I also have being thinking of doing the same as i have a spare emi socket sitting here unused at the moment

Antenna recommendation for nursing home setting

 

I've been prepping my FRG-7 to lend to a gentleman who lives in a 12 x 13 ft room in a nursing facility..

I'm looking for suggestions of what sort of antenna to set up for him. Do I need to connect to all 3 ports or just one?

I modified the radio today and installed an IEC socket with integral EMI filter mostly to improve the ground situation and simplify cord handling.

The display input connects to the Yaesu tp02 on the AF/IF board, the positive supply to the terminal strip that supplies the lighting, the negative lead grounded. The display will come on/off with the panel lights. Dead simple. just 3 wires.

Yes, I will share it, no problem.? 5 Other people have asked me for this counter. I'm drawing a pcb for it.?
It is a prototype at the moment with a buffer amplifier for the HF-input and an opamp for the S-meter. The rest is done by an Arduino Nano or Pro mini with an 1.14" tft screen.
Maybe I'm gonna make a kit for it, or send people pre-programmed and calibrated Arduinos. And also a good description how to build it into the FRG.?

Latest update:
Q105 just doesn't seem to want to mix.? It tests well, but it is producing 42MHz instead of the 2-3MHz. ?? The 2 IFs coming in to it are fine.
So I am going to order MPF103's (can't find any 2sk19gr's).?
Meanwhile I'll check all surrounding components to make sure they don't have an issue.

The saga continues....

One easy and cheap way to add a digital frequency display is right here.

Just program the module for an IF shift of -3,455, and it will read the actual Kilohertz receive frequency.

Thank you for your information. That's what I thought already. I have owned a FRG for 30 years ago, and I could not remember if there is a zero beat on carrier in USB position, like the modern receivers.

When receiving SSB the BFO is shifted 1.5kHz above or below the carrier frequency for USB or LSB, Most modern receivers allow for this in the frequency display. This is normal. The FRG7 uses a simple LC oscillator, the front panel switch adds a small capacitor across the BFO coil when using USB. The reason for the BFO shift is to keep the SSB signal centred in the IF? filters passband.

Hi Roger, unfortunately I can't receive WWV here in Europe. But I can receive a Russian time signal on 9.996 MHz.?
My Frog has a Kokusai filter. So I had to reallign the BFO. In USB position, zero beat is not the same as the carrier frequency. I have checked it also on broadcast stations. It is always 1,5 kHz above the frequency.?
Does your Frog has zero beat on the carrier??
When the signal is exactly in the middle of the filter,? the frequency on the display is spot on. So the counter calibration seems to be okay.?

Hi Roger,
No I didn't check that. The counter has a calibration routine. I have calibrated it against a high precision Rohde&Schwarz signal generator. So the indication on the display is exact the VFO frequency.
I will listen to the WWV transmitters and see if they match.?

The display looks good. Have you tried checking it's accuracy with WWV on 5, 10 & 15 MHz?

Hello, I saw the discussion about the digital readout. I've just finished one for my FRG. It is based on a OLED display and an Arduino micro pro.
I only took the S-meter away, which is still connected and remains in the radio.?
I'm also busy making a version with a TFT color display.

I bought the FET from a Canadian EBAY seller & when I told him, he immediately refunded all money including shipping.? It was during Easter & he was on vacation but still responded.? He has a 100% rating there.

I know there is too much bogus stuff out there, but this isn't one.
I buy a few things on EBAY & have only gotten burned once.? Maybe I am lucky.

Accusing Mr Elliot of lying? Certainly not, and what a stupid allegation.
I do however question the parroting of unsolicited allegations of fake components from unknown sources. For instance, unwanted parasitic oscillations are common in high gain audio designs, and can destroy ANY? output transistor even at quiescent .
Many of these reported failures are from non technical people who either lack the knowlege or equipment to track this phenomena, let alone cure it, they are merely following a diagram, or a plan, with the expectation it will work.
One contributor sites a? 2N3055 transistor failing at 4 amps, so it must be a fake. The genuine transistor is rated at 15 amps Ic, max CE voltage 60 by memory. Without any more technical context by the contributor, we cannot diagnose anything. What was the supply? voltage? What was the base current? Was the transistor in saturation? What were the thermal conditions.????Not enough evidence here to allege fakery.
?Was? this gentlemans expectations rather? too high, his understanding too low? perhaps?
To accept this as evidence of a fraud is ridiculous.
?I am sure fake components do exist, but not on the scale you would like to believe.... my initial point.
Even your friend Mr Elliot agrees with me that distributors making a living knowingly selling fake transistors are unlikely to remain in business long, so in that regard, its a self levelling process.?

So, please do not offend me with your assumptions.
