ALLSTAR 101 podcast via our W?VFW/R VHF favorite users.
Hi folks. If you know anyone who is curious about Allstar, send them this! Myself, VE3RWJ, and Patrick Purdue, KE4DYI, both white caners, contributed a podcast episode to the CQ Blind Hams Podcast recently. The episode is entitled Allstar 101. It's a brief introduction to what Allstar is, how it works in general terms, a few short demos, and it's under half an hour in length. If you listen to podcasts simply look for "CQ blind Hams" in your podcast app of choice. Alternatively, if you aren't a podcast listener or still own a flip phone, here's a link to the audio of this particular episode on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5iI96NaTPU I participated in the conversation and contributed the show notes. Patrick did the amazing audio production.. 73, Chris de VE3RWJ

NPRM filing Instructions - Proposed application fees for Radio Amateurs
2
Comments are being accepted on the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in MD Docket 20-270, which proposes application fees for radio amateurs. Formal deadlines for comments and reply comments will be determined once the NPRM appears in the Federal Register. Comments may be filed now, however, by using the FCC's Electronic Comment Filing System ( <https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings> ECFS), posting to MD Docket No. 20-270. The docket is already open for accepting comments, even though deadlines have not yet been set. Here is the link to file your comments (copy and paste in your browser): https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/express * In the first box type, "20-270", then select the "Amendment of the Schedule of Application Fees...." * Then fill out the remainder and submit. It won't immediately show up, it has to be reviewed first..mine showed up this morning. Here are the comments WB4OMM submitted an an example: "I strenuously implore the FCC to drop this fee initiative for Amateur Radio License Applications and Renewals. Amateur Radio Operators provide VOLUNTARY COMMUNITY SERVICES. VOLUNTEER Examiners, SKYWARN, ARES, RACES, and CERT are all VOLUNTARY groups and services. Even the title, "AMATEUR" denotes VOLUNTEER service (non-paid). I see this fee as a huge barrier to youth (Boy and Girl Scouts, High School, Elementary Students) at a minimum; I see it as a, "slap in the face" to folks who provide volunteer community services. If you need funding, raise the fees of the commercial license holders who profit from the license. Thank you for the opportunity to provide comments." If you provide comments, make them your own...there are over 300 comments on the site against this NPRM as of today, but obviously the more the better. No nastiness, "just say no!".

Route 66 On The Air
View this email in your browser Route 66 On The Air is a great way to celebrate the "The Mother Road" on the airwaves. There are two ways to participate in this event. You can stay at your home station and work as many W6? stations as you can. These stations are operating from on or near Rt 66. This event runs from September 12 through 20 and all of the information can be found on the Route 66 On The Air website. Or, you can work as the Oklahoma City (W6K) station and make connections around the world from Rt. 66. OKC has always been well represented and they'd love your help. The following are the instructions from Thomas Webb WA9AFM/5 on getting set up as a W6K operator. 73 Just under one week to go before Route 66 On The Air begins!!! Once again, we'll celebrate the legend and lore of Route 66, "The Mother Road". Oklahoma City will again use the special event call sign W6K; Steve Duskin, NE5SD is the trustee for the call sign. Use of W6K must be authorized by the trustee through the R66OTA Registration Page. All W6K operations should be conducted in the Oklahoma City Metro area including Norman, and in the spirit of the event, as close to Route 66 as practical. Operations from Oklahoma City area landmarks associated with Route 66 are encouraged, i.e. Cowboy Hall of Fame, the 'round barn' in Arcadia, the Route 66 Bridges west of Bethany, etc. Mobile operations along Route 66 are also encouraged. Formal coordination with the Oklahoma History Center and the Museum of Western Heritage/Cowboy Hall of Fame has been completed. Mobile units may operate from the parking lots at both locations during their operating hours. For the Oklahoma History Center, Monday-Saturday, 10 AM. to 5 PM. For the Cowboy Hall of Fame, Monday-Saturday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM; Sunday, 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Please note: permission has been granted only for exterior operations only, NO permission has been granted for operations inside these locations. For R66OTA contacts in the Oklahoma City area, the 146.82MHz and 147.135MHz repeaters have been designated 'R66OTA repeaters'. Stations may reserve '2m FM' operating slots and use W6K on these repeaters. R66OTA began at 0000Z/7 September and continues to 2359Z/15 September. Radio operators may use phone, CW, or digital. Radio operators may also consider operating mobile on "The Mother Road". QSL information is provided in the registration instructions. To sign up as a R66OTA Radio Operator for Oklahoma City, contact Dave Downing, WD5G (davedown@...), Duane Angles, AA5KD (dangles1@...), Steve Duskin, NE5SD (ne5sd.steve@...) or Tom Webb, WA9AFM/5 (wa9afm@...). You will be assigned a username (your call sign) and password to access the R66OTA Registration Page. Besides your name and call sign, please provide a phone and email point of contact in case we need to get in touch with you. Operating slot reservation instructions will be sent to you after you have been registered as a R66OTA radio operator. You can 'reserve' two-hour operating slots by day/time/band/mode. Sign up for as many slots as you can operate. If you sign up to operate, please honor your commitment and operate for the time slots for which you register. What's on ALLSTAR besides the Blind Ham Net?
W?VFW/ R on 145.27 has been connected to The Blind Hams Hub 24x7. There are other groups, and they my interest you. If you're interested in a hot spot, figure about $150 if you build your own all new- less if you scrounge. $180 to300 all ready built and tested. W?VFW/R 145.27 Repeater- operating Information..

THIS IS NOT TO BE TALKED ABOUT ON THE AIR..... It has come to my attention that late night the BLIND HAMS TALK GROUP is being jammed. This is what we know: #1. The jammer is accessing the group via DMR. #2. The jammer is changing his radio's DMR address. #3. The jammer is operating late at night. Since our VHF repeater is connected 24x7 to the Blind Hams Group and we wish to continue at this time; we are not going to disconnect. Except or unless we create the issue. During nets, our repeater squelch tail will continue with a digital signal then drop. Only during Nets, it is coming from a digital HT on our input. I have never heard it on the input at my location but have hear it on the input at the repeater, ONLY during Nets. How I wished the repeater has a signal strength meter. I only heard it once on Patricia's net last week. The BLIND HAMS group is not interested in our little "burps" but instead this above mentioned jammer.. So as of today, the Blind Hams group is turning off DMR access in the evenings, as this is when the jammer comes out to play. THEY ARE NOT ANNOUNCING THIS !! So If anyone tries to access us via DMR 10PM to 4AM nightly it will be a NO GO.. ALLSTAR will work as it should and be available 24x7. They are also working on better authentication of DMR access on their end. Again THIS IS NOT TO BE TALKED ABOUT ON THE AIR.....

Joe, I have taken the liberty to send your message along to the rest of the club, as I alone do not make this possible. Regarding installation of an antenna on your truck. I am great a making holes. I once waited till I had 7 miles on my truck then drilled the hole in the middle of the roof for the antenna. I do have the hole punch for NMO mounts. We can talk via email, as there are many options can be had and likewise price. Congratulations on returning to the hobby. Larry W8LM "You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: You send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat. " - Albert Einstein, explaining radio

NO CODE is spelt KNOW CODE
I received this email from a "back east" ham club member. It might spur a bit of interest. Like Pete, I started in 1966 as WN8TBV, in Michigan. He has 10 years on me. It is surprising just how many hams run CW only and especially overseas run QRP with less than $150 invested in their entire station.-de W8LM From July 1-7 I was one of the ops signing K2D representing Connecticut in the annual 13 colonies event. After the dust settled, I had worked more than 2300 CW contacts and was exposed to an incredible breadth of CW skills. It was clear to me that while there are a lot of guys and gals operating CW, there are a good number who could improve their skills. To that end, I asked one of our members who is a skilled coder if they could write a script to extract email addresses from QRZ given the call. Out of the 2300 contacts, we got a list of 1600+ email addresses. I then created an account with one of the broadcast emailers and sent out this: I'm Pete, W1RM and you worked me on CW as K2D in the recent 13 Colonies event. Thanks for the QSO. During the 2,000+ QSOs I made, I observed a wide range of CW skills. For those of you who would like to improve your CW proficiency, both sending and receiving, I recommend you look at enrolling in the CW Academy (CWA), sponsored by CWops. CWA is open to any and all and is a service provided by members of CWops at absolutely no charge or obligation other than a desire to learn and improve your CW receiving and sending. CWA has beginner-to-25 wpm classes that are run classroom style online. Check it out at https://cwops.org/cw-academy/cw-academy-options. If you are a proficient CW operator, please pass this email on to anyone you know who wants to learn or get better with CW. By way of background, I've been a CW operator since 1956 when I started as KN2UTV in New York. I am a founding member of CWops (my number is 8) and its first president. CW forever! 73, Pete, W1RM CWops Past President

(9AM Central) Where: the Blind Hams bridge, reachable via any of the following: W?VFW repeater 145.27 PL103.5 Allstar: node 50631 DMR: Branmeister and TGIF TG 31679 D-Star: DCS679A Peanut: XLS679A (Turns an Android Smart phone into a DMR-Dstar HT -ask W8LM for info) Echolink: 461941 YSF: 76138 (Yaesu System Fusion) The net controllers have already picked a number between 1 and the current check-in record. No, silly, we are not telling you what it is. At the end of the net, we will announce which check-in was that number, and that lucky person wins a Radioddity GD77. If you are the winner and already have a GD77, if you don't need one, please have the courtesy to pass the win on to someone else and ask that another number be drawn. We will continue drawing until we have a winner. Once chosen, the winner will need to provide their name and address to Chris Smart, VE3RWJ, so it can be forwarded along to someone at Radioddity and the radio can be shipped to them. W8LM Note- GD77 is a DMR/analog radio. witha 2.8" color display. The demand for this radio has increased with hams re-writing the firmware, so the radio speaks and can be operated by sightless amateurs. This makes it especially desirable as you do not have to look at the display especially when driving.

Raspberry Pi (RPI) and Ham radio
4
Many do not know that I was into low cost computers and ham radio. In the1980's I developed a Morse code send receive program for the COMMODORE VIC-20 and sold it worldwide in 73 magazine, as Peripheral Products. Worked very well and even received a letter from a coast guard station in Florida they were using it on military frequencies. Even had an offer to license it in Europe.. I think for everyone I sold, 5 were copied. Anyhow fast forward to the last 5 years and the RASPBERRY PI (RPI) series of computers from England. A week ago they introduced a new more powerful one with 8GM of RAM memory. Got an email from NEWARK -USA (https://www.newark.com) this morning. #1 the new 8Gb RPI 4 is $75 #2 shipping 2 lb. or less is flat $7.95 #3. 4,614 more will be available on 7/16/20 #4..They are no longer optioning a 1Gb RPI4. (Adafruit has them) #5. A 2Gb RPI4 is $35 (price drop) 4GB RPI4 $55 As a side note, I was at Micro Center (KC) while out of town Saturday and they had new in box widescreen HDMI monitors for $69. I also picked up a few RPI3B's for $29 for ham radio work and a PI ZERO W for $10. The 400 mile R/T was worth it as I had other business nearby. Ham operators use RPI's for many many things. I use RPI2's, 3's and 3+'s for ALLSTAR and MMDVM (ways to connect Ham radio's to the internet) as well as weak signal decoding for moon bounce. If you are interested in Raspberry Pi's, Linux and Ham radio we can get together perhaps even get a group going like Harold did..Both the W?VFW repeaters are running on Raspberry Pi 2s. There are over 3 million RPI's in use today.. email me if interested. am_fm_radio (at) yahoo.com
