played with a rooftop magmount, but if I recall correctly, it performed nearly as well as the jpole.

?

While you're antenna shopping, consider getting a longer "rubber duck" style whip, about 19" long.? The diamond?SRH77CA is one popular model.? It's a little more cumbersome than the factory rubber duck, but offers a significant signal improvement while handheld.? It's my default antenna when using the?FT-60?handheld -- I only use the factory one when I really value portability over signal quality.

I expect to mostly use my radio around Phoenix where the repeaters might let me operate with just the rubber duck inside my car. I will try that before buying an external antenna. On rare occasions I drive to Tucson and see value in an external antenna for that trip.

Is the radio still in the charging cradle or hooked up to a wall wart when you tx? ?This will not supply enough current to do this. ?You need around 2.5-3 amps to be able to tx when plugged in. ?A car charger in the side port will do ok. ?If you are not plugged in when this happens, your battery is probably the problem.
