Locked Line of sight communications...

Considering our VHF and up communications are normally line of sight between the transmitter and receiver, here's why DX without enhanced propagation is so hard.

Interesting Mike,

Remember when we built the Vampire Link on UHF?
446.125 MHZ. I think it was, we were so gun-ho on getting the link up, in retrospect, in the beginning, I wonder how much we thought about path loss, and curvature of the earth? If I remember right, we were trying to one-hop a 68 mile path,? What a crazy FUN? bunch we were back then.

A couple of years after it was going, Roger W0WUG (sk) got some propagation modeling software to test and review for one of the industry magazines.
We plugged in the data for the path from my QTH to the Cold Spring site @ 1400'+ and there were two knife edge diffraction zones that probably made it work.

Each bent some of the signal downwards from a high spot along the path curving it from going off into space.

Because of the tall location Dan Karg K0TI had at the metro end, there was a clear path to Mpls from Cold Spring.

Mike,,

Pretty cool, considering what had to be overcome.?
Anyway!? Those days are gone. But never forgotten.?
PTSD never goes away, Like the death of a loved one, or a friend, you just get used to it.
