They can be used as the air source, but only operate at one pressure, the exhalation occurs due to muscular contraction against the force (as I'm sure you are aware as a user :) so a CPAP alone is not a suitable option. However, in combination with a valve switching system, they can be used. Many groups are working on this currently. They are relatively cheep and plentiful, and many are capable of providing the needed pressure. And in cases where a unit cannot provide enough pressure, they can be stacked to increase the pressure.?
