WANTED, fully working G90 display/head unit
3
I have given up on repairing mine, it seems like nothing I can do will solve this problem so I am looking for a fully functional display unit for the G90. It must be able to communicate with computers using the com port on the side, update the firmware and have a perfect display.

ALC and Power
Hello everyone, I've been using my G90 for a while now and have an issue I can't figure out. I looked through the group and saw similar things but not exactly the same problem I'm having. I'm using the G90 with the CE-19 for FT8. When I transmit, the power starts out where I want it (16-17 watts normally) and the ALC value will be in the 70's. The ALC immediately starts shooting up until it gets to 100, at which point the power output starts dropping like a rock until it gets down to 5 or 6 watts output. I've tried all kinds of adjustments and can't find anything that keeps things stable. I am using a cooling fan. I don't feel like temperature is involved anyway since the problem starts immediately on the first transmission. Has anyone seen something like this or know how to stabilize the power vs ALC? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Ken -- Ken Pryor KA9PHI

Useful CAT CI-V commands for working digital on firmware with USB-D and LSB-D
8
In conjunction with my previous post about not getting RX audio out of the g90 using the DE-19 interface, I found myself with a problem to solve for remote control of my g90. How do I switch the radio to U-D and L-D from flrig? When you would set the mode to USB or LSB the radio would enter into the normal USB/LSB. Through some research I found the answer, custom commands in your rig control software. I'll detail for using flrig below for those puzzeled by the same issue of having to manually hit the mode button on the radio. This will work with or without the DE-19, I just happen to use the xeigu interface. In Flrig enter into config, and select commands. I programmed button 1 and button 2 to send a custom CI-V command that is not natively an option from the drop down. In the box next to the label, enter the following for buttons 1 and 2, leave "SHIFT" blank xFE xFE x70 xE0 x26 x00 x01 x01 x01 xFD xFE xFE x70 xE0 x26 x00 x00 x01 x01 xFD The first one I labled as U-D and the second button I labeled as L-D. Close out of settings then go to tab 1 on the extended controls window. Now you can click those two buttons to switch to the digital modes which will enable the line in and line out over the 8pin connector. This works and has been tested on firmware version 1.79B - current. Again just posting for anyone trying to figure out life's problems that the g90 can present. KC3WRY 73…

G90 Head is DEAD
4
I kept having a problem with random intermittent things going on with my G90. I tried the usual things like reprogramming and even that didn't work. So it's then that I decided to open the head to see if anything were obvious. I wasn't ready to see what I found. First the microphone plug fell out, yes fell out. When looking further I found ALL the circuit board traces were gone and still attached to the pins of the plug. Looking further I found similar on the volume pot and on the main tuning pot. I have seen poor solder points many times and cold solder joints but having the circuit traces completely gone was out of this world. My first thought was to contact Radioddity who I purchased the radio from. They replied saying of course the radio was out of warranty and couldn't be of help. But, they also gave me the name of a company I could sent the G90 to for repairs. I contacted said company and found that for $183.00 USD they would take the radio and send it to Xiegu in China for repairs. They went on to say that it could be months before it was sent because they needed enough radios to send in mass to make it worth while to send. Then they continued by saying it could be more months before receiving the radios back and sending them on to the customers. Yes, I was completely dumbfounded by this and decided to think about it and also seek other ways of repair. After about a month of looking (life also got in the way) I went back to the website only to find that they were no longer going to do Xiegu repair and wish us good luck. They also gave the address of a person here in the states we could try for repairs. At this time I have not contacted that person but I was fortunate to purchase another G90 from a friend who had reverse wired the main unit and killed it. Now I have a good head unit and a bad head and main unit for repair. To continue this saga I purchased a repair kit from Radioddity some months ago on the premise that it could come in handy some day. I was correct because in the kit were the parts necessary to repair the main radio. Now I'm left with my original problem of a bad control head with missing traces. Oh, the reason for taking your time to read all of this. If you keep having unexplained problems or intermittent problems you might want to open the control head and look for the same problem as mine. Thanks to ALL and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, 73, -- Lea - W5HLG

G90 display unit not being detected by computer
9
I reflashed firmware 1.79b03 to the main unit and now after doing this it power up but the display unit is not being detected by the computer at all. I am trying to update the firmware but am not seeing the usual prompts even after trying holding down the space bar as I power the radio on and holding down the volume control after I power the radio on using both Tera Term and PuTTY. In addition to this flrig is failing to detect the radio despite the correct COM port being selected. I can't find anything anywhere about this problem and need this to work because I use this radio for digital modes and the software requires the radio to be controlled through it.

Thoughts G90?
3
Hi Everyone, i have been an amateur radio operator for 40 years but have not been active forbtge last 12 years. I’m retired now and rebuilding my station. I’m an EE by profession and an extra class operator. I don’t claim to be an expert though! Over the last 10 to 20 years much has changed in ham radio! When I started back I didn’t even know what FT8 was. My last radio was a Yaesu FT-990. I’m retired now and ham radio will be a big part of my retirement. I’m building back my cw skills and that is a main focus. When I had my previous station I had 2 big towers with a triband and a monoband yagis. It was a damned hassle and one of the big reasons I stepped away. I sold everything. I tend to over analyze things. Yup, that’s what I’m doing now! A few weeks ago I was going to go ahead and purchase an FTDX 101. Then it was an FTDX10. I’ve always been of the buy once - cry once mindset. I was also going to install a multiband vertical like a DX Commander Sig 9 or a Butternut HF9V. The cost of my station in those configurations would have been $5k to $7k. I could do that but I put that in pause. I then headed down the path of a much simplier low power station that costs much less by building a QMX+ or CFT1 and use them QRP in a base station configuration (I spent years with big amps and big towers and big Yagis and etc. The most fun I ever had was CW at QRP power levels. It was simple and it was fun!). Those radios built are $120 to $450. I would equip that setup with a multiband EFHW like a MyAntennas 80-10m antenna. I liked this setup but i was concerned about being tied into 5W or 10W. In general that’s enough. I told a friend that I wished there was a commercial radio in the 20W to 40W range that wasn’t $1k. He told me anout the G90. So, here is what I plan to order tomorrow and I would be interested in the comments of experienced G90 owners: - New G90 from Radioddity. Price today is $399. - I’d order the new base which has the fan included and it looks like it now includes an Anderson input to the base and the cable connect to the radio. $69. - MyAntennas 80-10m EFHW 130’ long. Approx $225. - Since the radio would be used as a base station I would purchase a small 10A or 15A power supply. approx $150. Here are a few of my thoughts: - Total system cost < $1,000 - I wouldn’t update any firmware. I’d just run that thing as it comes. Not broke - Don’t fix it! - I have never owned “economy equipment” but why would I purchase a $5K system when my thoughts are that this system would do just as well as a cw rig? I know the G90 can’t compete with an FTDX10 or an FTDX101 from a filtering standpoint with 300hz roofing filters etc but I believe it will be “good enough”. Do you agree? - Lastly I have only 2 concerns although they are small ones. With a high Yaesu or Icom one would have solud factory support for “issues”. Not so much with a G90. So, if a G90 “crapped out” I believe it is scrap. True? Secondly, with a Yaesu or Icom accessory options are large. For instance on a Yaesu there are multiple mics available - desktop options and headset options from heil Etc with well known adaptors. Not so much on a G90? Right? Can I use a Heil Pro 7 headset with mic with a G90 (Heil doesn’t specifically call out a G90 adaptor cable for a G90 but I see references to using a AD-1-ICM cable. I believe both of these concerns are minor. I’d adapt and if my radio died after warranty the cost is low enough to trash it and just buy another one! - Is the G90 a good CW rig? I’m interested in thoughts of experienced users. Reviews of the G90 are very good overall.

VFO encoder replacement
4
Hi, My VFO encoder shows signs of beeing weared out slowly. Sometimes it is not tuning properly when I turn the VFO knob. This encoder would fit I believe: PEC11R-4015F-S0024 . If someone can confirm that this encoder would work fine it would be great! 73, Janos ON4JBS

G90s VOX on ACC Port
I have managed to get FT8 to work pretty well on Linux with Vox on some of the simpler radios including the usdx red corners, etc. Unfortunately, it seems the G90 really does not want to trigger vox. I have enabled Vox, set U-D on 15m, selected line in from the menu, set the input and output volumes to maximum, disabled the AGC. And still nothing on the Vox.

Help, the radio only turns on when the cable is connected to the computer.
9
I initially thought I fried the radio and maybe I have somehow. I replaced the fuse in the power cable and now I have some weird interactions. If plugged into power the 3 lights on the display unit (but not the display) flash rapidly and the unit will not power on. Once I plug the cable into the bottom connection below the headphone jack the lights stop flashing (if the USB is plugged into the computer) and the unit powers on seemingly like normal. If the cable is removed while 'normal' the whole thing shuts off and starts flashing again. I tried flashing the display firmware, but Tera Term appears to not receive any data from the radio. I had been successful at updating the firmware a few times so I believe I am following the correct procedure. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas on what I can do to fix it?

Amplifier, RM Italy BLA 350, question
2
I'm looking for suggestions for connecting my G-90 to my amplifier, an RM Italy BLA 350 solid state amp. Specifically, the PTT cabling options. I see a number of cables online. See the last sentence in this post. Also do I, (how do I) connect the ALC jack to the G-90. I'm completely new to amps, so please explain as though I know nothing, (which is the case, LOL). Bill

My weight reduction on the g90
3
Hello group, I just wrote up a little blog post on how I dropped 20% (300g) of the weight of my G90. http://www.tobiasfeltus.com/blog/xiegu-g90-weight-loss-preparing-20w-for-sota-activations/ There is also a separate post on removing the case on an Amazon LiFePO4 battery pack to reduce weight. None of it requires fancy tools, and can be done in a weekend. I trust that someone will find it helpful. 73

New member introduction
5
Hello All, Today I did something I never thought I'd do, I ordered a new Xiegu G90. Not because I really needed another radio in the shack, but for a "grab and go" kit. This will be my first QRP rig in at least 25 years. I built a few back in the day, but before Wifey passed 4 years ago she bought me two wonderful radios, the FTDX3000 for our anniversary in 2019, and the following year the FTDX101MP. She knew her time was very short and wanted to give me something to remember her by and never part with (in 70 years of radio'in I've probably had a couple hundred or more radios). Like I could ever forget her, I'd give up all my radios to have her here again. Anyway, enough on that note. Last year I was flooded out of my mobile-home and stayed at my niece's place for 10 days. Only radios I grabbed was the dual band in the truck, and an HT dual band (yes, Yaesu, FT-60R) that let me talk to the locals on the repeater. BUT, I sure missed the nightly QSO's on 3952 (WPSS Net) and the 40M nets (noontime net on 7284 and weekend swap net on 7240). From what I read about the tuner in the Xiegu G90 it will make a great go-box rig and I could have put a wire on her tall wooden fence. Tomorrow Amazon should deliver the Xiegu G90. Now I have some questions, I've been "doing Radio" since about 1953 so questions are rare from me :) 1 . I have a number of power supplies, including "extras" from 35-50 Amps, really high quality units, but overkill for a QRP rig. I would like to order an "RF QUIET" supply large enough for the Xiegu G90 and perhaps a dual band mobile on low power. I fell that 15 Amps or so would be sufficient since I'd only Xmit on one at a time. Anyone have a suggestion for such a compact PS? MUST BE RF QUIET! 2. Compact portable antenna suggestions, easy setup and "Guest friendly". I've considered "double Hamsticks" set up as a dipole, small loops (pricey) and so forth. 3. With pretty severe arthritis in my hands I haven't "done CW" in a long time, but if I decided to what are the selectivity specs (how narrow) will the rig go in CW mode. On a similar note, I like to chase NDBs (Longwave Beacons), does the receiver go down to the longwave range of 200-500KHz? Not a big deal, I have portable receivers that do. . . AND FINALLY, I welcome all tips and hints in the use of this rig. I usually buy a "Nifty Manual" from HRO on any new rig I buy, but there doesn't seem to be one on the Xiegu G90. -- <>< 73 From "The Beaconeer's Lair" ><> Specializing in DXing NDBs (Longwave Beacons) Phil, KO6BB, http://www.qsl.net/ko6bb/ (\__/) (=’.'=) (”)_(”) EQUIPMENT: YAESU: FTDX-101MP Xceiver, Dual SDR Receivers (~2020) YAESU: FTDX-3000 Xceiver, DSP IF, 300Hz Roofing filter (~2019). G90 with RTTY
4
Hey All, I would like to interface my g90 with N1MM/MMTTY for RTTY Operations. I have not yet attempted the task but would like to ask if any of you have completed the Interfacing of the g90 with N1MM/MMTTY yet? I have it interfaced with a Digirig Mobile for the FT modes and such so I am good there. Just wondering if it plays well with the N1MM/MMTTY software.. Thanks in Advance - 73, Danny NF4J

FlDigi as CW encoder/decoder...so close
I'm trying to use FLDigi as an encoder/decoder with the G90. I think I'm close. The problem is I can't get the FLDigi waterfall to show activity. Adjusting the two selections at the bottom of the waterfall, (but undescribed in the manual), only changes the background from black to blue. The trace for the incoming signals, usually yellow and red, is non existent. The Signal diamond is black 99% of the time. Every once in a while it will tick yellow or green. The decode function of FLDigi seems to work, but generally is gibberish. With no activity shown on the G90's internal waterfall on any given frequency, the decoder is still producing text. It seems like the decoder is trying to do it's job. If I tune into ARRL's W1AW practice code frequency it is decoded, (just okay), but still no activity on the waterfall. Rig: G90 Sound card: DigiRig Rig control (CAT): FLRig. Works perfectly BTW Squelch: Off Computer: Evolve Win10 mini laptop Antenna: Diamond CP5H, 5 band vertical Keyer: WinKeyer USB Software: latest versions of FLRig, FLDigi, and G90 firmware Environment: Urban, high noise floor G90 gain: anywhere from 43% to 100% has no effect Other digital modes: FT8 and FT4 work flawlessly. I feel like the incoming sound level isn't right. I've mucked-around with the computer sound settings, but that didn't resolve the issue. Note; in the shack, when I substitute an Icom IC7300 for the G90, everything works. When I use FLDigi, the IC7300, and desktop PC, it functions perfectly pretty well.

Not quite a new cheat sheet, but...
Small G-90 instruction manual. I downloaded the G90 operating manual and printed it out in 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" booklet format. I added some additional info that was important to me. I took it to FedEx Office and had it spiral bound with clear plastic covers. Well under $10 in July 2024. I've added to it, with some more customized material, and just had FEO un-bind it, then add the new pages and re-bind it. I also printed certain pages, (pages 20 and 21 in the Xiegu_G90_User_Manual_V4.33_20240710.pdf at Radioditty). The small, complete manual is a great addition to my G-90 kit. I know I'm not supposed to mention the "Y" word around her, but I did the same thing for my FT-891. In that booklet I also added the manual for an LDG antenna tuner, various FT8 setup documents, and a bunch of antenna data for my 17' telescoping whip antenna.

Optional mics.

I would like a smaller portable mic if anyone knows of one. The Icom 5100 clone the g90 comes with works great but is bigger than necessary for packing light and small. -n7hex

I'm looking for some guidance for N3FJP and/or N1MM with the G90...

I'm trying to get the G90 to play nice with N3FJP and/or N1MM. In a perfect world, logging and CAT control. Flrig is installed, and I use DigiRig as my soundcard. My setup for FT8 works flawlessly, including CAT control. Thanks in advance. Bill KD9TWA
