NONE of the Wouxun HTs are true full-duplex. None have "cross-band repeat" functions. None are true dual-receive. Not even the new UV6D that is coming out in the next few weeks have any of these capabilities.

Re: FT-60R worked great through Irene

As someone who has been through a few hurricanes and power failures, I
heartily recommend having a car charger for your HT. Even though I have
a 2m/70cm mobile in my SUV, you never know when you will need to get out
for a while. Having a car charger will let you keep your battery topped
off. It's not a bad idea to have a spare battery too for the radio.

During and after a hurricane repeaters can be down just like cell
towers. It's a good idea to get used to using your radio in simplex mode
and to know the other hams that are in range.

One of my friends who was in Florida had his tower destroyed in a
hurricane. He always kept a spare antenna, complete with coaxial feed
line that he could quickly attach to a tree. While his local repeaters
were down, he was still able to reach a few outlying repeaters that were
up on emergency power. An antenna forty feet in the air is going to do
you a lot more good than any HT antenna that you can buy.

Don't keep us in suspense.? Which ones are they?

I have on old IC-24AT that I keep around because I mod'ed it for x-band repeat.? I believe it is limited to using two simplex frequencies:? one on 2m, the other on 440.

Re: FT-60R $174.95 at HRO!

we used to use an old w32a iCom
up at a repeater site during public service events
we have tried it 2 ways
1 with a small dual band mag mounted NMO Larsen on a small metal box
2 with a dual band Diamond and a short run of some of the smaller LMR 400 type low loss coax
we also put a small 12v fan on a small a gel-cell to cool it through a vent in the metal box

the base antenna works better, and much farther away than the mag mount
but both work well close to, or directly below, surrounding the repeater site
we were pleasantly surprised at how well it worked on low, low, low power settings across the board (.5 watts?)

a balloon might achieve the same thing on a tether
small gel-cell, fan and a single ht is probably 3-5 lbs. max
you could lower and replace the gel-cell as needed (once or twice per day if necessary)
that would be a very good test to conduct (we had power so the batteries were more or less for backup)
on a balloon system no power cords to 1000 feet or more

FW key issue

After reprogramming my FT-60 I found that the FW Key now goes right to the pwr selection when in M-only mode. is this normal? I have looked through the manual and programming software, but did not find how I managed to do this, or undo it. Any Ideas??

That is when I bought mine too. It is a great radio. I added a Comet(tm)
antenna, programming software & cable, and bought a fast charger and an
extra battery too. What I really like is that I can use the programming
software to sychnonize all of the memory setting and stations on my
FT-7900 and FT-60R.
