Re: User Manual Addendum #1
开云体育Neil, ? I’m sure that the designers of the FT-60 find their interface intuitively obvious and simple to use. Maybe 99% of the owners of this radio feel the same way. But, like you, I have trouble. The key is for us to find what is sometimes called “the mental model”. This is a way of thinking about the interface that matches what is in the heads of the designers. Adopting the correct mental model will help us reason out what to do in most cases. ? Deleting entries drove me crazy for a few days until I realized that there are two different things that can be deleted. You can delete the actual data [page 32] which consists of frequency plus, optionally, offset, tone, and power. But you can also delete pointers to this data [page 34] which is used in the memory banks. The designers chose to make these two procedures different. Don’t know why yet. ? You also mentioned what I call “error branches” which is when you are trying to do one thing and accidently end up doing another. I am trying to capture as many of these as possible in my Beginner’s Guide and explain how to escape the unintended state and repair any damage. ? 73, ? Rick KG7MQL ? ? From: FT-60@... Re: User Manual Addendum #1
Rick:
Your idea sounds good. MY problem is that, even after owning the cussed thing for over a year, I can never remember how to delete a frequency from a group. There's something I try to do (can't remember what it is, dammit) that caused me to add the frequency In current use to the group I am currently in. Then I scan the frequency two! three, sometimes four times each time through the band! until I can go through the PDF manual to find yet again how to delete a frequency from a memory bank. Yes, it's dead easy, but for me, it is not intuitive for some stupid reason. 73, Neil VA5SCA SKCC 12198 Sent via Morse Code, assisted by slide rule and abacus. |

Re: User Manual Addendum #1
开云体育Mike, The quick start card I'm thinking of would get a person able to talk to a single repeater. Super barebones and assumes nothing. It might be used in an emergency by someone that isn't a ham because the ham is too injured to use it. Ideally I would like to get it onto one side of a business card. The back would contain a few frequencies with their offsets and PL tone.? Rick On Jul 2, 2014, at 4:45 PM, "Michael Lynch lynchmf1@... [FT-60]" <FT-60@...> wrote:

It is called: Yaesu FT-60R Operating Notes.doc. It is a compilation of the most useful, and used most often, segments from the manual. And written, I hope, so that all can understand. - Mike At 12:21 PM 7/2/2014, you wrote:

Re: User Manual Addendum #1
开云体育Greg, ? Just to be clear, I am writing a Beginner’s Guide which works with the Yaesu Operating Manual. It is not an addendum. ? I like your idea of a quick start card. It seems to me that the bare essentials are what to do in order to communicate with a single repeater. It really isn’t much information so the card could be rather small. I agree that there should be space for a small number of frequencies. If the information was in a .doc or .xls format, the user could type in what they want and the result would look nice. ? Thanks! It will be a companion to the Beginner’s Guide. ? Rick ? From: FT-60@... [mailto:FT-60@...]

My idea was to make a small, folding quick guide that was straight common sense. Directed to the task you want to remember but don't use the feature enough to have it committed to memory. Stuff like scanning Banks, single or multiple. Stuff like a small list of frequencies that you may have as an emergency go to in case your radio loses its memory.
