K5ZD on the move
6
I am in the process of moving from Uxbridge, MA to Belmont, OH. For someone with a multi-tower station, this is a real project. You can read about and see photos on my blog at https://k5zd.com/move-to-w8/ I owe a lot to BVARC members Martin AA1ON and Mark KW1X for providing ground crew support. Could not have done this without them! Randy K5ZD PS ¨C Really enjoyed the club meeting Monday evening. Nice to have a presentation along with the business meeting.

Antenna presentation at April 28th BVARC meeting
6
Here's a brief write up on Greg Mihran's presentation (attached). Many POTA enthusiasts describe the POTA PERformer as a game changer. What struck me about Greg's work is his attention to both antenna modeling and field measurement. For example many amateurs have been told that ground plane radials should be 1/4 wavelength long but by measuring the current flow on the radials he was able determine this is not optimal. Proximity to the ground detunes the radials lowering their resonant frequency so the point of maximum current is pulled away from the base of the vertical into the ground increasing losses. Another novel concept is measuring how counterpoise length can affect the resonance of an end fed half wave. Most of us have been told the outer shield of the coax can serve as the counterpoise and the length doesn't matter but that's not necessarily optimal. When I'm operating portable I want the most efficient antenna system I can transport and setup easily. Bring your antenna questions and enjoy! 73, Peter K1AV

BIG CORRECTION

UPDATE FOR UPCOMING CONSORTIUM
Side comment: Last evenings meeting was just the shot in the arm the club needed. Greg's presentation was very informative. Today there is very little that the average ham can do with new transceivers (as far as repairs) - the oportunity to build home brew antennas is still a wide open field for experiments. The business portion of the meeting lasted 8 minutes. A tip of the hat to President Ray - great job. Next subject- Last night several hams asked what the topic for the upcoming Consortium was going to be. Because we are closing in on Field Day and we plan to use the ICOM 7300 (at least three) I thought we could go over the settings and put a "hands on" (YOUR HANDS) demo. You might even be able to make a few contacts. You can apply what you learn at field day. Come join us-it will be fun. Hello BVARC, I will be operating portable from Aruba through April 9th and had a brief contact with K1ETA Tuesday evening. I'll be looking to make contact with the crew at the Bellingham library Saturday morning and activating Arikok National Park (AW-01) Sunday afternoon (on 15 and 20m CW). Feel free to email me if you want to schedule a QSO (psichel@...). I missed the club meeting Monday and would like to invite any who are interested to join the Field Day committee for the coming June event. I¡¯ll be hosting our first planning meeting via Zoom on Monday April 21st from 7-7:30pm. Update info on the DXFT8 transceiver article
Seeing this has started to take off as sn open source kit, a few more things have happened. First a new 3d printed case with closing lidto protect the touchscreen when not in use was added, and the latest Firmware is Version 1.9.3. And now for the big news, a new 7 band RF board is in the works with a internal Li-Ion battery pack from Amazon for approximately 2-3 hours of operation from full charge with LED gas gauge on the side of the board. Also there's a waiting list for WB2CBA's credit card sized QRPp antenna tuner, waiting for one of those kits to become available. 73 Matt NA1Q

Come early and take advantage of the dicussions that take place before the scheuled meeting. Follow up to K1RI Equipment Tests
This AM I have tested the following and found them to be in operable condition. Yaesu 2m FT-2500m Yaesu 2m FT 2500m and Kantronics Communicator 3 plus (Packet control) Kenwood TM 281A These items are now at my home QTH. Apparently the smoke had little on no effect on the gear. That gives me hope none of the other equipment has been damaged. I will attempt to assemble all the related items for the Elecraft K3 inclucing Amplifier, ATU, Directional coupler and speakers. On my previous message that was incomplete
I apologize for not completing the list of K1RI's radio equipment. I got an emegency phone call from Florida concerning my son. That took up the rest of the afternoon and evening. I will post the list as soon as I'm able to spend more time on it. 73 Jim K1GND

Radios for sale
4
By now everyone is aware of the tragic home fire that ended up taking K1RI Bob's life. His XYL Linda has asked me to arrange for the moving and sale of his radio equipment. The moving is complete and all items are now in storage. Because of the volume of the equipment involved, it is impossible to load all of it and move it to a ham fest type setup and subsequently re-loading what does not sell and transport it back to storage. Instead what I propose to do is offer any and all of the larger equipment as a single group with the idea of putting together a second and possibly third group as time goes by. In order to do this those hams interested in viewing and possibly purchasing I would ask that they contact me. The first group to be offered are the transceivers consistion of the following:

DX-FT8 7 band hF FT8 QRPp transceiver
3
Well I was looking into POTA this summer, and wanted a rather minimal setup. I know I like doing FT8 and was looking at my options, the IC-7300 with a tablet, laptop, or cellphone. Then I looked at yhe QRPLabs QDX and QMX transceivers, but I still would need the laptop, tablet or cellphone. Then I ran across WB2CBA and W5BAA's DXFT8 QRP transceiver. This is a you have to build it from components and program it with firmware. So you order the RF board kit from Kees Talen K5BCQ via a paypal payment of $45.00, the STM32f746 Discovery Board from Digikey, a Micro SD card 8GB or larger, a CR2032 button cell for the real time clock, and a Mini USB cable for programming. Once everything arrived, I spent 2 hours using a very slow laptop installing the firmware in the STM32 and setting up the MicroSd card info file. I then spent another 4 hours soldering and assembling the radio. And once hooked up I had transmit but no receive. So I did a couple quick tests listed in the Groups Io DXFT8 board and discovered U1 a SMD IC was only half installed, like it shifted in the solding process, so I slid it back so all 4 tabs made contact with the board and that solved the problem. So I hooked it up to the antenna and powered it up, and it was now receiving. Unfortunately it is a QRPp transceiver which max power out on 40m is only 840 mW, on 10m its around 520 mW. Not bad for running off a 5V 1a USB Cellphone charger. You can power it with a 9 yo 15v external power source but it's only going to give less than 1 watt of RF. Plus side is it will run off one of those cellphone USB battery packs and the radio is about 1-1/8" thick and the same size as my cellphone with 3 times the weight. Now just need to add a SMA antenna and I'll be all set for POTA this year. 73 Matt NA1Q
