Locked VaraFM Gateway News

For those interested, the W0AYE-10 VaraFM gateway is now installed in the amateur radio room at the Kandiyohi County EOC located in Willmar. The gateways' antenna is an omni directional vertical on top of the EOC's 60' tower. The gateway radio is a Yaesu FTM-6000 using a Digirig soundcard running 25w. I have changed the gateway frequency to 145.070 MHz to stay inline with other emcomm Winlink frequencies in Minnesota.?

Thanks, I've been trying to connect, but it's too far for me here. Just breaks squelch.

Link study from my QTH attached.

That's a neat graphic. Does the light brown represent local terrain?
Here's from above.

Here, this should be more readable, ,ya brown should be earth and stuff, Red is like man made object I believe.

Used to hear the railroaders talk about the "Atwater hill" that eastbound Willmar trains had to ascend.
Just enough hill to ruin the path between Litchfield and Willmar with modest antennas.

FWIW I tested from my QTH to the Willmar gateway at low power with an indoor 1/4 wave antenna and could connect and xfer email, but no attachments.

I'm 8 mi from the EOC. Line of sight atop my 60' tower, not so much from indoors.
However, the indoor set up works with the WILMAR packet node @ 400'.? Just no substitute for altitude.

Eventually, they would like the gateway antenna ~ 150' up and in a less "RF busy" environment.?

And, for folks with no Winlink FM access, there's always VARA HF.
