FRG-7 Caps

Hello my name is Rick new to this group ,I got a FRG-7 from Danny in Quebec that looks and works like new ,I found a website that shows you how to find out when the set was made ,my ser. # is 6M081728 so from
?what I found out the set was made in November of 1976 ,I opened up the set to look at the chassis and found out that the big electrolytic caps were a very light blue colour and made by Rubycon and the smaller electrolytic
?caps were a grey colour and made by Elaina ,I had read that some say to change the caps because of their age and some say if they work and look fine just leave them alone ,anyway i just wanted to know if any of the members
?would know that because ?the bigger caps are of a different brand than the smaller caps could it be that some of the caps have been change in it,s life ,I really don,t want to change all the caps in this unit it looks too tight
in there for me ,I would have thought that Yaesu Musen used all the same brand caps in the set that they built ,any thoughts on this ,thanks for your time all the very best Rick

Hi Rick,
The most important thing that you can do with your FRG-7 is to make sure the fuse in the rear holder is 1/2 amp and no larger. If a problem develops with a main filter capacitor the fuse will blow. It doesn't hurt to inspect the electrolytic capacitors for leakage and replace if leakage is found. Take a look at the solder side of the circuit board holding the large capacitors. Does it look like the solder has been disturbed under the capacitors? Problems with electrolytic capacitors are proportional to the voltage they are subjected to. A 450 volt filter capacitor will not last as long as a 25 volt filter capacitor. All of the electrolytics in your FRG-7 are low voltage. I never replace all of the electrolytics in low voltage transistorized equipment. It's easy to damage the circuit board traces and pads.

If I was going to check all of the electrolytic capacitors in circuit I would use an ESR meter. See - for some more information.

Thanks Roger for the reply ,checked the solder side of the board and every thing looks clean and smooth ,if those caps were replaced they did a very neat job ,I just thought with the two different brands of electrolytic caps they must have replaced?
the bigger caps ,I did look close at the caps and they look as they should in good shape ,with them being low voltage as you said and everything working good I think I will leave well enough alone ,I don,t want to damage the circuit board at all.
?Do you think with the two different brands of caps that some have been changed or thats just the way they were done in production ,thanks again for your help all the very best Rick

Hi Rick, I think the brands were switched in production. Enjoy the FRG-7!? Roger
