Coil Winding
Hello Ham Family
Gaylen came over and we began my radio receiver project. Actually tried sending this earlier, however, having internet issues. Anyway this is my very first time winding wire and thus making the coil for my AM receiver. Way cool. President Gaylen says I did well. I share this picture for your enjoyment. Thanks President Gaylen for teaching me. Good Elmers are hard to find. Anyone else want to try this? 73 Pat, KE0TGA |

Greater Wichita Field Day Meeting. Notes
Greetings VFW Hams
Last evening President Gaylen, his lovely wife Jenny and I attended the Greater Wichita Field Day planning event meeting. As stated before I made no commitment on behalf of the club, however, I did gather information so that we can in the near future make a more informed choice about what we want to do. Below I share what we learned. First the group decided to host this event at a park in Park City. The event can be hosted there for free according to the park. I guess they appreciate the publicity. Since part of the goal of this event is to appeal to the public and perhaps get them interested this is a good location. We would be near the ball diamonds and thus people would see our antennas and get curious. Publicity is a good thing if we want new folks to get involved in ham radio. Next we talked at length about promotion. I suggested an interview on the live program channel 5 has, as I was thinking of Tracie. Weather broadcasters perhaps could be contacted to see if they might want to come on out and be at the event. Social media posting could be done by all involved. This event is more than the points for making contacts. It promotes ham radio to our community and thus promoting our event will only help the clubs involved. Leadership has decided we can do four modes: CW, SSB, digital and a GOTA station. A captain of each mode is needed to keep things organized. Things to be worked out include food, a welcome station, perhaps safety or security. The next planning session will be in April. A Groups.IO has been set up for those planning this and I have been added to that list. This will insure that VFW radio club knows what is going on. Thus should we want to be involved we will know what is needed and how we could help. Respectfully Submitted Patricia Hawkins VFW-ARC |

That is interesting Michael because I get notices via email from that group of folks. That is how I knew about tonight¡¯s meeting. I will report on tonight¡¯s meeting some time tomorrow as I am tired, but it was a productive meeting. Gaylen, his wife and I attended.

I went to the first meeting with Ken Davis and Coy Terry. We signed the sign up sheet representing the W0VFW club. We added our contact information and phone numbers without emails. I personally did not receive any information for the leaders of the group. KF0BFU.

Field Day Please Read
Greetings VFW Hams
Tonight I am planning to attend an open meeting where planning s being done for Field Day 2023. That in no way commits the club to participate. Rather I am attending as your representative in order to learn what is being planned so that we can make an educated decision as a club as to whether to join with this larger group or simply do something on our own. I will be taking notes and report said notes back to you the members. Tonight¡¯s meeting is being lead by Dave from WARC. They want to make Field Day a community thing and not just a gather contacts thing. They have invited all of the clubs nearby. That means although this is being organized by a team from WARC it would end up being a larger deal than that. More details will be shared once I have heard what is being planned. As we have not voted on this matter I am only representing us in order to learn how we could be involved should we desire to do so. Thus I will share what I learn so that as members we can make an informed choice. Basically as a club we have three choices as follows: 1. Field Day participation with a large community event 2. Field Day participation as a club by ourselves 3. Skip Field Day this year Just wanted to keep you informed about what is going on in the background. Please stay tuned and keep an open mind until we actually know what is being planned. Patricia, KE0TGA |

Re: Equipment Custodian Query Regarding 2023 ARRL Flied Days operation.
We could use a room at the TV station as its smoke free. I have a 4500w portable generator. I have a propane grill here at the station. The 50 ft tower has not been erected yet but that is a possibility. I will committee getting food together as well. I also have a Kenwood TS2000 with desk mic. And I have a gigibit internet set up now.

Re: Storm Spotter Training
Years ago W0VFW members attended storm spotting as I have numerous times. Nothing has changed and some say a refresher is a good thing, but my opinion is after 50 years of driving and not 1 at fault accident, I don't need to go to drivers education again. My record is not stellar, yet not dismal.
Those who will attend will find that NWS no longer depends on Amateur Radio reporting but Cell phones, SMS messaging and any Tom, Dick and Harry, making reports. Last I checked NWS ICT has only 3 phone lines. Amateur radio was another line into the storm desk. I do not think they even turn on the Amateur Radio let alone man it. Prior to Randy, W0LD leaving town, it was manned at every event as BEARS was very active and I was a member of that group as well. . The Sedgwick County Emergency Management people who are Amateur Radio Operators and run a net independent of NWS, I believe they meet Tuesday nights which conflicts with W0VFW ARC club meetings. Some of our former members have opted to serve the community by participating there instead. The net they run, they will admonish you if you check in even if you have a tornado on the ground at your location, as your are not on their active roster. They also do not allow participation, unlike elsewhere, by Amateur Radio Operators that are under 18 years of age. I experienced this with my son who had been trained and participated 3 years in another state. I wish everyone well, with respect to becoming Skywarn trained but I have other interests, and have participated in 8 other states for 40 or more years. |
