DR4018 & DC Question
Hi all, ? ? ? ? ?I have a DR4018 installed on my layout with the signal inputs connected to my main buss line and temporarily the power inputs are daisy chained from the signal inputs. I have a DPDT Center Off toggle switch installed on my layout with 1 set of connections to my DR5000 and the other set of connections to an MRC Controlmaster 20 DC power pack. The center connections are connected to my main buss line. With this setup I can switch the whole layout between DCC and DC, one system at a time. I do this because I can test run and break in DC locomotives before adding a DCC decoder to them.?My question is since the DR4018 inputs are connected to my buss line, will switching the layout to DC power damage the DR4018 in any way ? Will I need to disconnect the DR4018 before applying DC power to my buss line ? Thanks in advance for your help with this matter. Don Jenkins don97jovi@... |
Thanks Ryan, I appreciate the answer.? Any word on the RRampmeter and the buzzing Kato turnouts ? Don Jenkins don97jovi@... On Tue, May 19, 2020, 9:52 PM Iron Planet Hobbies <ironplanethobbies@...> wrote: Don, |
Ryan, ? ? ? ? ?Yes the RRampmeter is wired in between the DR5000 and my track buss wires. Don Jenkins don97jovi@... On Tue, May 19, 2020, 10:01 PM Iron Planet Hobbies <ironplanethobbies@...> wrote: Don,? |
Ryan, ? ? ? ? ?Sure thing. I definitely would like to get it figured out so I can begin using the external power supply for the DR4018. Thank you for all your help with this issue. Don Jenkins don97jovi@... On Tue, May 19, 2020, 10:05 PM Iron Planet Hobbies <ironplanethobbies@...> wrote: Don, |
Don,
I connected the DR5000 straight to a RRampmeter and then to the DR4018.? Power & Signal both off the RRampmeter. Using a DR4101 in between the DR4018 and the Kato. I was able to throw the turnout just fine without any buzzing sounds. You may have to disconnect the other items and then add them back in one at a time until you find it. Ryan |
Ryan, ? ? ? ? ?That is how I have mine hooked up now and everything works fine with no buzzing turnouts. The problem starts when I disconnect the power input wires that are jumpered from the signal input on the DR4018. It doesn't matter whether the external power supply is connected or if nothing is connected to the power input, as soon as track power is turned on they buzz. It is strange that the only thing that stops the buzzing is to jumper from the signal input to the power input. I guess I will try bypassing that buss hub and see what that does. It is the only component between the RRampmeter and the DR4018. Thanks for the help you have given me with this issue. On another note, any idea when you may get some n-scale Peco code 80 insulfrog turnouts back in?stock ? Don Jenkins don97jovi@... The Controlmaster 20 track terminals are hooked to one set of connections on the DPDT Center off toggle switch. The DR5000 track terminals are hooked to another set of connections on the DPDT toggle switch. The center connections on the DPDT toggle switch are hooked to the main buss wires. I can then toggle between DC & DCC, using one system at a time only. Don Jenkins don97jovi@... On Sun, May 24, 2020, 11:05 AM Dennis Cherry <dbcherry@...> wrote: Question: |
The turnouts buzz even if there is no external power supply hooked to the DR4018. As soon as the DR5000 power is turned on the buzzing starts. The only way the buzzing stops is if I jumper from the signal input to the power input on the DR4018. Don Jenkins don97jovi@... I run DCC, so I wouldn't think polarity would be an issue. I do keep a consistent track wiring scheme though. All outside rails are connected to one track power output on the DR5000 and all inside rails to the other track power output. As part of troubleshooting this issue I did swap the signal input wires on the DR4018 with no change in the turnout buzzing. Don Jenkins don97jovi@... Kato turnouts are power routing units. you may want to switch around the track power wires and see what happens. |
I don't use a DC power pack to power the DR4018. I have a 12v 3a? AC to DC wall wart power supply. The buzzing starts when the DR5000 track power is turned on even without the wall wart plugged in to an electrical outlet. I installed a 2nd brand new DR4018 on a different section of my layout yesterday with 3 brand new Kato #6 turnouts. Wired the same as the 1st DR4018 and all 3 turnouts buzz also when track power is applied. I have a Digitrax DS64 hooked to 4 Kato #6 turnouts powered with? a Digitrax PS14 wall wart and they do not buzz. Don Jenkins don97jovi@... ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDon, ? If you get a chance can you post some pictures of your wiring.? Maybe something that shows the overall shot. ? I have tried to get one of my Katos to buzz and can¡¯t and haven¡¯t heard of anyone else having this issue either. ? Thanks, ? Ryan ? ? ? From: Don Jenkins

Here are a few pictures when this new section was under construction. I pre-wired as much as I could before flipping it over onto its legs. The terminal strip in photo 1 connects the main buss lines to the existing part of the layout. These pics were taken before I ended up having to jumper the signal input to the power input on the DR4018. You can see the jack for the external power supply in photo 3. Hope these help. Here is a quick schematic of the main wiring of my layout. All buss wiring is color coded blue & white starting from the DR5000. All feeders follow the color coding. No issues with operating trains and all turnouts work properly except for the buzzing of turnouts connected to the 2 DR4018's. Don Jenkins don97jovi@...
