FT-80r Questions

I have acquired an FT-80r.
The battery (FNB-41xh Ni_MH)is dead (measured with a multi-meter).

The charger that came with it is an NC-60B (for Ni-CD). The charger tested as putting out the specified voltage/amperage.

I have DLed the manual. the NC-60B is mentioned, as are Ni-CD batteries. Ni-MH aren't mentioned anywhere.

Anyone know if I should be able to power up the radio with the charger plugged in, but no battery.

Is it OK to charge Ni-MH batteries with the NC-60B Ni-CD charger?

Any ideas on how I might power up the radio without a battery?

Any and all help appreciated.

I would expect that on older radios.?

Does the operating manual say it's able to run while being plugged into the charger? I would go with what the manual says. In lieu of that, I would say for RX only, the charger might be OK as a source of power. The unit may have a 12 VDC input (or another voltage) that is made for this and might work in transmit as long as your PS can deliver the current needed.

I've heard of some people doing that, but if I understand it well enough, a NiCd charger doesn't completely cut off when the cells reach their terminal voltage, but continues with a tricke charge, and with NiMH, you don't want a tricke charge. If this is the case, you might get by temporarily by watching the charger or timing it and taking the NiMH battery out when it's fully charged.?

I would verify it works first, then buy NiMH aftermarket batteries and a charger for them. Here's one place you can buy those things:

Let's see the rig.

Donald,

I haven't been able to find if the radio to find if the radio can be run on the charger without the battery in the manual. Of course, I could be missing it.

I have been to that link. I'm not sure if I want to order a battery and matching charger if the radio itself is dead.

Thanks for the reply and info.

Have someone help you with this, but set a power supply to the same voltage as
the battery pack, and hook up some wires (color coded is helpful). Make sure of
the polarity, and have the other person hold the wires on the correct terminals
on the back of the radio and see if it works. As long as the voltage is low,
it's not going to hurt anyone holding the wires.

You might also consider opening a battery pack and using it to get to the
connection that goes to the radio, and disconnect the battery when you do this.
It would allow you to do this without a helper.

Your radio may have a DC IN jack to do this the right way. I doubt that the
charger has enough current output to support transmit, but most chargers will
work for RX only with their matching radio.

If the radio is that old, you may also need to replace a memory retention
battery. But first things first, of course.

Update...
The FNB-41xh 9.6 volt 1200mAh battery charged to 12.33 volts overnight. The radio will not power on, so something else is wrong.
Thanks for all the info, guys.
