WinterHeat Simplex Contest

KO4ZMX, Debby Dixon

WinterHeat is a month-long amateur radio simplex event held in January. The goal and purpose is for amateur radio operators to make as many contacts as possible over a month-long period of time using only designated simplex frequencies.?

One contact per day, per frequency is allowed with any station per 24-hour period using UTC time. This is a technician friendly event using 6m, 2m, 1.25m, 70cm, and 33cm FM frequencies and also using DMR, Dstar, and Fusion simplex on 2m and 70cm.?

This is an awesome event for new operators to get to know others in simplex range of their station.?

It's also an awesome event to test the simplex range of your station and experience how propagation behaves day to day.?

For more information and to register visit ?

Free Amateur Extra Review Course

KO4ZMX, Debby Dixon

Please be aware that the course begins on January 3, NOT on the 10th as told in the handout at the meeting last week.
Starting January 3, 2023, the Hazel Park, MI, Amateur Radio Club (HPARC) will present on Tuesday evenings their Extra Class license review course. This course is taught by Joe Raznik, WB8ADX and he is assisted by Ken Krause, AD8M. Both these men are very experienced ham operators, and they have a background in electronics.

The course runs from 7 to 9 pm on Tuesday nights and is taught via Zoom so you can take from the comfort of your home. It will help you better understand the theory and practical application of the 525 Extra Class questions pool.?The Course will cover all?the information and skills that you will need to answer the 50-question FCC Extra Class License Examination.?

I am not sure I can provide an exact length of the class due to recent course revisions, but I would expect it to run through mid-May. ?There are 11 chapters in the ARRL Extra Class License Manual. ?Many of these chapters require 3?Tuesday?nights to review, several chapters two nights and a couple only 1 night.

There is no charge for this Zoom course.? However, it is suggested that you purchase the ARRL Extra Class License Manual. I took this review course, and it was the difference maker for me in passing the Extra Class exam earlier this year.?

For information to access the course, please contact, Robert Sparks,?

License Study Aids

Attached are three study aids put together for the Technician, General and Extra classes of licensing. These PDF's are the current published VE question pools with the WRONG ANSWERS removed. Feel free to distribute these to anyone needing additional study materials. Also, if you notice any error or ommissions, please drop me a line.

For many people taking the licensing exams who use rote memorization methods, these will help you to memorize the right answers. The idea here is that if you use the pools to study, why study the wrong answers as well as the right ones? Studying the wrong answers makes them familiar when taking practice exams or the real one.

No grade school, middle school, high school, trade school, college or university teaches the wrong answers along with the right ones. Only time we see wrong answers are on tests. Recognize the right answer when testing.

I personalty suggest anyone using these study aids to learn the material take some extra time to use other materials (license guides, handbooks, elmers, etc) to understand those questions which puzzle you. You don't need a degree in EE or Physics to pass the extra, but having an understanding of the principles and concepts will help your analytical thinking as an extra class amateur.

GONE: GE 110W 2M Power Amplifier - Experimenter Special

The amplifier has been spoken for.

Thanks - Bill

FREE: GE 110W 2M Power Amplifier - Experimenter Special

FREE for local pickup - first contact gets it.

I have surplus to my needs a General Electric continuous duty 2M 110W power amplifier assembly for FM base station or repeater service. The PA unit was from a GE repeater. It requires 100mW drive and is adjustable from 20-110W output. It requires 12VDC at a minimum of 25A for full power output. Some work will be required to adapt it to a handheld or base transceiver.

The amplifier is about 19" wider, 6" high and 6" deep. It has a large heatsink across the back side. The weight is about 15-20lbs.

Here is a manual on the amplifier:

Unfortunately, this amplifier is heading for the recycle bin if there are no takers in a week.

Thanks - Bill

Expanded Post On $35 FCC License Fee

Some complained to me via email about the URL only with the notice of the $35 fee...so I have copied and pasted the info from?

I did NOT include the URL for the CORES login in this post...one will have to go to the URL noted above for that.

Daryl Stout, WX4QZ, UALR Ham Radio Club VE Team Liaison

***
?
The new Amateur Radio license application fees will take effect on April 19, 2022. The Federal Communications Commission's authority to impose and collect fees is mandated by Congress.?
?
The $35 application fee, when it becomes effective on April 19, will apply to new, modification (upgrade and sequential call sign change), renewal, and vanity call sign applications. The fee will be per application.
?
Administrative updates, such as a change of name, mailing or email address, will be exempt from fees.
?
VECs and Volunteer Examiner (VE) teams will not have to collect the $35 fee at exam sessions.? Once the FCC application fee takes effect, new and upgrade applicants will pay the $15 exam session fee to the ARRL VE team as usual, and pay the $35 application fee directly to the FCC by using the CORES FRN Registration system.

(Side Note: Other VE Teams and VEC's may charge a different amount...some VEC's/VE Teams have no fee at all. If you go through the W5YI VEC on the QRZ website, there is an additional fee to pay. Also, no word on what individuals who do not have a bank account (checking or savings) or a credit or debit card will be able to do. It is unwise to send cash through the mail, as it's "just asking to get stolen". So, I'd contact the FCC directly for information if you fall into that category. But, I believe that any government benefit (disability payment), tax refund, etc., are now done by electronic funds transfer (EFT) to a bank account, and are NOT mailed to the individual...to avoid being stolen. DS).
?
When the FCC receives the examination information from the VEC, it will email a link with payment instructions to each successful candidate who then will have?10 calendar days from the date of the email to pay. After the fee is paid and the FCC has processed an application, examinees will receive a second email from the FCC with a link to their official license. The link will be good for 30 days.
?
Additionally, the FCC stated that applications processed and dismissed will not be entitled to a refund. This includes vanity requests where the applicant does not receive the requested call sign.
?
The FCC published the notice in the Federal Register on March 23, 2022, stating that the amateur radio application fees, including those associated with Form 605 application filings, would become effective on April 19, 2022.
?
Further news and instructions will follow as the FCC releases them.

**
?
FCC Instructions (not applicable until fees take effect on April 19):?

If paying fees for an application filed via the Universal Licensing System, please use the CORES FRN Registration system.
