Wavetek 4032

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased 3 X Wavetek Stabilock 4032, 1 unit with GSM option and DV/AC ?volt meter, 2 units standard fitment. One unit no CRT, prospect for LCD here. I managed to get 1 unit up and running with CRT rebuild and several shorted 100MFD 6V SMD caps and the dreaded leaky caps, all after 24 hrs of analysis and repair, this should be a good reference machine to work through the other units with varying issues from, no CRT, PSU with no+15 and other PSU with no +5/15v and things yet to be discovered. ??

I have downloaded what ever I can find thinking the 4031 is very similar, but there does appear to be significant differences. Are there any 4032 schematics around, ?none I could find, is this the case?

quite a different beast to the IFR com120 and Marconi 2955, but still worth resurrecting over the winter period in VK

Thanks,

Have that already. My initial posts are not in order. I managed to get options plugin sorted, autodetect.

Just replacing SMD electros where needed.

Repair tip for these units:

Swap all SMD Electrolytics as long as they have the grey-ish black polarity marking. If they have a glossy dark black marking they are already new. The grey-ish are leaking or will leak in a few days. There is no way around that and if you don't change them while you at it, they will get you sooner or later but 99% sooner. If you keep them in the unit, they will pay back with killing copper layers and eating up the contacts of nearby SMD ceramic caps or resistors. Except a light tint to the color, you cannot see the problem. But if you try to find the problem, you will find out, that the solder contact plate has lost contact to the internal structure.?

On the Host and Slave computer the original THT caps will get dry, sometimes they even burst into flames when getting a short.?

Unfortunately most of the 403x series units where produced, when the industry had its capacitor manufacturing disaster. So if you want to give your 4031 a long live, replace them and replace them all, then check again and replace the ones you missed.
I have already repaired 6 of them in different states and feature sets. I shift another three ahead just cause I do not want ot replace another 350 caps per unit... But damage is not getting better if you leave them in...

Hi Ulrich,

Thanks for the feedback. Onto the second unit. Unit 1 complete, powers up and passes all tests/spec. 10MHz internal ref has aged, external 10MHz ref works well. ?1991 build.

No. 1 CRT swapped to second unit to see power up state, this has FEX, but several tests fail. This will be a bit tricky, cannot swap modules so easily.

Have others worked on FEX unit, 1996 build, I do wonder if precious owner may have mixed RF module cables up. Most panduit cable ID tags missing, I am putting back how I found it as photographed.

If someone has a photo of underside RF interconnect cable, that would be handy, please.

Will Endeavour to doc and discover more tonight.

Kind regards

Hi Everyone,

Found swapped rf connection on added FEX RF PCB. Now have 4032 with FEX running.

I had the impression with FEX you also get Spectrum analyser extension. To my dissatisfaction, no, only to 1GHz.

There is a package M248 308 or 366, assume this is firmware, it does not imply additional h/w other than FEX?

Hi Gerlad,

if you could make a list of options (additional modules) this 4032 has installed, I can send you the wiring for the RF harness.

Ulrich

Hi Ulrich,

Just swapped options modules, now have fairly advanced 4032.

option installed are as per photo, plus GSM. No analyser option or tracking unit.

Interesting comment you made about wiring harness.

Just RTFM, section 9/10 does not provide much.

still need to navigate my way through the units operations. Very different to a IFR COM120 that I restored back from the abyss.

?

Hi Ulrich,

Looking at manual, section 12, Stabilock 4032 Lifeline, my host-mcu is at 6.10, would need 6.13 and up.

I may copy all my EPROMS for safe keeping and share. There does not appear to be much support around as yet.

Others might be interested on my 6.10.

Hehe, no I meant the types of RF modules installed. Duplex and such?

I do have a 4031 with almost all-in configuration including FEX. I am still searching for the correct analyzer option as mine is only working partly.. or sometimes...
I may open up the box an take a few pictures.?

The documentation says that GSM has a different wiring compared to standard...
I am still searching, but only found the Standard + Analyzer + GSM configuration:

?

Hi Ulrich,

Not sure if the picture below tell you the modules fitted. That last module, slot 5 is quite different to both my other units.

Oops,

Added photo.

Another wiring config. Non FEX units and no GSM.

Hi Ulrich,

Again, thanks for the info. We now have three RF module configs. What I sent is standard with FEX, Analyser and GSM.

The other shot I sent, and quite different to the above is Standard and Analyser.

Question to moderator, I will be copying all EPROMs from my three units, any Delta file can be uploaded to this group. Any preference where to save, create a separate folder(s) for specific model/type and load .hex files in that folder?
