Adopting the correct mental model will help us reason out what to do in most cases.

Deleting entries drove me crazy for a few days until I realized that there are two different things that can be deleted. You can delete the actual data [page 32] which consists of frequency plus, optionally, offset, tone, and power. But you can also delete pointers to this data [page 34] which is used in the memory banks. The designers chose to make these two procedures different. Don’t know why yet.

You also mentioned what I call “error branches” which is when you are trying to do one thing and accidently end up doing another. I am trying to capture as many of these as possible in my Beginner’s Guide and explain how to escape the unintended state and repair any damage.

Your idea sounds good. MY problem is that, even after owning the cussed thing for over a year, I can never remember how to delete a frequency from a group. There's something I try to do (can't remember what it is, dammit) that caused me to add the frequency In current use to the group I am currently in. Then I scan the frequency two! three, sometimes four times each time through the band! until I can go through the PDF manual to find yet again how to delete a frequency from a memory bank.

Mike,

The quick start card I'm thinking of would get a person able to talk to a single repeater. Super barebones and assumes nothing. It might be used in an emergency by someone that isn't a ham because the ham is too injured to use it. Ideally I would like to get it onto one side of a business card. The back would contain a few frequencies with their offsets and PL tone.?

Greg,

Just to be clear, I am writing a Beginner’s Guide which works with the Yaesu Operating Manual. It is not an addendum.

?

I like your idea of a quick start card. It seems to me that the bare essentials are what to do in order to communicate with a single repeater. It really isn’t much information so the card could be rather small. I agree that there should be space for a small number of frequencies. If the information was in a .doc or .xls format, the user could type in what they want and the result would look nice.

?

Thanks! It will be a companion to the Beginner’s Guide.

I have a compromise that should work. As I write my Beginner’s Guide to the FT-60, I will post it on my web site (rick.sparber.org). Those interested in correcting or adding to it can work with me off list.

It is slow going because I am trying to document as many beginner errors as I can recall. When version 1.0 is ready I will post the fact on this BBS once. No ongoing notices will be posted. I hope that others new to the FT-60 will contact me with problems they are having so both the problem and the solution may be included in the guide.

It should be soon. I’m at page 14 right now and want to get a few more functions done first. The goal of this guide is for a beginner to use it in conjunction with the Operating Manual plus a working FT-60. I am not trying to create a new Operating Manual.

The "Memory Bank Recall" function works for me exactly as written in the manual. If you press and hold V/M in the manual's step 4, what you try to avoid in your step 4, you'll enter "Memory Bank Scan" mode (I guess the "b" is for "bank scan"). See page 39 (in my manual, anyway) for more info.

I have a compromise that should work. As I write my Beginner’s Guide to the FT-60, I will post it on my web site (). Those interested in correcting or adding to it can work with me off list.

?

It is slow going because I am trying to document as many beginner errors as I can recall. When version 1.0 is ready I will post the fact on this BBS once. No ongoing notices will be posted. I hope that others new to the FT-60 will contact me with problems they are having so both the problem and the solution may be included in the guide.

?

It should be soon. I’m at page 14 right now and want to get a few more functions done first. The goal of this guide is for a beginner to use it in conjunction with the Operating Manual plus a working FT-60. I am not trying to create a new Operating Manual.

As with all of my articles, this one will be marked Copyleft so anyone that wants it can have it without charge. They just can’t modify the copy and distribute it. All changes must be to the master by me, the author/editor.

My manual also shows Memory Bank Scan on page 39 but the figures do not show the “b”. Not sure if you are saying that your copy of the manual shows the “b”. However, it is certainly doing a bank scan.

?

It wasn’t that page 33’s Memory Bank Recall was wrong, just did not fully explain to me what to expect and what will happen if I do anything wrong. As a newbie, I like to avoid surprises while I try to learn something new.
