Locked Raspberry Pi (RPI) and Ham radio

Many do not know that? I was into low cost computers and ham radio. In the1980's I developed a Morse code send receive program for the COMMODORE VIC-20 and sold it worldwide in 73 magazine, as Peripheral Products. Worked very well and even received a letter from a coast guard station in Florida they were using it on military frequencies. Even had an offer to license it in Europe..? I think for everyone I sold, 5 were copied.

Anyhow fast forward to the last 5 years and the RASPBERRY PI (RPI) series of computers from England. A week ago they introduced a new more powerful one with 8GM of RAM memory.
Got an email from NEWARK -USA () this morning.
#1 the new 8Gb RPI 4 is $75
#2 shipping 2 lb. or less is flat $7.95
#3. 4,614 more will be available on 7/16/20
#4..They are no longer? optioning a 1Gb RPI4. (Adafruit has them)
#5. A 2Gb RPI4 is $35 (price drop)? 4GB RPI4 $55

As a side note, I was at Micro Center (KC) while out of town Saturday and they had new in box widescreen HDMI monitors for $69. I also picked up a few RPI3B's for $29 for ham radio work and a PI ZERO W for $10. The 400 mile R/T was worth it as I had other business nearby. Ham operators use RPI's for many many things. I use RPI2's, 3's and 3+'s for ALLSTAR? and MMDVM (ways to connect Ham radio's to the internet) as well as weak signal decoding for moon bounce.

If you are interested in Raspberry Pi's, Linux and Ham radio we can get together perhaps even get a group going like Harold did..Both the W?VFW repeaters are running on Raspberry Pi 2s. There are over 3 million RPI's in use today.. email me if interested. am_fm_radio (at) yahoo.com

The ever increasing popularity of the Raspberry PI in ham radio continues. I have one running W3DJS's Ham radio V2.0 SD card. It tracks the ISS for me, as I'm trying to make a contact.. He has announced a bigger, bolder, better version he will be releasing hopefully by this weekend.? Here is a "sales brochure" -- it's FREE BTW...
Big Picture:
? ? Renamed project to HamPi and added branding (wallpaper, hostname, etc.)
? ? Converted manually-created (handmade) image creation to Ansible-created (automated) image creation
? ? Set up ~95% of software projects to automagically download latest version from Internet during build
? ? Add installation of x86 apps (versus ARM apps) in some cases for use with Raspbian x86
? ? Automatic upgrade of Raspbian packages and cleaning apt cache

Added:
? ? Add support for Northwest Digital Radio DRAWS? Pi HAT
? ? Initial Chromium Bookmarks for Ham Radio
? ? Pybombs for GNU Radio?
? ? AirSpy Driver?
? ? AirSpy HF Driver?
? ? SoapySDR Driver for AirSpy?
? ? SoapySDR Driver for FUNcube dongle pro+?
? ? SoapySDR Driver for PlutoSDR?
? ? SoapySDR Driver for OsmoSDR?
? ? SoapySDR Driver for Red Pitaya?
? ? SoapySDR Driver for UHD (Ettus Research)?
? ? SoapySDR Driver for VOLK-based type converters?
? ? AMBEServer?
? ? PatMenu 2.0?2
? ? wwl - (dpkg) Calculates distance and azimuth between two Maidenhead locators
? ? wspr?
? ? QSLware nag dialog
? ? Configuration of image to use 64-bit kernel

Replaced:

? ? APRS Message App for JS8Call with JS8CallUtilities_V2
? ? D-Rats 0.3.3 with D-Rats 0.3.9 (or later)?
? ? Removed WiFi Auto Hotspot which caused so many issues previously
? ? Disabled automatic gpsd connection to USB which caused issues
?
Updates:
? ? Includes WSJT-X 2.2.1 (latest build as of June 2020)
? ? Updates HamLib from 3.3 to 4.0
? ? Updates FLDigi Suite
? ? Installs and compiles ax.25 from source
? ? Installs and compiles linpac from source
? ? Updates Pat Menu from 1.0 to 2.0
? ? Adds support to Ansible for slimmer versions of Raspberry Pi OS (formerly known as Raspbian)
? ? Resize (micro)SD card automatically
? ? Changes compression format of image from BZip2 to XZ for sizable savings and faster downloads
? ? Adds HamPi README and LICENSE to Desktop
? ? Add DRAWS? HAT documentation to Desktop
? ? Fixes miscellaneous small bugs
?
Keep your eyes open next weekend here for the release announcement.

Ham PI V1.0 by W3DJS was released today... I am currently downloading it using uTORRENT. ETA for download is 5 hours 21 minutes.. There is going to be quite a rush to get this software. If you'd like a copy, contact me and we'll get together and burn an image on at least a 16Gb microSD card.

Hams are finding the Raspberry PI platform more than adequate for many Ham Radio applications. They are not only inexpensive but energy efficient.? Something to consider when planning a go-box, portable or emergency operations.

Anyone that wishes to experiment with me in this regard, or ALLSTAR or Repeaters please contact me.

Finally, 6 meters has been open these past few evenings I have worked 40-50 grid squares, 4 provinces in Canada, 2 call areas in Mexico and Cuba.
I hear the west coast calling Japan, and the east coast calling Europe, but I have not worked either. Last year I did, and even more. On 6 meters I am running 75-100 watts into a 5 element homebrew OWA beam at 35 feet.
