Re: Hi Newbie seeks help
W3FIS
I opted for the MFJ diplex instead, mostly due to considerations of mounting the antenna on my camera tripod and where some bolt holes were going to go. In either case (MFJ or Arrow diplexer), the insertion loss is at most, 1/2 dB. If you are REALLY worried, go full duplex with TWO HTs. A friend of mine has a pair of Wouxuns for just this. I also started with a VX-170 (2 meters) and VX-177 (70 cm), as I had them around. If you really want a CHEAP, but excellent receiver, then the Baofeng works well. 2+ watts for satellite work is a bit of a push, but I have done it. 5 watts on transmit gives much more reliable results.
I started with the two HTs and bought just the antenna. When I went on to using the FT-60R or my Wouxun, then I needed to get a diplexer (MFJ calls them, incorrectly, a duplexer). I have more problems with surrounding houses getting in the way more than anything else. /paul W3FIS |

Not enough to worry about. Many hams have successfully worked satellites with that exact setup. Now if you got the ports swapped on the splitter, it probably wouldn't work. From: Thomas Cassidy ??? As newbie to the group I need a little assistance.? I purchased an arrow dual band for satellite work.? At the same time I also purchased dual band splitter which fits into the handle.? Can you tell me if there an insertion loss with this product.? Any help will be gratefully appreciated. |

Thanks for the many suggestions...
Good news is the battery pack is still functional - so at worse I now have a back-up for my second FT-60. Now I have my FT-60 sitting in a container of rice...crossing my fingers for the best. But sadly I don't have much hope, even Yaesu indicated that it would be a lost cause.. Mike. |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI'm using FT-60 Commander and VX-2 Commander on my 64-bit Win 7 laptop.?? I also have RT Systems v2 for the VX-2 on the same laptop.?I have noticed that the grid is occasionally blank.? Cause, like I said, I have been told, that the battery pack will get cooked! Correct me if I am wrong on this please! Lyle k5lcm I confirmed the "cooked battery" results when using 12vdc external power through a phone call with a Yeasu Tech Rep a couple of months ago. Re: Commander columns won't appear.
I tried ccleaner this morning. It deleted something important. My firefox does not work properly anymore. I did my system restore, no luck, reloaded firefox, no luck. It is kind of strange. just certain things on certain pages, like my yahoo email does not show up.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe word for what folks are suggesting, is a desiccant.? If you know anyone who works for the phone company, (Splicer/repairman) they keep that stuff stocked in their trucks.? It is used to keep moisture out of cable splices, or to dry them out. ?(it is the same crap that comes in a small bag, in most consumer electronics that says ¡°Do Not Eat¡±) ? The dry rice is a GREAT desiccant.? If you put some in your salt shakers the salt in them will not chunk up, and clog. ? I think a combination of the rice plan, with some mild heat, over time might be the second best idea yet.? Sending it to Yeasu comes in first. ? From: FT-60@... yes, rice absorbing the moisture is the same

principle as the rice in the salt shaker to prevent clumping in high humidity silica gel packs placed into the microwave for a minute to make sure they are pink, not blue or green will also absorb moisture other drying agents/methods may also be used peace, haans ) On Sep 19, 2011, at 11:54 AM, dan.ervin wrote: your suggestion would probably be best, i was merely sharing my own personal experience - sounds silly, but it worked |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI haven't had a problem yet.? As long as the unit is not opened up the rice won't hurt anything.? Also, there may be some merit to using a bed of uncooked rice and laying the unit on top instead of covering it.73 de AC7EW Kelly On 9/19/2011 9:23 AM, Jo Yip wrote:

Rice is a drying agent... It soaks up liquid great! I would definitely cover it completely, and it does sometimes work but I wouldn't hold my breathe.

Is there a shop you know of that could repair the damage cheaper than buying a new (hopefully water proof) model? Mike KI6NLC |
