Hi Arthur, Whenever I find a problem with any radio, particularly if it hasn't been used in a while, I shut off the radio and exercise the rotary switches. In the case of the FRG-7 I would start off by rotating the band and mode switch 20 times end to end. This will wipe of any oxidation from the rotary contacts. If it seems to improve the problems then do it again one more time. If it works then all is well. If it comes back again try some dexoxit on the band switch contacts. Use dexoxit by applying it sparingly to the rotary contacts.

If the above doesn't work then some alignment &/or troubleshooting may be required.

Deaf FRG-7, Please help

Hi,

I have an FRG-7 that has become completely deaf, on all bands. I seem to recall reading somewhere that there is a part of area of the radio that, of pressed on, can wake the set back up. Can someone tell me where that might be??

Thank you,?
Arthur

Usenet and rec.radio.amateur.equipment

A little history;? during the wild west of the internet, (1980) the?User Network or Usenet was?created.? It was the first public forum for information exchange?and was huge.? You can wiki it.
The reason I bring this up is that it covered the timespan for the FRG-7 introduction and most of the FRG-7 modification/development.? The groups were named in the following format:
rec.radio. (something)
rec.radio.amateur
rec.radio.amatuer.antenna
rec.radio.amatuer.equipment
rec.radio.amatuer.receivers

and so forth.? Google kept about 20 years of archives, and if you dig a bit, there is more info about Frogs than you can ever use.

Link to old FRG-7 mod page.

I'll try to start putting some FRG mods and reviews into the file pages soon.
Here is a link from the past that still works, too bad they didn't complete the ambitious start they made.

Old Yahoo Messages

Located in the Files section is a folder called 1 - Old Yahoo Messages Folder. Here are the notes with the text file in that folder -

All of the old Yahoo Messages from #1 to Nov, 2019 in a txt file of 1.1 mb. This file should open OK using Notepad. You can also use the free Notepad++ to open it faster. Notepad++ is available here - https://notepad-plus-plus.org/ . This file was edited to remove Yahoo text formatting data. Search using the Find function.

Also available is an html file of 1.7 mb that will open with any browser but so far has only been tested with Firefox. Takes a bit of time to load.

If you find any missing data please let me know as I have the original file.

LOCK and Preselector problems ...

Hi everyone,

after a while I turned on my FRG7 and found two surprises ...

the first :
the led lock switches off regularly only from 14 MHz to go up, under 14 MHz up to 10 MHz it goes off but not in a defined way, from 7/8 MHz to go down it doesn't go out anymore, even if it is possible to hear the HAM
in 40 meters without problems. I have seen in the manual that VR102 can be adjusted for correct alignment, I have to try. Any suggestions from you about this problem?

the second :
the preselector has no effect, turning the knob no longer has any "DIP" points in any range.
Any suggestions from you about this problem?

thanks and best 73 Luca IK2NUQ

Re: MHZ selector off by one MHZ

Thanks for your help Roger, i will give it a try this weekend

Re: MHZ selector off by one MHZ

I found a top chassis photo and put it in the Photos section. I can see the MHz tuning capacitor has a shaft coupling with set screws. With the capacitor fully closed the dial indicator should be over the small triangle symbol to the right of 0.

Re: MHZ selector off by one MHZ

It's looking like it is a mechanical problem and not an electronic problem. If the MHz dial only goes to the left edge of 0 that would explain why the dial shows 1 MHz higher than the actual frequency. I don't have my FRG-7 handy to check but it's possible the MHz drum has slipped on the shaft or the angle drum drive needs alignment. Check all drive components and set screws.

Re: MHZ selector off by one MHZ

the light goes out on all segments from 0-30 the MHZ dial goes about 1/2 past 30 but does not go below 0 at all it only goes the the left edge of 0?
