? ?I don't know of any books regarding "Launches", but there are a heck of a lot of websites, even Clubs! (some folks just love ANYTHING Military Surplus!) dedicated to them. The problem is that the Good Ol'Nav categorizes a HUGE variety of sizes and cap abilities of its "Small Craft" all under the header of "Motor Launches". Everything from Dinghies and Ship's Crew Boats to Landing Craft, River PT Boats and even Minesweepers can get swept under that header. (Yeah. Just TRY and order PARTS in the Navy some time!!! What A Freaking MESS!!! SNAFU!!!) Since I really don't know what type or sizes the HORNET carried, I'm not too sure on what to look for.
? ?I found a pretty good listing with a lot of details, but I can't seem to find anything about Paint Schemes.? ? ? ?So, I tried to dig up some color images. Darn hard to find ones from WWII, but plenty of modern color images. ? ? ? ?Modern ? ? ? ? ? ? ?I really don't think that Ship's Boats paint schemes changed very much over the decades. These were WORK Boats, so things were kept pretty utilitarian. Predominately they were typical Nav Issue Haze Grey with Dark Grey almost Black below the waterline. There might be additional highlights for seating and engine covers done in the darker "Battleship Grey". For decking and gunwale footing, Black-Grey Non-Skid. With Black for any handgrips. Most all can be fitted with White or Light-Grey awnings for Tropical and/or Foul Weather, but I don't reckon that will be of any use for your applications. ? ?Though most all of that could and usually DOES change for the "Captain's and/or Admiral's Gig". Where there is as much damn brightwork, stained wood and white trimmings as the suck-up Boats could possibly squeeze in. And even the hull might be White with either Dark-Grey or Red-Lead below the waterline. = Gotta make the BIG brASS HATS > HAPPY <!!! Right???. . . . Even if they do slip and slide all around in their fancy dress shoes on those Polished Wood Decks!!! === Better Watch Them Damn Swells, Quartermaster!!! ? ?Funny, That, was a possible solution that I was thinking on as well!!! = Fool around with an image of the ship (either photo or painting) on the computer's "Paint Shop" or whatever the heck it's called that allows you to manipulate images these days, then print a series of them (for a Flat Top that BIG you'd need a number of them!) onto either cardstock or even thin plastic sheeting. = A bit of work, but I think it would work out pretty darn good!?? ? ?It's things like this that often get me to thinking on WHO the Boatswain's Mates were who originally got to unleash their artistic talents to "Tag" a canvas THAT HUGE for the first time, and how many of their kids or grandkids followed in their footsteps all over our towns!!!?
