Locked Very important act before Nov 28 23
I got this from a ARRL today! A few weeks ago, I sent out a request for members to comment to the FCC about proposed changes to the 60 meter band. Jim Boehner, N2ZZ, Roanoke Division Director and Bill Morine, N2COP, Roanoke Division Vice Director recently wrote a great request for action to members of their division about the proposed changes. Because the FCC has extended the deadline for comments to November 28, 2023 *from the original October 31) I thought it worthwhile to forward their message to the Midwest Division. Here is Jim and Bill’s request for support (with the corrected due date): *** We need your assistance, and we need it NOW. We strongly encourage you to assist the ARRL and the entire U.S. Amateur Radio community by submitting comments to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) before November 28, 2023, to save the privileges we have fought to gain on 60 meters. Even if you are not currently active on 60 meters, the proposed reduction in power from 100 watts to an equivalent of less than 10 watts is the most sweeping reduction of HF privileges in decades. If Amateur Radio opposition to this proposed change is weak and the FCC goes through with the change, will a lackluster response from the Amateur Radio community embolden the FCC to remove or modify more HF privileges? Please read this message in full to understand why your help is needed prior to submitting your comments. The FCC has issued Notice of Proposed Rulemaking’s (NPRM) Docket Number 23-120 which would reduce power on 60 meters from 100 watts ERP (Effective Radiated Power) to the equivalent of 9.5 watts ERP. The NPRM would replace the current five channels (currently each with a 100-watt power limit) with a 15 KHz continuous spectrum from 5351.5 to 5366.5 KHz, but limiting power to the equivalent of 9.5 watts ERP. ARRL is proposing to keep the current five channels AND add the docket’s proposed 15 KHz of continuous spectrum, all at a power level of 100 watts ERP. It’s important to note that in 2022 our neighbor, Canada, enacted ARRL’s position by keeping the five current channels AND adding the expanded 15 KHz of continuous spectrum, all at 100 watts. ARRL is advocating for the FCC to adopt the identical allocations and power limits which Canada put in place over a year ago. When the FCC authorized 60-meter access for Amateur Radio operators in July 2003, the Commission cited the positive propagation attributes for emergency communications. Over the past twenty years during hurricanes, Caribbean Amateur Radio stations used 60 meters to relay critical weather and situational reports to U.S. operators. Clearly, 9.5 watts ERP would be woefully inadequate to maintain communications for these purposes. In the May 2023 ARRL survey, members overwhelmingly pointed to Spectrum Defense as the #1 priority of the League. The Roanoke Division takes this priority seriously. For the maximum impact, the FCC needs to hear from ARRL members in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia to underscore the importance of 60 meters in our densely populated region on the eastern seaboard situated between active hurricane zones and our nation’s capital of Washington, DC. Having a consistent bandplan with Canada will also ensure harmonious communications throughout most of North America. PLEASE support the ARRL's filing in this matter. To learn more about the NPRM and its impact on our 60-meter privileges, please visit https://www.arrl.org/60-meter-band . On this webpage you will find the links to file comments with the FCC. Please don’t delay. A substantial response from the Ham community before the November 28 deadline is the only way to forestall the loss of our valued operating privileges. Please urge your fellow Hams to file comments as well. Protection of our Amateur Radio spectrum is our number one priority. 73 de Jim Boehner, N2ZZ Roanoke Division Director Bill Morine, N2COP Roanoke Division Vice Director * I

Locked W0VFW VHF repeater on ALLSTAR...on Blind Hams Network.. 4
Upon reaching home from the club meeting tonight, I was hearing "strange doings" on the repeater.. An almost dead carrier.. 3-5 seconds with a single "go Ahead" beep. If I keyed the repeater I got a double beep "go ahead" beep indicating the repeater was on the internet.. Single go ahead beep shoul dbe when we are in local area mode- not on Blind hams. Anyhow I went to AllStar Link | Node List | | | | AllStar Link | Node List Tim Sawyer WD6AWP - standing on the shoulders of giants Repeater Controller with VoIP linking for Ham Radio | | | and looked up the blind hams network.. We usually connect to node 50631X... X being 5 one of many portals based on our geographical location.Since we're in Wichita the closest is 5- Plano TX and it is not there.. Allstar is indicating it's off the "air" since 00:49 zulu 10/25 I also did this with my SHARI hot spot and found that when either the repeater or the hotspot was connected to 506315... we'd get the almost dead carrier burst for 3-5 seconds.. So it must be on the internet... We should connect to 506315 5 being Plano Texas. The Allstar node list shows active nodes 0- Freemont Ca.1- Newark, NJ2- Ottawa Ontario Canada 3-London, UK 4-Sidney NWT 5- NOT ACTIVE---- Down for some reason.. last ping 00:49 10/25 6- Test bench N2DYI7- Newark, NJ again. We are now connected to 0 - Fremont, Ca and I am not hearing the 3-5 second almost dead carrier with a single go ahead beep... I did hear a "static burst" on both my Shari and Freemont on the W0VFW repeater and it is 22 miles away from my QTH.. I did put my Shari on 1 Newark and the W0VFW repeater on 0 Fremont CA and I heard the static buzz 1 second long with a single courtesy tone.. So something in the Blind Hams network is not perfect.. I am going to send a copy of this post to Patrick, N2DYI to see if he can fill me in... I'm glad it isn't us... But I'm not sure. Pat N2DYI knows he can shut us down if were the problem. Locked Tuesday Meeting And More 3
Hello VFW Ham Family This Tuesday at 7pm at the post we will hold our October meeting. Please attend as lots of important decisions need to be made. I share the September minutes along with a few highlights of what we need to do. Highlights 1. This meeting we will nominate officers for the 2024 year of service. Please consider who you would like to nominate for president, Vice President, treasurer and perhaps board members if desired. We need good leadership for the benefit of the club. Radio Shack Derby will officially be closing December 16th. We want to honor Mark and Carl with a retirement party. Christmas means the Angel tree activity again and we need to plan how to get things done. As a member of the Post 3115 Amateur Radio Club your help is most appreciated. Please come to the meeting prepared to get involved. Also please watch your inbox for the agenda from our president. Blessings Patricia Hawkins, Secretary

Locked REPEATER status change. 2
As of 11:30am Local 10/16 I disconnected Blind Hams because VE3RWJ commented on a "long Static Crash" and I inquired . He and another commented they were putting up with it on Blind Hams for 3 days.. We've had high winds for 3 days.. Right now I have ZERO wind in Mulvane. and the repeater is quiet.. Now it's quiet for the last 1/2 hour. I am also now monitoring Blind Hams on my HOTSPOT.. to make sure we were the one causing it as I polled connections and there were about 45 users connected. We are now standing alone. If the sun has burned off the frost we will not know if It's us till tomorrow about 9am.. but it was making noise till 11:30 this morning. We have PL on the repeater, so any carrier has to have the same PL in order to get into our machine. Our transmitter transmits a DPL tone so it cannot mix and produce a PL tone for the receiver.. I may try to get up to the post at 3pm today.. to check connections on coax cables, etc.. Tomorrow-Wednesday I will be busy.. Larry W8LM

Locked This is the END, Beautiful friend. This is the END; My only friend, the END. 3
Taking words from the 1960's group and The Doors Album..... Drove past Derby Radio Shack.. There is a FOR SALE Sign on the Radio Shack sign at the street. So I swung in and tried to trade tonight's lotto ticket for the store.. NO DICE... I did get the skinny--- Radio Shack Derby is closing DECEMBER 16th.. A Saturday... The Building is for sale, Shawn and Mark are retiring!!! Now for the purpose of this posting- I think we- W0VFW Amateur Radio Group should give then a send off.. A "retirement party" either at the store or at the VFW... Mark, when I was President, was Awarded W0VFW Ham of the Year. He used to provide Radio Shack Gift Cards for a meeting raffle every month.. Especially with the $25 hand helds on Amazon,, and dollar store batteries, and every store selling phone cigarette lighter adapters, and USB cables. Time to retire Radio Shack- one of the last stores alive.. Mark has been in the business all his life. His father was district manager.. So--- DECEMBER 16th is the 3rd Saturday...isn't that next our lunch day???? What better way to combine them- a fund raiser with a retirement party for Shawn and Mark.. Even hot dogs- chili dogs, sloppy joes, mac & cheese... cake and cookies.. type thing.. Or do we take Donuts to the store that Saturday morning?? The board needs to address this and present something at the next meeting. Perhaps -- food 1/2 price with W0VFW membership.. After all 8 dogs and 8 buns is like $2.50 even with inflation..that 32 cents our cost plus condiments and a paper plate. Invite the entire ham radio community. WE better get this advertised by NOV 1st.. Now the VFW people won't join the ham club but other hams coming to Shawn and Marks retirement will .. Larry W8LM ARRL Life Member- Licensed 57 years.

Locked REPEATER-
We've been getting some carrier with what sounds noise on the repeater.. it is followed by a single beep- indicating it is local.. double beep is a real signal and going into the ALLSTAR system. I am not hearing anything on the input here in Mulvane, I am 17 air miles from the repeater. Since the last 3-4 days were quite windy, I don't know if it is RFI from a EVERGY pole or HV line. .. or since it seems to last sometimes for 10 seconds or more, and is something else. At the time of this writing , in Mulvane my WX station says ZERO wind.. Yet is is continuing. I almost wonder if it is intentional, as if someone can generate the signal, then tires after a few hours. Sometimes it is ovbiously a week signal, other times quite strong. If someone is close to the VFW than my 17 miles and when it's active switch to the repeater input. 144.67 and see if it can be heard nearby. or at all... I am starting insulating and sheet rocking my addition this week and it's a 2 man job. So I really can't just take off 22 miles to the VFW - besides the VFW doesn't open to 3pm. Like with everything else Delays continue to plague me. My truck has been in the shop since August 5th. We finally have the right bumper tenatively arriving Tuesday.. Today I have to go with my contractor to Menards on Maise with my trailer to get 248 sticks of Harty board, and sheet rock. Lowes in derby does not have selection or prices found on the other side of town. That makes every trip a 2-3 hour venture. I do have a direction finding antenna but not the time, a it's intermittent. If anyone hears something on the input let me know...Last year it seemed to be dew-frost on the antenna.. fiberglass antennas are known for that. I believe those antennas are 10 years old now. they were epoxied when assembled to insure moisture proof ability.

Locked POTA Cheney Lake K-9116
All, This coming Saturday the 7th we will be conducting a POTA event at the Cheney Lake Marina where the last W0VFW POTA event was held. It appears that we have sufficient radios/antennas/etc. What we need are operators and loggers to make this a successful event for the club. Several members of the club have said that due to previous commitments they will be unable to attend or will be late in attending and I understand but, if you can make it, even for a short time it would be much appreciated. To avoid the overabundance of food that we had at the last POTA event I would recommend that each person bring burgers/hotdogs and a side dish/salad for themselves. If you wish to share, then, by all means, feel free to do so. Contact Micheal Moore, KF0BFU, for details. We've worked hard over the past year to get where we currently are, and it couldn't have been done it without each and everyone of you. This past year was one of reconstruction and we've made significant inroads with the leadership and members of Post 3115. Let's make this coming year one of growth and fun so that we may continue to support and serve our Veterans, our Post, and the VFW. Respectfully, Gaylen W. Klein, USN(Ret) President, W0VFW ARC

Locked ARRL dropping printed QST for members--- However.. 2
Life members such as myself have been getting QST in printed form since becoming Life members. The ARRL Board of directors are dropping it .. EXCEPT life members of over 10 years ago were to get QST mailed as part of the Life Membership deal.. They now are opting life members out if they DO NOT elect to have printed QST's delivered and members have 30 days to respond. The email offing the opt out, came 6 days into the 30 day window. I opted to keep receiving the printed QST.. Because of that... Once I thumb through them, I'll bring them to the VFW amateur Radio Club radio room. Anyone that wants to read one, or take it can do so.. I currently have 3-4 months of QST's.. I usually took them to hamfests, but I think W0VFW club members are more deserving than me selling them for 25 cents at a side walk sale. Larry W8LM ARRL Life Member- Licensed 57 years.
