I'm new to the world of HAM, but I do not know what programming is needed for the FT-60. I just saved my local repeaters in memory and gave them a name. Is there more that I am missing. I don't have any programming cable. ???

Thanks for the suggestions. I am still mystified, but I will try a new
battery.

I think there is a discussion here about that. "Mine" the messages. I
think you do void the warranty, and it involves also removing a piece of
film that water proofs the microphone.

I use the hand microphone/speaker most of the time.

Sounds dumb, but is your battery charged? I know that when it gets a little
low, it will receive fine, but transmit, and it re-boots.

Great point, Paul. Not only does the FT-60 require a little more current on
440 ... but you could be talking for several minutes on VHF at Medium or Low
Power, then not be able to talk at all on UHF High Power - IF your battery
needed charging.

A minor point to add is that the battery could be low as mentioned or
another thought is that the battery could be failing and not holding the
full charge needed to transmit. If you know af another person with the same
radio that you could swap batteries for a test, this could remove this
possibility. Just a thought!

I think this thread has wandered off the question originally asked:

"Has anyone experienced a transmit failure on UHF in the *memory mode*.
Radio works fine on UHF in *VFO mode*."

Unless, of course, the discussion regarding the battery was meant to include
the question "are you running in higher power on UHF in memory mode than you
are in VFO mode?"

Searched the archives for this info. The most recent post I found was over 4
yrs old & some of the chargers are NLA. My FT-60 uses a FNB-83 7.2 volt NiMH
battery. Anyone bought a smart charger recently & care to rate it?

TIA,

Charley, kf5jth

I use Sanyo Eneloop batteries in the alkaline case. I remove the cells
from the case and charge them in a MAHA C-9000 charger (actually a pair
of chargers), which is an excellent charger for AA/AAA NiMH cells.

Nice thing is that this philosophy can be applied to several of the HT's
I own. I no longer need to buy replacement battery packs, and I don't
need to use a different charger for each radio.

Wish I'd have done this before I bought all those chargers!

You can use Windows to identify the hardware ID, then Google the hardware ID to see if you can find drivers. Often the seller will have a website that will have drivers available.

From: Clayton Cullen

No I did not find any drivers or instructions to do so.

Did you install any USB drivers before plugging in the cable? With about 80-90% of the USB devices, you have to install the driver before you plug it in.

I had purchased the cable and software from HRO for my FT60, then lost the cable. I know it is around somewhere, but in the meantime, I ordered from eBAY a cheap copy. It is one that plugs into the radio on one end and on the other, it is USB (my old/lost one was a Serial with a USB adapter).? The driver sent with the cable did not mention the FT60 either but it ended up working after following the steps below.? I wrote the provider and was assured it would work (although I had already tried and it did not).?

?

While they sent me another cable/driver package, I did some on-line searching and found some helpful instructions that made the first cable/driver work perfectly. I had found that when I installed the eBay purchased?driver, it wanted to use Com Port 38 or some weird high number. Commander does not use that high of a com port.? So, in Windows (I have Win XP, so your instructions may be slightly different), I just went in and manually re-assigned the Com port from 38 which was for the USB Bridge port to Com 6, which was available in Windows and it showed up in Commander as a available port. Here are the directions I followed. After I made the change I did not have to reboot, but you might. I hope this helps.

?

Go into Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device manager.

?

Locate and expand the ports section.

?

On the Port Settings tab choose Advanced.

?

Right-click on the port you want to change (the USB Bridge port) and choose Properties.

?

In the lower left is a drop-down where you can change the com port number assignment to one that is available in your programming software. Make certain both match.

?

Choose OK back to the desktop. The device should now be at that location and the radio should communicate with the program/computer.

?

My eBay copy ($7.00 plus shipping) continues to work perfectly.

So in my effort to mange my financial affairs more prudently, (read cheap), I ordered the EBay software and cable to program my FT 60.
A) the FT60 is not even listed on the disc,
B) After downloading Commander, I find it doesn't even recognize the USB cable that I bought.
Should I now just order the programming package from HRO? Am I doing something wrong? Commander documentation says I need the adapter CT-2 from another vendor. HELP!!!

Re: Smart Charger for FT-60R?

The spacer plate is needed for the FT-60R. My old VX-170 and VX-177 do not need it. If you get that charger, remove the "sticky" stuff from the spacer plate, and replace it with a single layer of black electrical tape. That provides a good fit, and allows for easy removal.

Also, at the group's suggestion, I picked up a light timer at the local hardware store - $8.96. Does the charge limiting trick very nicely. My Wouxun HTs come with a "smart" charger for the Li Ion batteries, so with those, I can leave them on the charger all the time.

If I want to do an extended charge, there is a switch on the timer that bypasses the timing unit.

You can use Windows to identify the hardware ID, then Google the hardware ID to see if you can find drivers. Often the seller will have a website that will have drivers available.

No I did not find any drivers or instructions to do so.

Did you install any USB drivers before plugging in the cable? With about 80-90% of the USB devices, you have to install the driver before you plug it in.

Re: Programming Software and Cable

I just purchased the serial cable from ebay. When it gets here i will let you know how it works. I have read that the usb cable doesnt work with the freely available programs I wish to use so I opted to get the serial cable. If it works it may be a more affordable alternative.

The CD-26 may work with the FT-60R, I don't know either way.? But be aware that the VAC-370 uses the CD-29 cradle which comes with a spacer plate that must be used with some radios.

I believe the CD-26 charging cradle should suit the FT-60. It doesn't appear to list it as such, but it lists other handhelds (such as the vx-120) which also work with the VAC-370 fast charger, which is listed as an FT-60 accessory.

The wall wart that came with it is a PITA & in my old age I'm sometimes forgetting that I have the FT-60 on charge. Much more of that & the battery will be toast.

Re: Programming Software and Cable

I found that buying the Yaesu software from HRO was the best thing I could do. It talks to the radio with no problems.

Instead of trying to find a smart charger for my FT-60 I just plugged the charger that came with it into a light timer and set it to come on for 10 minutes every day.? The battery stays charged and I don't have to worry about it over charging.? When I've used it for an event I just charge it over night then put it back on the timer.

I'm with Nick on this one.? I do the same as him. Getting more miles per gallon on Eneloops and recharging?in the?MAHA's than with replacement battery packs. Your mileage may vary.

Are you only charging FT-60 NiMH packs?

Do you have any other chemistries of FT-60 packs? (Li-Ion, NiCD)

Do you also desire to charge AA NiMH cells?

Do you have any other radios with different configuration battery packs?

If I only had my original FT-60R and its NiMH pack and desired an intelligent, quick charger just for it, I'd go with the Yaesu VAC-370. Simple and elegant. Will also charge a battery pack off the radio.

But let us know if your needs are more involved than that!

I use a Yaesu VAC-370 to charge both the HT and my spare battery.? Not sure about trickle charge, but at least there's a green light that lets me know when it's charged.

Some people have reported using a lamp timer to limit the time the wall wart is energized.
