ARES Members
Please note that we agreed to cancel our meeting this month on December 12, 2024 and resume in January. ?
?
Our antenna building workshop will be January 4, 2025 during the W4DHN workday.? More info is on the Groups.io.? The antenna building is open to anyone as long as you let us know you are coming so we can advise you what pieces/parts you will need to bring (or make arrangements to purchase) to help build the antenna you would like.? The workshop begins at 9am at the American Red Cross Office, in Dothan.
?
Snacks and Coffee will be available;-)
?
Also of note: ?Alan and I totally understand being busy and/or having too many irons in the fire.? Our ARES club is not a mandatory show up each month or even Task Book progress each month.? Yes, in a perfect world we would all love that, but with that said, if you don¡¯t enjoy learning about the ARES world or helping others/our community, then just tell us you are not interested BUT,¡ if you are interested, at least stay on the fringes and keep your ears and eyes open to the information and jump in when you can.? It is always better to be at least somewhat familiar with a program than clueless when you want or need to jump in and help.? We are in this for the long haul to become better HAM operators and to understand how we best can serve when disasters/tragedies happen. It is not a race, just a progression of becoming more informed and knowing who and where we need to contact/network when the chips are down.
Teamwork is always the best work.
?
I appreciate all of you!
?
Happy Holidays,
Barbara

Re: ADPH Houston County Stations

Thank you for the update on the local Health Department station.? That was the one I intended when I said "local ADPH station".? I knew the antennas were damaged, but did not know anything further.? I'm glad to hear that repairs are in progress and that the equipment is present and operational.? If you guys need repair help or parts for the station, let me know and I will fill in.
?
I'm currently working with Alan KQ4ELM on build outs for portable stations.? I also have some other things in the works, such as coordination with the shelters around the community, which I will bring to the table once they solidify.? If anyone has any further ideas or insight regarding permanent stations with the Flowers station being out of commission, please bring it up for discussion.

Re: ADPH Houston County Stations

There is no need to reach out to the Houston County Health Department, if that is one on the list. There are several WARC club members, including myself, who have been working with them to get their station back up and running. They are aware that a new HF antenna is needed at their?location on Cottonwood Road. If other people start reaching out separately, it is only going to create confusion. Both HF and VHF/UHF radios are on site and working.

I cannot lend any insight into the Flowers Hospital situation, other than to say the money for these stations came from a grant that ADPH received. I don't think any radio club was involved in that grant, but someone else may know different.?

I have done some digging into the ADPH-funded station at Flowers and have reached a dead end.? The Director of Plant Operations at Flowers states that he looked around and could not find the radio equipment at all.? I'm not certain where the equipment went.? He stated that someone named Bill Woodham used to run the radio station and is now retired.? I don't know who this person is.? I don't see a Bill or William Woodham in the FCC ULS database in the state of Alabama.? I know a Bert Woodham, who owns the cabinet shop down the road from me.? I can contact him to see if Bill is of any relation, but it seems as if we have reached the end of the rope here.
?
It might be an option to request another grant to rebuild the station, but I am not certain that we would not wind up in the same situation some years down the road.? Perhaps we can think up alternative locations for another station.? There is a very big upside to having a station at Flowers as it is one of the central points of emergency-related activity in the county, not to mention the height of the building.? I don't know if the antennas are still in place there.? I told him that I'd reach out again soon to visit and inspect it myself.
?
Ken Hosey K4PDI stated that he would check the status of the local ADPH station to see if any equipment remains on site there.? The last word we had on that station is the antennas were damaged during roof construction.? The status of the radios is unknown until one of us finds out.? Ken, has there been any update on this one?
?
The Southeast Health station is in good working order, aside from the HF radio still being in the repair shop in Syracuse.? I analyzed both of the HF antennas and have full SWR graphs of each band on each antenna printed and present at the station's control point.? The VHF/UHF antennas, feedlines, and radio are all in great working order.? I have been activating that station once per month during our nets.? My next activation of that station is tomorrow night.
?
Does anyone have any insight or updates for the remaining stations?

after the net? , i also see that 5.43 memory channel was set plus offset !

The icom id5100 is complex. It behaves as if it was two xmtrs each sharing the same 2 memory banks; one with 1000 slots, the other quick access w/ just 4 slots. One or both xmtrs will do the icom digital.
The icom in the car is -old- and simpler.
