X5105 stopped transmitting
The X5105 has stopped transmitting, or more accurately has stopped modulating.?
There is no output registered on the output power meter in any mode. The SWR scan is all over the [lace on 80m and a flat >10 elsewhere into? a good dummy load. The heat sink is getting hot so I suspect the finals have blown. Are there any schematics available so I can trouble shoot it? There is no point sending anywhere for repair from Australia.? It would take forever and probably cost as much as a new one. 73 Tony VK2VF ? |
X5105 Tuning Dial/Knob
When I tune around on any band, often when I reverse the turning direction, there is a 'click' or two of 'backlash' - no change in frequency with the first click, sometimes not even with the second click.
Has anyone else noticed that problem?? I'm wondering if it's normal or if my radio has a defect.? It has been that way since I received the rig about 5 months ago. Thanks for any feedback! -- Doug, K8RFT |

I ordered from Radioddity, and they were 'temporarily out' but they got more within 2 weeks and sent mine right away. ? -- Doug, K8RFT |

It might be best to ask those dealers directly.? And to mention the type(s) of support you might need.
In the past, MFJ "supported" the units they sold, but apparently the support wasn't always the best. Radioddity has a reputation for good support, and I bought my X551055 from them - but haven't needed any support.? They do have the current firmware on their website for download. -- Doug, K8RFT |
Making an audio cable for data modes with a Sabrent USB Soundcard
What follows is a lengthy backstory. If you just want to see the answers drop down 3 paragraphs.
?Yesterday I ventured into the great unknown of making an audio cable to interface between my sound card and the CE 19 device for use with data modes (FT8 & JS8CALL). I thought this would be a straight forward action. However, I began to question the correct wiring mostly because of the terminology used between the devices. On the CE-19 the AF in and out are marked on the device for the 3.5mm plug. Is that AF in and out from the radio or the soundcard? Then does the data in and data out on the soundcard plug the same as from the CE-19? Finally, with the supplied 3.5mm cables from the manufacturer which wires go to which part of the 3.5mm plug (a red, black & white wire)? Using a multimeter I could figure out the cable question. How it works The supplied audio cable from Xeigu has the following configuration: Base = Black wire Ring = Red wire Tip = White wire This means for making a soundcard cable, the white wire is AF out, Red wire is AF In, and the Black wire is the ground. After trial and error I determined that the Sabrent data out port (green) is the same as the AF Out on the CE-19. AF In is the data in, the pink port. The Sabrent has two 3.5mm female plugs, but the supplied audio cable from Xeigu has only one ground wire, so to make a cable requires a little extra wiring before you solder the wires to the male plugs. First take some spare wire and make two lengths of about 2.5-3 inches (Depending on how much you need for your 3.5mm plug case. Then join the two wires you made to the black wire. Now you have a ground wire for two plugs from the single black wire. (You will have to cut away some of the out cable cover to give you a longer set of wires to work with.) For the Data Out plug solder the black/Grd wire to the base of the plug. Next solder the white wire the tip of the plug. For the Data In plug solder the black/Grd wire to the base of the plug. Then solder the red wire to the ring on the plug. Verify all your connections with the multimeter, then screw on your plug covers and apply any shrink tube. (Remember to insert your shrink tube and plug covers over the wires before you start connecting wires to the 3.5mm plugs.). Plug your Data Out plug into the green port, your Data In plug into the pink port. Plug the green end of the supplied audio cable into the AF IN & Out port on the CE-19. Plug the DIN cable into the CE-19 and then into your radio. Now you are ready to do your favorite data mode on the X5105. (After plugging in the Sabrent to your computer/Raspberry Pi USB port.) I got into FT8 after making my cable last night and had a contact with a Wisconsin station from here in Colorado. According to the meter on the 5105 I was only putting out 3.5 watts. My antenna was a homemade dipole I made the day before strung from the ceiling in my shack as best I could hang it, which was very poor. I couldn¡¯t go outside and try it because it was snowing hard, with 15-20 mph winds and the temp was 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Attached are a few pictures to aid in understanding. Re: how to make PTT
Hi Doug,
I also have an IC-706MKIIG and that microphone does not work on the X5105. I read that you should not connect the microphone of the X5105 to the IC-706MKIIG because the microphone would break. Be careful! What I just discovered is the following: In the MIC connector of the X5105 pin 7 GND and pin 5 MICE are connected together. My headset microphone works well on pin 6 MIC and pin 7 GND = pin 5 MICE (MIC GND). For PTT I use the switch on top of the X5105 and set it to Toggle via the menu, this goes well. Unfortunately the VOX only works on the Line-IN and not on the Ext MIC (handheld microphone). I just sent an email to Xiegu in China with my questions and am curious to hear from them. 73, Dick? I want to use a headset microphoneDick - Thanks very much for asking this!? I want to know the same thing, and for the same reason. I also have an IC-706MkII and its mic connections are the same as the '7000. I should try the Xiegu mic on the Icom and see if it works. ? I bought a headset a while ago, but so far have not even tried the X5105 with it.? All I've done is listen, and work on finding a good, light, easily portable antenna for using the radio in parks and at beaches and any other interesting places to operate from.? But I would probably use VOX and not need PTT, although I'm definitely not sure of that. -- Doug, K8RFT |
Re: how to make PTT
Thanks Brian for your reply.
That's what I thought and came across anomalies. The X5105's microphone is identical on the outside to Icom's HM-151, which comes with the IC-7000. Also a lot of connections are similar. See below. ? With Icom is a GND for the Mic and a general GND for PTT. The IC-7000 will transmit when I connect 4 PTT and 7 GND. The X5105 does not transmit when I connect 4 and 7. Below the microphone of the X5105 as described in the manual. MSVSW will be 'M8V SW' but that is not important in this case. MICE will probably be MIC Earth (Ground) because I wouldn't know how else to interpret MICE, hi. I can currently use my headset microphone by pressing the PTT button on top of the X5105, but this is not convenient. Today I will test if the microphone works when I connect it to 6 MIC and 5 MICE. 73? Dick |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe 5105 seems to use the same configuration as the Icom radios. A switch setup for an Icom should work Dick.?Brian K0FBS? On Oct 25, 2020, at 4:26 PM, Dick de V <dl1clm@...> wrote:

Re: Test -- do not reply
Hi Doug, After communicating with the factory (it took a while!) and trying their suggestion,s they decided I should return it for repair and gave me an estimated cost for repair and shipping which I paid up front. |
