Yaesu FT-710
Howdy Amigos;
? I bought an FT-710 about a year ago when I got my General license.? It has worked great so far, and I am using it in my work to promote Amateur Radio in the SF Bay Area.? Recently it has started causing me problems, and I cant figure it out. What happens is that I can hook it up just fine,? and run WSJT to access FT8.? It sees all the other stations, but when I go to transmit, the radio shuts itself off.? *click".? ?I have tried both using HRD for Cat Control, and having WSJT handle CAT itself, same problem.? Sometimes I can transmit enough to make a contact, others I have to keep turning the radio back on and trying to complete an exchange. I backed out of FT8, and tried transmitting with the mike.? As soon as I speak, KAPOW.? Its a deader.?? I tried backing the power back to 50w, and it seems happier, but 75 croaked it again. ?
Any ideas what the problem is?? I was demoing the radio in front of a large group of new hams when it decided to start this, and it looked pretty bad. |
开云体育Sounds like a power supply problem. A transmitter will shut down, if you overload its power source. Gary

开云体育What power supply are you using with the radio?? It might be going bad and not providing enough current or voltage.? Could also be the fuses in the power cord.? I have had fuses that check out ok with a continuity meter but still didn't allow enough current to get through.? If you have another power supply or cord you can use to try and see if it is one of those, or hook up another radio to your power supply and cord and see if it does the same thing. What antenna are you using and how close is it to the radio? RF getting into the radio can also shut it down. 73 John AF5CC Sent using Zoho Mail ---- On Tue, 21 Jan 2025 18:25:05 -0600 Stiv Ostenberg <stiv@...> wrote ---

Digital modes are more likely to shut down your setup due to RF getting into the computer, radio, or even the power supply, because it's transmitting at full power (whatever you have the radio set for). You might get away with SSB when you can't with FT-8.

Another thing to look at is your antenna. If too much RF is being reflected back to the transmitter it might shut down to reduce the?chance of damaging the radio. I would use a good quality antenna analyzer to eliminate the antenna as the culprit.
