Outgoing QSL Bureau
Just in case you didn't know this, as part of your club dues the club provides outgoing QSL service to the ARRL outgoing QSL Bureau for ARRL members. So how do you do this?
1) Check to see if the station worked does accept cards via Bureau. If yes, then fill out your outgoing QSL cards for DX starions. They do not accept domestic QSL cards, so here in the US just mail it to the othef US station. 2) Make sure that it clearly states the callsign of the receiving station.? 3) Sometimes a station uses a QSL manager, so write on the card somewhere the QSL Manager's Callsign for the folks at the bureau. They don't have time to track down a EA#/DL#XXX station and might? send the card to EA bureau instead of the DL Burea which is where the QSL Manager is. 4) include on a piece of paper write your callsign and ARRL membership number and expiration and include it with your cards. 5) at the next club meeting or consortium, bting the cards and hand them to Bob W1YRC. You can drop them off to him at his house, but contact him ahead of time to see if he us home first and to expect them. He collects as many as he can and mails or delivers them to the league when he has a bunch to go. The bureau charges by the pound for QSL card handling, not individual or card count. So sending 10 QSL cards or 100 qsl cards (about 1 lb) costs the same. So it's better to send in batches of cards as a group rather than a few at a time. And finally, wait for the W1 QSL bureau to receive cards from the DX stations for you.? Important note, the bureaus can take several months to a couple years for the cards to get tothe DX station and their cards to come back. The more you know. And big thank you to Bob W1YRC for collecting batches of cards yo send to the league. 73 Matt NA1Q? |

Re: Experimenting with FT8CN
Thanks for sharing about the FT8CN and digirig. ? I also like the idea of skipping the laptop for POTA. Recently I discovered the DigiPi which is a WiFi Hotspot that supports all digital modes including FT8, js8call, and WinLink using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W.? If you have a modern radio with a USB connector (IC-7300, 705, etc) you don’t even need a sound card (or digirig).? Just a short USB cable from the $15 Raspberry Pi Zero to the radio and the web browser on your phone, tablet, or PC. ? The pieces for my DigiPi arrived today and I made my first FT8 contact with it about an hour ago. ? I’m imagining we could setup a WinLink Radio Message Server near Scituate and use it to send WinLink Email for 200 bonus points during Field Day.? I expect to do more testing to confirm the details over the next few weeks. The 17 minute video linked below briefly introduces the DigiPi and how it can be used to send radio Email. Of course we could run WinLink Express on PC, but having a pre-configured pocket size appliance that lets you do everything from your phone and costs under $50 is kind of interesting.? It might eventually lead to a club project to make radio email coverage (and other digital modes) in our area more routine. 73 and enjoy!

Well I'm getting ready to do some POTA activations this month, I am not a CW guy due to hearing issues, but I do enjoy doing digital contacts via FT8 / FT4. Now I have done a few POTA activations with various radios, thr Icom IC-7300 and Yaesu FT-891, and my Elecraft KX2. And just about everyone is using WSJT-X, the standard program used by everyone. But I wanted to ditch the tablet or laptop, so I found this software program FT8CN by BG7YOZ. It works on Android phones, and using my Digirig I can hook my cellphone to the radio through the USB-C charging port of the phone, control the Elecraft KX2 and send / receive the audio through the soundcard of the Digirig. Only issue I found so far is downloading the logs. You need to go to a separate laptop or computer and connect to the IP address the phone is using for the app to download the log for uploading to Logbook of the World,? QRZ, and eQSL. |

Only other complaint is it is the help is written in Chinese, so it's sort of guessing game on how to do things at first. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to start sending CQ, and another 15 to figure out how to download the logs. But once you get it, it is a worthwhile tool to add to the hamshack arsenal. $10 per.kit. I will be there before the meeting at 6:30pm and after with the soldering station to demonstrate and if you want to have the IC soldered on via solderpaste and hot air I will be around to do that. |
Re: FIELD DAY MEETING
Yesterday we had a Field Day Committee meeting on Zoom to update any questions or concerns from the previous meeting on March 13th.? Everything from the March meeting is pretty much status quo with the exception of we will be having sandwiches and chips for lunch on Saturday afternoon.? Saturday evening dinner will be pot luck again.
We firmly decided on going 2A RI.? All the bonus points were discussed and we have a good handle on that.? I reached out to several people at last months in person club meeting in regards to bonus points and got commitments.? Set up for Friday and Saturday looks good as well but we could use a little more in person help. I will be sending out a sign up sheet for the pot luck dinner and operators soon.?? We will be having one more Zoom meeting a week to 10 days prior to Field Day to finalize everything.?? Thanks to everyone who attended last night. |
