That's bizarre! Have you spoken with Mark or Shawn about it? I was just down there about an hour ago and ran into Gaylen.

K-link status on W?VFW UHF repeater.
All current information is found at the link below.
K-link is "dead" according to the powers that may be. The new system I believe is going the direction of DMR. |

Re: Just got the 2023 repeater book and we are not in it
THE ARRL relies on a pay subscription service as a database to their book publishing. They only update the book once a year. and therefore outdated the day it is available for sale. They live in the 19 or 20th century..
here is the complete skinny: ARRL Repeater Directory Corrections and Additions Since 2017, the listings included in The Repeater Directory have been supplied by RFinder. RFinder offers an online subscription service to its worldwide repeater database (sold separately). ARRL does not curate the listings included in the Repeater Directory. We encourage frequency coordinators and repeater owners to review listings published in the annual Repeater Directory, and to submit corrections directly to RFinder. RFinder subscribers can search for, and request updates, to repeater listings there. You can submit a request to add a repeater to the RFinder database Repeaterbook.com is updated daily and is free. It allows various database searches and any web browser can connect. THe ARRL just announced an ARRL repeater app for a fee and only for android phones.. |

CLUB EQUIPMENT CUSTODIAN W?VFW - FIELD DAYS PREPARATION.
#1. Field days is only 95days away.
#2. Previous years W0VFW has operated: a. From 6000 feet on a mountain in Colorado. b. From Veterans point at El Dorado Lake State Park c. From VFW Post 3115 Amateur Radio room. d. Not operated because of: 1. Covid and the post was ordered closed 2. Extreme high electrical line noise cause by bad Westar equipment surrounding VFW post 3115. #3. Now is the time to decide if W0VFW will be active for field days. a. At VFW post 3115 1. Requires coax replacement on the tower. If operating class D or E. 2. Arrangements for emergency power (I have a new 2200Watt Westinghouse Generator) 3. We could erect temp antennas, use emergency power and operate class A.from the Patio @VFW 3115. A. Class A allows a GOTA station if Class 2A or higher. 4. Use the antennas and radio room and operate class D (AC power) or Class E (emergency power) b. At another location 1. W0VFW has 2 portable antennas in inventory A. G5RV jr. (40-10 meters) B. G5RV (80-10 meters) 2. W0VFW has 2 transmitters ICOM 718 HF with speech and Yaesu 2 meter rig. 3. W0VFW has an LDG auto Antenna Tuner. #4. Additional planning is required. a. Amateur Radio Equipment checked our -repaired if necessary. b. Field Day Logging programs updated (W0VFW owns - I have the passwords) New Rules 2023 Field Days Rules are here: |

Re: Just got the 2023 repeater book and we are not in it
I see both repeaters (2m and 70cm) in the most current versions of the RepeaterBook apps for both iOS and Andriod. That said, there is an error that has been there for over a year now. The 2m VFW repeater still shows that it is Echolink capable (this is no longer true and the entry should be updated).

That sounds strange as it does come up in the repeater book app on my phone. Perhaps a mistake was made in the printing of the book? Not sure how to get it fixed, but I guess we need to try and figure it out. The repeater is there and it works, so not sure what is up with that. 73 Pat On Mar 15, 2023, at 10:40 AM, Mike Holmes <aerospaced@...> wrote: |

Re: Wound My First Coil
Excellent- sounds like my 1st radio a crystal set. It required high impedance headphones- or a crystal earphone.. just like the crystals hams used to use to determine frequencies of their transmitter. It used the electro-mechanical properties of quartz. if you apply a slight voltage to a quartz crystal, it vibrates. if you keep changing the electrical stimulation it converts the electrical signal to audio vibrations. But with DC it starts vibrating at a specific frequency.
My 1st radio was a design found in the boy scout Radio merit badge.. I built it in a cigar box. - you could get empty cigar boxes at the drug store if you begged long enough or took the trash to the dumpster for them. A cigar box was a cherished posession. It could contain, baseball cards, toy soldiers, marbles or jax. Sometimes even a few coins and hard candy. My 1 tube radio was actually a dual triode..6SN7 and one of the 1st stations I heard was CKLW in Canada.. Little did I know at age 12. CKLW 800Khz. was a clear channel 100,000 watt radio with a 5/8 antenna along side of the Detroit river actually about 5 air miles away in Canada.... CKLW back then ran twice the power of any US station and had twice the antenna. It covered 43 states at night and better than 1/2 of Canada to the Arctic circle. The other station I would listen to was WCAR... It broadcasted the Detroit Tigers Baseball. WCAR was limited to 1000 watts at night and had a 12 antenna array pointed north to provide Michiganders who would escape Detroit in the summer and head to cooler northern Michigan. You could hear WCAR 500 miles north but not 20 miles south at night. The station engineer of WCAR gave me my novice test back in 1966...Blame him... Larry W8LM |

This will be an AM receiver. I actually want it as an emergency radio because it does not require a power supply or batteries. It receives power via the 2 meter antenna. Yes it requires headphones in order to hear the stations, but at least it does not require batteries or a power supply. Thus I felt it to be the perfect way to get information should we lose power for longer than an hour or so. 73 Pat, KE0TGA On Mar 12, 2023, at 8:34 AM, Larry Macionski via groups.io <am_fm_radio@...> wrote: |

Re: Wound My First Coil
Next you'll be climbing my tower. very nicely done. Old School, but I can't remember the advantage of winding that in that fashion..
I think the first guys that wound them got the idea from their mothers who wound wool yarn on the coil form to make hot pads. in the pioneering days of radio, wood stoves and iron skillets were the cook ware of the times.. and counters and kitchen tables were not Formica or granite like they are now. Are you going to make a broadcast band radio receiver or something else... maybe a metal detector... err bomb detector as they called it in WWII.. prior to inventing a bomb detector they would release a herd of goats into the field... So that means that metal/bomb detectors are PETA approved... Funny when you think about it. Larry W8LM |
