The Kentucky CW Traffic Net from Ray, WB4ZDU

Subject: The Kentucky CW Traffic Net

Good evening Bill. This is WB4ZDU - Ray Smith. I am writing you in the hope that you will share this email with your local club members.

I am the net manager of KYN, the Kentucky CW Traffic Net. To my knowledge KYN is the only state-wide traffic net that handles traffic in preparation for an emergency. KYN has been in existence for well over 60 years. We meet nightly at 0200Z on 3537 KHz.

I am writing to you because we need at least one (and would love to have more than 1) station in the Nicholasville and surrounding area to handle traffic (messages) that come to KYN. The traffic net normally lasts between 10 and 20 minutes each night. It is not necessary that a person check in to the net every night, although some stations do. It is important, however, that KYN have the ability to handle messages going to any place in Kentucky, and having someone from the Nicholasville and surrounding area being part of KYN is very much needed. Several KYN members have been handling traffic on KYN for well over 20 years and obviously enjoy it. We are not a "speed" net. Typically, the net is operated at about 13 words per minute, although the net control station always slows down when appropriate.

I don't know if you have any Zoom meetings, but if you do I would very much like the opportunity to tell your club members about KYN. If you or any of your members have any questions or would like to talk with me please let me know. For those members of your club that enjoy CW and public service I think that they would find KYN to be a lot of fun. Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated.

73 Ray, WB4ZDU

DroidStar

Just found out about the "DroidStar" smartphone app. It's native to Android Devices and the Google Play Store, but also can be used on iPhone and iOS devices via Apple's "TestFlight" Beta Tester app and following a github link.
?
There's some guy on YouTube that explains how to set it all up, and includes a link to the download.
?
Easy way to get on DMR, DStar, P25, and Yaesu Fusion digital modes using your smartphone. Just passing along the info.
?
Here's a link to the YouTube video showing iPhone set up. If you have an Android it's obviously easier.

High Altitude Balloon Presentation Replay #zoom

If you missed the meeting, we had a wonderful presentation by Bill WB8ELK, audio at times gets a little digital due to the low bandwidth Bill has on top of the Mountain In Huntsville, AL. But we all learned to listen through noise... here is a link to that reply.

Re: Raspberry pi

I use one for a UHF DVAP USB dongle for D-star and I have one for Flight Aware flight tracking, and I have one with Xastir on it for a portable APRS station. So I have three in use in the shack.

The Raspberry Pi is a great tool for anyone that likes to learn more and do more with HAM radio and computers.? The information is all on the internet.? The challenge is to search out the details for the specific radio you have and it's digital interfaces.? To be honest it doesn't require much programming, but does take a lot of searching for a the missing links in every explanation.? I spent months on it.

I'm very happy with the RPi?for FLDigi for. PSK31 etc, and WSJTX for FT-8, using a Yaesu FT-991a.
Most rescent I bought a ZUM Hotspot for PiStar and find it a lot of fun for digital radio, worldwide with no antenna, just internet.

Good Luck, 73

First, thanks for responding to my inquiry. Being disabled and on a fixed income kinda limits me too what I can do. I pretty much have to work with what I have. I am unable to do dstar and dmr because I don't have the equipment. I was considering perhaps some of the other digital modes like ft-8 etc. It will be something that I can physically do myself. I do however have a thing for portable operation so something my wife can help me do. I chose the raspberry pi because it was inexpensive and some what powerful for it's size. I have done some programming back in the day with Cobol, Fortran and Pascal but not sure how that would translate to the pi. So what do you think? Something I can do or should I try another approach?

Re: Raspberry pi

Again, thanks Fred and Josh for sharing you projects with me. After a day of reflection, I realize how narrow my focus was for this powerful little device. So, back to the books for me.

Thanks guys.
