Re: source code for the user interface
These (the TFT displays) are available in high quantities from multiple sources. We checked this very carefully before we started our ubitx (which uses this display as well). The controller it uses is

yup, but these people are willing to print $1T....so they don't care. That won't help people in 3rd world countries, so this little buggy we are working on may help many people. Thanks to all, gordon

Re: Start on a KiCad project... All through hole, or a mix of through hole and smd?
I would think SMD. While there's a little more startup costs for the PCB, the SMD parts are dirt cheap, light weight (low transport costs), and I think can be assembled more quickly. My vote is for

Re: Start on a KiCad project... All through hole, or a mix of through hole and smd?
A question... I'd intended using through hole for all parts on the preliminary schematic attached as part of this thread - including resistors, caps and such. This with the wish that hand assembly be

Re: source code for the user interface
I think Farhan is using a 2.8" 320x280 TFT screen using the SPI interface. If so, those are available for about $9. (See eBay #264476244273). The bad news is that it is from China. Perhaps Farhan has

Re: RS-232 connector is a problem
Yes these are also very good. Due to working on defence designs by default I go for metal connectors! If ashar has already used the 9pin rs232. A good coating of RTV. Silicone will do for proto!

Re: RS-232 connector is a problem
Personally, I have used Lemo, Fischer etc. but for this app, I like the Hirose HR30 or similar, cheaper and good quality. See the attached data sheet. -- Howard W2HFF
