wolf
There apparently are only 169 mexican wolves known in New Mexico. Mostly I think in the bootheel, the gila, and into Arizona mtns. They need to be in a pack to bring down their normal big game like deer and elk. https://nywolf.org/2025/03/wandering-wolf-ella-found-deceased-in-new-mexico/ fd

Double SOTA Goat Day April 3rd
This posting is meant to "alert" all our W5N friends about our Big Day! Shane/N0QLR and I/KD8EQA are both at 997 activator points, and hope to join the herd this Thursday, April 3rd. We will be activating The Pulverizer, W0C/SP-092. Any chasers who would like to to chase us can monitor N0QLR-7 on aprs.fi. Then, watch for our Spots. Our Alerts are for 16:15 UTC, and we will be working all the bands (Shane on CW, me on SSB) in an attempt to work all our friends near and far. Our first HF band will probably be 10m, to give our European chasing network a good window of opportunity... followed by 40m, the band I hope will let us work W5N, and other nearby Associations. WG0AT and KF0RIG will also be activating with us. Hope to work many of you this Thursday! Ray / KD8EQA

Activation Plan
W5N/OT-025 Cerro de los Taoses Wednesday April 2, 2025 Weather will be cool with temps in the 40's under partly cloudy skies and winds about 10 mph. Alan suggested this one as a nice lower elevation summit. I have never been up it so no pictures or drive tracks, yet. Dress warm. After consideration and trying to decide whether to take my Bronco or ride up with Alan, NM5S. I've decided to take the Bronco to check access to a parking spot closer to the summit than where others have started. The road I'm looking for is .5 mile west of where the .6 mile hike to summit starts. If I'm lucky, the hike will be about .1 mile. If not then the .6 should be easy. Our plan is to depart my QTH by 0800 and meet up with Alan in Santa Fe then travel on to Toas. Then across the Rio Grande Gorge bridge and on to the summit. QRV around 1730 to 1800 UTC. 73 all WB5USB Geo

New Mexico history: https://archaeology.org/issues/march-april-2017/features/new-mexico-pueblo-revolt/ Something more about the Jemez, Cochiti, San Ildefonso, and the reconquest. I saw the ruin of the Cochiti ancestral pueblo revealed in the aftermath of the fire. Black Mesa, the mesa you see to the north from Otowi peak and just north of present day San Ildefonso, is the mesa of which they speak. I have been up it with Enky, the head kashari at that time, and he told me his version of the battle there. He said that the Spanish canon could not reach the mesa top, and showed me where the canon balls had hit the sides of the mesa. He showed me the cave that is mentioned, and he showed me how braves were able to climb down the back side of the mesa, and run down river to solicit help from the Cochiti. They then caught the Spanish between them and chased them back to santa fe. Enky said they caught and killed the Spanish attackers, but since the attackers included vargus himself, they must have caught only some of the Spaniards. Enky showed me shrines on top of black mesa, in Tewa called, Tunyo, and he showed me river rocks. The geologist in me was puzzled by river rocks on top of the basaltic mesa, but now I see the Indians carried them up to use as weapons to, throw onto the Spaniards below! More about Enky¡ Encarnasio Pena, Indian name, spoken Soquawa but he always wrote it Soqween, he was born in the early 19teens. He was educated at IAIA as a painter. He was a teen when he was part of a team from Harvard that excavated the Pecos Ruin in Rowe. He told me stories about his time there. He also was involved excavating Bandelier which is ancestral to the San Ildefonso. https://www.adobegallery.com/artist/Jos_Pea_Soqween_1902-197915705048 typical of his paintings: Enky said the dancers always wore sprigs of the spruce tree. He said it was a symbol of purity. The origin of this tradition comes from Spruce Tree House in Mesa Verde and the full story can be found told by White Bear Fredericks in Book of the Hopi¡ I walked up canyon from Spruce tree house as described by White Bear and found the story in the petroglyph just as White Bear drew in an illustration in the book. fred

First the good news, Steve Gachupin, King of the Mountain, was able to return home today after nearly three months in hospital then assisted care. Steve is six time winner of the Pikes Peak Marathon in the 70¡¯s and a very dear friend. Tom says there is a ruin on top of Guadalupe Mesa. This is between La Casa Mesa, and Garcia Mesa, both SOTA peaks. Coues Deer 7
T-Mobile I had never heard of Coues Deer. It seems that this miniature deer is famous for stealth. It is stated to only be found in the Boot Heel of NM. https://azstateparks.com/coues-deer But then while doing a SOTA peak north of Mt Taylor, I find a tiny deer skull. It is a Coues! They are not supposed to be there, but obviously, they are. On the trip last week, I did not see any, but I found miniature deer prints and tiny deer droppings, on W5N/AP-048. I just know this was Coues deer. Steve, N2IC, said he has seen them on his property near Silver, but not often. Keep your eyes pealed out there, maybe see one! Fred

Nice Day on Colorado Peak w/K1JD 4
A couple of very cool things to day on Colorado Peak. We have heard of and seen signs wild horses in the Caja Del Rio. Today John and I finally saw a pair. They were clearly not domesticated, snorting at us and pawing the dirty aggressively . Below is a picture of the horses. The second thing was a run of 10 EU stations on the 10m. I¡¯ve experienced this much DX on a Summit in New Mexico. I went to 10m, just to se what might be there and this is what I found, starting at 1653z. A nice day indeed. The logging program is HAM2K, a fantastic app. It exports the logs into ADIF for easy uploading. I never have to reenter anything. 73, Mike AD5A

NF reopens Rio en Medio 2
The Santa Fe National Forest has rescinded the Medio Fire closure order, effective March 14. The closure area included all Forest Service lands, roads, and trails within an area that is roughly defined by Rio Nambe Trail #160 on the north, Borrego Trail #150 and Forest Road 412 on the east, Forest Road 102 on the south, and back up the forest boundary line on the west to meet Rio Nambe Trail #160. The closure order was implemented after the Medio Fire in 2021 to protect public health and safety. While roads and trails in the area no longer fall under this closure order, certain roads may remain closed under seasonal weather closures. Please contact the Espa?ola District Office at 505-753-7331 for more information about specific winter road closures. To view the closure order and associated map visit our Alerts and Closures webpage: https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/santafe/alerts-notices This should make W5N/PW-018 "9700"

San Pedro
T-Mobile SRI John¡¯s knee was bothering him, so I went up solo. Road was fine with the Xterra. The route up the ridgeline seemed more open than ever before, seems like the dead pinon had collapsed and the deer had pressed routes on up. Little wind, temperatures pleasant in the 40¡¯s. Worked F4WBN and EA4R on 17m. Seemed like 15M was not getting out so well. Below is an Indian made digging tool I found. Likely used to dig out interesting minerals, copper and gold, probably for jewelry. It is quite big, salad plate sized, and obviously purposefully shaped. 73, fred kt5x

Activation Report for Palomas Peak W5N/SI-010
My original plan was to activate Sandia Crest/SI-001, but ultimately weather became the deciding factor. It snowed overnight the night before my activation. In the morning, I was using NM-165 to approach the Crest Road to the summit (I didn't realize using NM-536 was the better/paved option). As I headed up NM-165 the road started out dry, but became snow covered, and then progressively deeper in snow. There was one set of tracks in the snow from a prior vehicle, but the tracks were wider apart than they are on my vehicle, so I could only use one track at time. At the point where I was questioning my ability to get up the Crest Road (steeper grade) in 4 or more inches of snow, I saw the trailhead parking for Palomas Peak, and decided Palomos (plan B) was the better/wiser option. In hindsight, I believe I had a more enjoyable SOTA experience for the day than I would have had activating Sandia Crest. I also learned later from KT5X's posting that the Crest Road was closed the night before... I'm not sure when it reopened. The trail up Palomas Peak is a delightful trail. The first half of the trail is fairly flat until after crossing the Las Huertas Creek, then it's a steady hike up. Heading up I used micro-spikes (and gaiters) for the snow. As I hiked up the trail, the residual, low level clouds from the snowstorm, blocked my view of Sandia Crest and the surrounding area. It wasn't until I was on the summit that the clouds eventually burned off. The temps were on the low side, but with 2 or 3 layers I was comfortable... and it wasn't windy... so that helped too. My first contact was on 2m was with Jon/KC2SHO who says "Hang on!" "Don't leave this frequency... I'll text the gang." And he did! I got a bunch more contacts, many of whom followed me to the HF bands. Back at the trailhead, the snow on the road had melted and it was easy travelling on the muddy road back to pavement, and then to the Mine Shaft Bar (Thanks Fred/KT5X... great recommendation!). Also, thanks to the local contacts who made my day so much fun; KC2SHO, NK5W, WA6BJH, KI5VJJ, W5BYZ, K5ZN, and N5PEZ. I've attached some pics.

Grand Central report
T-Mobile Popular for its extensive cactus gardens, Grand Central is as those who have been there before will expect, except for this: day use fees are waived for all NM residents from November 1 to April 30 in all state parks and lands. Light wind and temperatures in the 50¡¯s made for a very pleasant hike. Strava says it was a 1,200 ft ascent, done in about an hour twenty. I particularly liked finding the rock pole support built several years ago still intact, hi hi. TNX to CN and N9KW for the chases. Condx fine, could see snow capped probably Wheeler and probably Canjilon. 73, John and Fred KX2 KH1

146.52 2
WELL - FIRST AND FOREMOST - SOTA IS NOT A CONTEST! Neither is POTA. It is much more like DXing, in where some operator travels to a specific location and others try to contact that location. The 146.520 frequency is the national calling frequency. Generally speaking, if you are going to look for anyone to be listening to a simplex frequency, this will be it. There is nothing wrong with calling CQ on the frequency, but a QSO should be moved off that frequency. That is just good manners. Yes - some lack good manners. There is also the wilderness protocol. People monitor 146.520 listening for emergency calls. This is less of an issue in large metropolitan areas, but if near a wilderness region that should be considered. I personally monitor 146.520 a lot. I will answer calls there, but will not have a QSO there beyond a few short words like "I'm in your driveway". Vy73 - Mike - KD5KC. El Paso, Texas - DM61rt.
