Software Compatibility - Apple M1 Processor and DR5000
#Railcom
#DR5000
#DR5088RC
#JMRI
Contemplating using the DR5000 and related peripherals such as the DR5088RC. ?This would be controlled using JMRI. ?But, I have a Mac with the M1 processor, and it appears that Digikeijs software only runs under Windows. ?Windows won't run in a VM on the M1 (at least that's the case with Parallels). ?Presumably I don't need to run the Digikeijs software for operations if using JMRI, but I suspect I also wouldn't be able to install firmware updates on the CS or its peripherals. ?My assumption is that USB is USB, so there would be no conflict between JMRI on the Mac and the DR5000. ?Thoughts?

Your first problem is that Digikeijs doesn’t exist anymore and one of their products are now manufactured therefore you will be buying either old stock or second-hand stock, and in both cases without any support. You can buy products that are supported and that are much better than the Digikeijs products from YaMoRC, though presently their command station is not available, nor a Railcom decoder - however you can manage the YAMORC devices using either USB ?or a web browser, making the largely independent of the OS once all the products are available. 开云体育Not sure the Windows on an M1 with Parallels is correct. I have an M1 MacBook Pro with Parallels and I can run Windows 10 with train controller. You have to have the right version of windows.?I haven’t tried the DR5000 or YD7001 apps but I can’t see any reason why they wouldn’t work. I had run the DR5000 app under an earlier Intel Mac on Parallels.? Brian On 13 Jan 2024, at 06:43, ericwachter19@... wrote:
?Thanks, I agree that YoMaRC looks promising, but I don't know if I'm willing to wait until they actually have products for purchase. ?And products from a dead company probably aren't my best option, either....

Eric, I have two thoughts on this. Having used Parallels in the past and given up on moving it over to my M1 Macbook Air (for other uses, not related to model railroading), I think Parallels will take an entire USB device, not just one virtual COM port (which is really a Windows concept), so if you want to run software on Windows and Mac connected to the DCC system, you'd need two different USB interfaces, i.e. one to the DR5000 and one to a LocoBuffer-USB for example. It seems like it should work if you understand the limitations, but it also seems like an added layer of complexity when troubleshooting. My second thought is that as a cross-platform user who uses Windows 10 on 7+ machines on a semi-regular basis, and Mac OS on a Macbook Air, an Android phone and an iPad, Windows PCs are really cheap, I'd just get a Windows laptop or desktop for the model railroad and not try and fool around with VMs. I use a refurb Windows 10 desktop that was about $220 as my layout PC, and I use LokProgrammer, JMRI, TCS D.E.P.O.T. etc, on there. I'm considering getting a refurb Windows laptop for about the same price for shows. With Dropbox, I can sync my JMRI files such that a minute or two on Wi-Fi before the show or on mobile hotspot will sync everything up.
