Rear tire width question

Does anyone know what the maximum rear tire width can be without
complications? I would like to upgrade to a 140 or 150 if possible.

Thanks

Widest I've seen so far is a 130. Anybody seen larger? Why would you be going with a wider tire?

I'm not sure I would call that an upgrade unless you are just going for
a custom look. I went the other way with my new rear, a 120/80. Call
me crazy but I think it handles better at slow speeds with the narrower
tire. And yes, I like the look better.

I would hesitate to put a 120/80 on. These bikes are prone to sitting down at the rear and a 120/80 will lower the back more than the stock 130/80.
?
The tyre you want is a 120/90...slightly taller.
?
Either tyre will improve low speed handling because the rolling radius is closer to the front tyre's.
?
Putting a fat rear tyre on will simply bugger up the handling. It will feel wierd tipping into bends because the rear radius is so much bigger than the front's, it'll have significantly LESS grip, especially in the wet, because the LARGER contact patch will have less pressure ( weight) per square inch...And it'll look stupid, like someone fitted a big rear tyre to pretend they have a really powerful engine and never go round corners. ...:-)

You should know that a wider tire than the stock 130 will slow lean over, so this isn't a performance "upgrade", it will mostly be an appearance change..and the older bikes had skinnier tires than our 130s though, so you are going to change that nostalgic look.

Sport bikes don't have fat tires to get more traction, the compound their tire is made of gives them the traction..the wider tire gives more surface area which helps dissapate heat. Sport bikes compensate for the additional weight and resistance to lean by using shorter rims, typically 17 inch rims, although 16s were popular front rim size in the 80s.

A wider tire will most likely require a wider rim as well.

Why would a 120/80 lower the bike more than the stock 130/80? Isn't
the 120/130 designating the width only? If they're both 80s they
should be the same height. As far as putting a 90 on the rear come
closer to the rolling radius of the front, why not put a lower height
tire on the front to come closer to the rolling radius of the rear?

The "80" part is the percentage of the width (the 120 or 130 part). So, 80% of 120 is less than 80% of 130, so you get a less tall tire with a 120/80.

Thanks for that info Dennis.
Stock 130/80 sidewall height = 104mm
100/90 sidewall height = 90mm
So with a 14mm sidewall height difference x 2 as there are two
sidewalls in the diameter) the rear has 28mm or one inch taller
overall sidewall height than the front tire. So the stock 100/90 19
and the stock 130/80 18 fully assembled and inflated are actually the
same size. If this is true then why go to a 120/90 rear and upset the
balance?

No...the '80' is a percentage of the other figure so a 120/80 is 80% of 120 mm which is 96 mm...Or 9.6 cms tall. The 120/90 is 108mm or 10.8 cms tall and the 130/80 is 10.5 cms. The 120/90 is 1.2 cms, or half an inch taller...And when we are talking about the weave occurring somewhere within the 4" of rear end travel, half an inch is significant...even that 3mm between the 120/90 and the 130/80 seems to make a difference!

It's not the '90' bit that is the rolling radius, but the 120. The rear tyre is 120mm wide, the front is 100mm wide so the 120 is 20mm, or 2cms wider than the front whereas the 130 is, yup, you guessed it, 30mm wider. Getting the tyre widths similar helps the bike roll smoothly over

The 120 is taller actually. The 120/90 is 12cms wide and 10.8 cms tall. The 4.00/18 is 4 inches ( 10.2cms) wide and 4 inches ( 10.2cms) tall. I traded height for fast turning. It's also ?10 cheaper!

They are not the same size. The rear tyre is 30 mm wider.
?
There are two issues here. The height issue is to do with handling, the width issue to do with matching radii. The 120/90 is slightly taller than the 130, which is good for high speed stability and secure handling. The 120 is also not as wide as the 'picked for fashion looks' 130 and so is nearer to the 100 front. The front is also a 90 profile so has a similar curve to the 120/90. The 80's are a shallower side to side radius.

Thanks everyone, for all the info. I am a former Harley guy who has
recently converted to the cult of cafe racer. About wanting a wider
rear tire... I guess old habits die hard.

You have a wonderfuly responsive community here. Thanks again,
