Winlink users - watch HF Winlink connections in real time!
3
#Winlink
The Winlink team just released this HF connection viewer that plots Winlink connections on a zoomable map. No radio needed. It watches HF traffic via the Winlink server over the Internet. Once running the stations begin appearing on the map with a line between them. A click on either station shows info on the two stations. Downright interesting to watch as they pop in. You must have a free Winlink account to be able to use the Connection Monitor, but having an account is a good idea anyway. Even if you don't have the ability to do Winlink by radio you can always use it's Telenet (your Internet) connection to send and receive emails. Knowing how to use the program is half the battle in case of emergencies. We can teach you to do it with radio when the time comes. A couple of useful applications for your Meshtastic network
3
#Meshtastic
#projects
Besides texting there are a number of other things you can do with those little Meshtastic devices. There are two named modules (think configuration) that can come in quite handy. The first is the Detection Module. It has a small menu that lets you pick a unused I/O pin on the mesh radio to monitor. It also has weak pull up available to make a 1 wire to ground circuit. This can be sensed as open or closed with a series switch. In my application I have a magnetic reed switch door sensor in series that will trigger an alert text that will be sent over the network all or to a specific radio. https://meshtastic.org/docs/configuration/module/detection-sensor/ The second application came from some scrounging in my junk drawer. I had some unused 3.3 volt Bosch BME280 temperature/barometer/humidity sensors from a weather station project. They are very popular and available for under $5. Four wires including power/ground connected to the user pins on the radio is the hardware. Enabling it in the Telemetry Config menu turns it on. Now you or anyone in your network can view the current conditions at the radio's location. https://meshtastic.org/docs/configuration/module/telemetry/ In previous postings I've shown how you can run these Meshtastic radios remotely using solar power year around. Put this all together and you can have a remote, self powered node that can observe it's environment. 73 Mike N0QBH

A tale of two Baofeng UV5R radios
3
#radios
#VaraFM
Awhile ago I ordered a cable assembly from Digirig for the Baofeng UV5R model handheld radios. The cable is prewired for the Digirig and comes with a second programming cable that uses the Digirig's serial capabilities allowing a program like Chirp to read and write the radio's program memory. My reason was to see if the inexpensive $35 Baofeng radio will work with VARA FM and Winlink for nearby stations accessing the W0AYE-10 gateway. The results? Yes and no. I have two of these radios, one a few years old and the other purchased in the past year. Both UV5R model. The old one works VARA FM like a dream and seems to be a rival to the Yaesu FT-60 I've been using. The new UV5R with identical settings, on the other hand, is unable to complete a connection with the gateway. It's transmit to receive turnaround time is way too slow for VARA causing the incoming data to be missed. Searching the Internet showed this to be a very common issue with the Baofengs and VARA FM. What remains unclear is if the problem is model change related or variations within same models. If you have one and want to find out, I can probably test it before you spend $35 on a cable set. For folks planning to use handheld radios, invest in a gain antenna around 2' long. Night and day difference in signals. 73 Mike N0QBH

Sunday Night Net while Tony's away
#netcontrol
#repeater
Tony WD0HXV is heading to 7 land to hang out with his dad W0BAM for the month of February, so myself and others will be trying to fill in as Net Control. One of the things we want to try is a before the net rag chew on 146.91 starting around 15 minutes before the net at 6:45. That way Hams who want to chat with other members are likely to run into them on the air. The test net itself will remain the same at 7:00 pm, going through all three machines starting with the 146.910 then 147.03 and 444.800 last. This way we are done in plenty time for those who participate in the Litchfield net @ 7:30. Hope to hear everyone Sunday eve. 73 Mike N0QBH

#winterfieldday
Save the date! At the pleasure of the Club's President I am hosting a Winter field day event at my QTH on Jan. 25th. More details to follow. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out here, on Winlink, or you can find my email on QRZ. Before you ask my radio shack is climate controlled, has plenty of room, and most recently a functioning latrine. We won't be roughing it too hard on Minnesota's frozen tundra. I hope to see you there.

I just came across a new Winlink net local to our neck of the woods. It's not the typical Winlink Wednesday check in and forget format and looks to be an interesting one to join. APRS using HF VARA

#VARA
Here's a new rabbit hole to go down that could be rather interesting. I used to do HF APRS with a MFSK16 tracker I designed and built. It worked surprisingly well, but HF mobile operators are scarce. Fast forward 15 years and they are doing it much better with VARA. Stephan Smith WA8LMF is the stateside "guru" tho I will warn you, he's abrasive and doesn't suffer fools. He's an engineer in the mold of Sheldon at times. http://wa8lmf.net/VARA/APRSoverVARA/ I'm think about trying the Pinpoint version with my VARA HF station. 73 Mike N0QBH

How I improved my VARA FM speed 3x
4
#VaraFM
Awhile back I exchanged computers in my VHF VARA FM shack from a laptop to a solar powered Bmax B4 mini PC. Right away I noticed the 4 signal "dots" in the diagram display went from being tight centered dots to somewhat splattered "dots" when I was connecting to the gateway. I wasn't able to adjust it out and just assumed it was the new normal for this PC. Also, it didn't seem to affect performance as it was before the Willmar gateway was connected to the Internet. After we got on line and it was easy to order up large attachments to download from the catalog, I noticed the throughput from the gateway to my station wasn't as fast as I remembered it. Since around 40k/minute is pretty fast anyway, I didn't worry about it. Fast forward to this past week. As a solar operator I call it "h_ll week" because the days are the shortest and it's often cloudy. This tests the system and I found 3 days was where I ran outta gas if the station(s) were operating 24/7. Good to know. Today being the 4th day had me switching my hardware over to the grid so I could continue to operate... Ok, play. :) The first thing I noticed when I useded the mini PC on a wall wart was the dot's in the signal diagram were round and very tightly grouped again when connecting with VARA FM. Hmmm. I ordered up a 50k weather file and was blown away at how fast it downloaded from the gateway - 120k/min!! I did a few more to prove it wasn't a fluke. Nope, no fluke. The other thing I noticed was how the diagram had 32 squares instead of 16. VARA figured out my system had better hearing and used it. I swapped power sources back and forth til I narrowed it down to a undersized, unshielded, too long cable powering the mini PC. Moral of my story - learn to trust your visual indicators. In this case power supply noise was going out the mini PC USB to the Digirig, raising it's noise floor dramatically. This was like tatters in it's ears. 73 Mike N0QBH

Solar Mesh node power experiment
9
#Meshtastic
One of the issues operators have with remote solar powered anything and lithium batteries is cold weather. They don't like to be charged at below freezing temperatures. Thanks to another user I discovered a possible method of preventing battery damage using a Thermal reed switch. It appears to be a normal magnetic operated reed switch with a substance called Thermorite orientated as a magnet. According to the spec sheet, Thermorite is a ferromagnetic substance who's magnetism decreases with rising temperature. Depending on the recipe, it can be made to operate at specified temperatures. I've ordered one to switch open at freezing (0C). It will be in contact with the lithium battery and the switch in series with the 5W solar panel. Specs say it can handle 10W. Anytime the battery is too cold, no charging will occur. If it works out, the next thing will be to see how much storage I need to get thru the sunless days. Here's a link to the data sheet. Digikey carries them. Not cheap at $30 ea. https://search.kemet.com/download/datasheet/TRS1-0MSR01EV 73 Mike N0QBH
