The closest POTA park I never knew about
7
One of my Intel ham friends just pointed out to me that US-3424 stretches throughout the Portland/Vancouver area. So SR-14, I-5, I-205, and I-84 are all in the "park". And it may be possible to have a POTA activation on your commute to work. I never knew. 73, Mike KK7ER

Any new general class operators looking for an HF rig?
7
Hi All, I just upgraded my HF rig and my Yaesu FT-450D needs a new home. I bought it new in 2018 and have really enjoyed it. It is a great modern entry level HF rig (160-6m, auto-tuner, 100W, AM/FM/SSB/CW) and has served me well. It is in very good condition. The only known issue is that the cooling fan rattles. I spoke with the Yaesu service department, ordered the part, and hope to have the new fan installed in a couple weeks. The price is negotiable, but I see they are going for around $600 online. It comes with stock microphone and power cable. I would throw in a 30A power supply (MFJ-4230MV), computer CAT interface cable, and computer audio interface. And I'd be glad to deliver it and help the new owner get it set up and running smoothly (if necessary). If interested, please contact me directly -- I'm in the Green Book or you can direct message me through groups.io. 73, Mike KK7ER

Anyone have an M17/ OpenRTX radio?
I have one of the Connect Systems CS7000 M17 HTs. It’s UHF only. Is there anyone else with M17 capability? If so let’s see if we can make contact. the latest firmware makes it a bit easier to switch M17 to DMR/FM. Michael AE7GQ

APRS EMERGENCY! beacon this afternoon...
2
I monitor APRS on my VHF/UHF radio and at 2:37PM this afternoon I received an emergency beacon sent by KF7KRD. I got his name and address from the FCC and called 911 for a welfare check. APRS showed it as a mobile at his address. the CRESA 911 patched me through to Tigard 911 dispatch and they sent a police unit out to Thomas's residence. Thank God, Thomas was out there fiddling with his radio and had no idea he was beaconing an accidental APRS EMERGENCY! transmission. The Tigard Police officer gave me a call back and said he was okay. I was surprised that the 911 dispatchers hadn't even heard of a amateur radio APRS EMERGENCY! beacon. -- Dave - KJ7WUZ

antenna holders
6
I am just now getting into activating for POTA. My antennas are not attached to my minivan or my Suburban. I want to know what you all carry your antennas in. I don't want to just lay them in the back of either vehicle. (I'm sorry to have to miss this next meeting on GoKits. I am organizing mine at this time. But I will watch it later.)

Is 10 meters open?
4
Tuning across the SSB portion of 10m doesn't always reveal if the band is open, especially on weekdays. However, there is a better way. Between roughly 28.200 and 28.290 MHz quite a few mostly low-power beacon stations transmit 24/7. It's surprising how often I find no signals above 28.300 MHz, yet tuning down, there are the beacons! The band IS open. They also show how QRP with a basic antenna can go a long way. The only catch is they identify with CW (maybe a reason to learn code!). They usually have their location or grid square, so you know where they are, and are not limited to the U.S. Here are the beacons I heard today in 5 minutes of tuning despite finding no signals otherwise: 28.250 KC5SQD grid square EL29 (Missouri) 28.255 WI5V Oklahoma 28.260 W1LSU Minden, LA running 4w into a Hamstick dipole at 35ft 28.273 N0KP grid square EN34 (Minnesota) running 1w into a "chain link fence vertical" 28.280 K5AB Goldwaith in Central Texas with a booming signal running 50w into a ground plane 28.289 WB5DXZ Oklahoma City running 5w into a vertical This is what the K5AB beacon sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeQkeHd64IE 73, Mark KC9C

April Membership Meeting Presentation
In case you didn't see this in the weekly newsletter: April Membership Meeting Presentation: Radio Go Kits Do you operate remotely? POTA? SOTA? Event support? If you have a Radio Go Kit and would like to show it off, please bring it to the Membership Meeting on April 11th. If you would like to talk about it, please feel free to prepare a short presentation discussing the process you went through. If possible, please have a list of parts you used. My goal is to put a document together that has ideas and resources for those that don’t have a radio kit yet and are thinking of putting one together. If you normally participate through Zoom, don’t feel left out. If you can put together a short (5 slides maximum) PowerPoint or Google Slides file and email it to: radiow0ast@.... When it is your turn, we will load up your slides and let you talk about them. If you plan on presenting, please email me @ radiow0ast@... no later than Wednesday April 9th to let me know so that I can put the list together. I would like to have as much audience participation as possible. Brian Astle CCARC VP Radiow0ast@... -- Brian - W0AST

History of the term "Green Book"?
5
I've just gone with the flow for the past few years, but why is the member directory referred to as the "green book"? In my googling I've found that the Green Book was a travel/business guide for black americans by Hugo Green, which explains how the word "green" came to be used in the title. I also found that the New York City calls their employee directory "The Green Book" after the color of the cover back when it was published. Given that the club's "green book" isn't a business guide nor a service directory, why is that name used? Why isn't it just the "club directory"? Any insight would be appreciated. -- Mike H KK7LNF

HF Rig Repair
7
Anyone here, or anyone know of someone, who does or is willing to do some HF radio repair for reasonable rates? Got a couple that need some attention, and it's becoming apparent that I'm just not going to get the time to learn about and do what they need any time soon. Thanks for any info, Ron, KA7RON

Ft Vancouver Activation
2
I was out at Ft Vancouver doing a Pota activation yesterday, only my 2nd time activating. I was there over 3 hrs and got a whopping 2 contacts. Both those contacts were within a minute of each other. The rest of the time I was enjoying the outdoors. I did set up my rig and it worked too. That was encouraging. Am hoping to activate from BG Lake next time.

Looking for any feedback or comments, good or bad, on the Yaesu HT5DR radio. I may be able to buy a used but nearly new radio for a great price and was wondering if it is worth it. Scott

Batteries

I would like to know what kind of batteries to use for Pota. I need a Lithium Ion Phosphate deep cycle rechargeable 12v and would like maybe 10 to 15aH. I'd like to know what brands are out there that are good ones. Opinions please. 73, Marilyn, Af7MM

POTA activations
4
Yesterday I went to Fort Vancouver and activated POTA for my first time. I made contacts with the east coast mainly, and ended up with 23 contacts in 50 minutes. I'm pretty pleased. I've hunted from home many times but now I want to activate. I am hoping to go to Battle Ground Lake in the next few weeks and see what I can do.
