CW sidetone

I recently picked up a x1m Pro in working order. It seems to function as it should. It currently has v. 1.023, 1/21/2014.

First my electronic skills are marginal; I can solder two pieces of wire together and they will look like crap, joined but ugly. I try not to do any modifications because I will eventually create a non-working item.?

I am finding the CW sidetone extremely loud; using a straight key. I adjusted?the trim pot 90 degrees to the right (as shown in the documentation), still too loud. Adjusted once again 90 degrees to the right and still too loud.

If I bottom out the trim and back off 90 degrees from the bottom will this help lower the volume and not create a new problem?

I see there are several updated firmwares. Must they be installed in order or can I load the newest? Where can I find the upgrade procedure for updating the firmware?

Suggestions are welcomed.

Hi,
If the radio is working properly leave the firmware as is, if it aint broke dont fix it. the side tone?pot is very tricksy since its very small and goes around and around, I played with mine for quite a while, there is a sweet spot between loud and deafening, I cant?tell you where this is since the damned thing just turns 360.
But you will find it. I would rather have it external on the radio but theres?not much room for anything extra. Please note,?ive not seen this mentioned anywhere, there is a jumper board at the back of the radio behind the antenna jack. This can be fitted 4 different ways, but only one will work, in their wisdom they made this jumper board polarity sensitive. any other way will short the 9v onboard regulator. If the radio is working make a note on this little jumper board which way it should?be. The little jumper in the middle of the two boards can go either way as it is symmetrical.

Thank you for giving me more details on the pots.

?I thought they would bottom out but as you noted they just rotate 360. I will connect a dummy load and key the radio and rotate the pot for the lowest sound volume. That should help me find the best spot to bring the volume down.

I was able to upgrade the firmware from the link on the site. Radio working fine.

Confused on your mention of the jumpers near the antenna connection.

What do they do or control?

Next task is to configure the laptop with the radio to talk to Fldigi. Made the cable as noted. Need to configure a trrp plug for the laptop to Port the radio signals to the laptop.. Fldigi does see the radio.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
I mentioned the jumpers because sooner or later you may have to disassemble the radio for such things as replacement of the final transistor.?
The jumper boards connect the top and bottom boards together like a sandwich. The jumper at the rear is small with many tiny pins. This is the board which will allow you to fit it 4 different ways. 2 ways won't make any sense because the rear of the antenna jack gets in the way, but only when the radio is together.
Like I said, if the radio is working make a mark on it to let you know which way it was installed. Save a lot of headaches later. If you take one apart you will see what I?mean.

It's any easy radio to work on with a few little gotchas, I have two. The final transistor is easy to pop as there is no SWR limiter. If it goes short circuit it should take out the fuse IF ONE is fitted, they didn't come with one. A 2A fast blow should be plenty. The radio is quite hungry on receive, mine is around 450mA going to around 1.5A on TX.
Enjoy.

Thanks for the breakdown Nigel. As I mentioned earlier I am not that proficient working with electronics and will write down what you've mentioned and keep it with the radio.

I attached a dummy load to? the radio and while keying was able to bring the sidetone down to a tolerable level. It took over two turns but I was able to tune it down. I hadn't thought of doing it that way? until you mentioned the pots have no bottom.

Again, thanks for your help.
