Rumours concerning a new album from The Amnis Initiative 5
According to sources uncomfortably close to the artist, "Work on the next album is progressing well. The music was actually finished a while ago but I've since decided to expand the concept into a double album. A few more tracks to finish, before starting the whole artwork and CD production phase" Code "bcfriday2025" will save you 35% of the cost of any item[1] today, which is BandCamp Friday. Vangelis - The Unkown Man - Complete (book) 3
This was posted by Mark Griffin on FB a couple of days ago: https://www.facebook.com/groups/230927250251897/?multi_permalinks=9638414822836379&ref=share "Vangelis – The Unknown Man – Complete! As some of you may know since writing “Vangelis : The Unknown Man” more than 25 years ago I’ve been working on a number of other books and projects, most recently three works - a feature film, book and documentary about the mysterious death of Lawrence of Arabia. Since the passing of Vangelis in 2022 I’ve had a growing tsunami of emails asking me if I am going to update to complete the Vangelis story. Up until December 2024 I really hadn’t got the “head room”. Until now. I’m therefore pleased to announce that since 2022 I have been chipping away at creating a new edition of the book and since Christmas I have been putting more serious effort into it and hope to complete a first draft by February. I am aware of a number of other writers who plan to write their own Vangelis book but I’m not aware of anyone close to publication. The new version, like the old, will be “fan driven” and will avoid deep analysis of his personal life but focus as it did before on his work. I am therefore keen that there is input from Vangelis’ fans and followers – you - including a “fan wall” in the book, rare photo’s taken by fans and fan review’s of albums. More on this in future posts! The book was originally 180 pages and my vision if for it to be more like 280-300 pages including a fan review of each album, more photos, more input from collaborators, a fan wall etc while removing some sections which with the technology we have 30 years on can be removed. I’m also hoping the book will be published in English (definitely!), Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Greek and Italy though this will depend on publishers supporting the project – I do have some publishers interested in the new version in other languages. I’m hoping at the least the English version will be ready by October 2025 but there is much work to do. For now, my thanks to those who’ve been pushing me to get the complete edition done and for your support and, it is a testament to Vangelis your continued support and interest in the maestro. I will of course be posting regular updates and requests for input and I of course welcome and feedback or ideas you have. See You Later…Mark" -- Imre Olajos

State of Independence 4
Really interesting six-minute video about Donna Summer/Quincy Jones' cover of "State of Independence". Its influence on Michael Jackson's Thriller especially Billy Jean is acknowledged by Quincy Jones.

Direct 35
For those who are interested in the technical details of the gear Vangelis used to make music, it appears the very first Direct machine (custom-made for Vangelis and used by him between 1988-1993-ish) is now in the process of getting restored: https://zyklus-mps.com/archives/category/blog -- Imre

My introduction to the Master 18
For me it was Christmas 1975 when the 16 year old me was given a small transistor radio for a Christmas gift. I put my little earphones on and sat listening to late night radio and there it was. A track from Heaven and Hell. I can’t remember which movement was played except that it blew me away! I’d never heard anything quite like it before and it set me off on a quest to find as much as I could from this mysterious Greek chap who had fired up my musical imagination. The rest as they say, is history! Tony Doherty

Ground control to Uncle Don
Aris, > Uncle Don ... Is he still on this list? List subscriptions are private and only visible to admins, so we'll have to wait and find out if Uncle Don sees and answers your question. Though not updated since 2013, it's good to see that the Vangelis Collector site[1] is still online as it's an invaluable resource. [1] http://vangeliscollector.com/ -- -Andrew J. Direct / Introduction to Vangelis
My introduction to Vangelis couldn't have had a more profound effect on me. It was early 1981 when the TV documentary 'Cosmos' was first shown here. I was 14. The breath of music on 'Cosmos' was one of the many reasons I loved that series. The Main Title (Heaven & Hell, of course) stuck with me. Soon after I was introduced to 'the Unknown Man' compilation o cassette (I still have it). Thus began the fabulous musical journey with the unique Vangelis.

Help with Greek lyrics 17 songs Maria Farantouri 12
Dear all, As you know, I have had the Vangelis lyrics site for many years (1996!) There are 2 songs by Maria Farantouri, of which I only have the scans from the CD booklet of the Greek lyrics of her songs, but only as a picture and not as a written text in Greek. I have already found the song: Τ?ρα ξ?ρω / Tora xero on a Greek site and was able to add it. I cannot find the other 2 songs on the internet. Are there perhaps Greek fans who can convert the text of the picture into Greek text? It concerns the following 2 songs: San Elektra and: Odi a for details see: https://www.vangelislyrics.com/vangelis-lyrics-collaborations/vangelis-maria-farantouri-17-songs-lyrics.htm I would like to hear from anyone who can help me with this. Thanks in advance! Henk Engelen

Beyond - Ode to the Earth
Reading all the wonderful reviews of this film, I can only hope it will be delivered to a wider audience soon. Although I suspect its true impact can only be experienced on big movie screens, I hope the creators will consider working with one of the major streaming platforms so many more people can see the natural beauty of Earth as narrated by the wonderful music of Vangelis. -- Imre

"Tears in the Rain" 2
I am watching the Vangelis doc for the N'th time. This is something that's been around my head since a couple of decades ago. The famous Rutger Hauer impro : "I've seen things . . . . All those things will be lost in time like tears in the rain" What an amazing impro that makes the film even more legendary. However I can't help but think : Has Ruger ever listened to Aphrodites Child and the famous track "Rain and Tears" . I am not saying he plagiarized but even if he did , the outcome was amazing and definitely no harm done . Quite the opposite. But I am just thinking . . . . s. ---- "I merely function as a channel that filters music through the chaos of noise" - Vangelis

666 Deluxe Edition
Hi, All, We'll here's something interesting. There's going to be a 4CD + Blu-Ray Deluxe Edition release of 666 in November! I saw this in the Burning Shed newsletter. It doesn't give the label. I'm guessing Esoteric who have released other Vangelis remasters. I've quoted the description from the newsletter below. There's one obvious error. Although Costas Ferris wrote lyrics for the album, I've never seen him anywhere described as a member of the band. Has anyone heard otherwise? Of course the highlight of the set will be the Blu-Ray with a 5.1 mix!!! Gary Aphrodite’s Child 666 - The Apocalypse Of John (CD/Blu-Ray / Vinyl pre-order) Aphrodite's Child’s astonishing concept album 666 - from 1972 - is a masterpiece of Progressive and textural experimentation helmed by band members Vangelis and Costas Ferris. This limited box set edition contains remastered versions of the original album mix and the rare 1974 Greek LP version (which featured considerably different mixes to the original LP release), along with a Blu-Ray disc featuring 96 kHz / 24-bit Atmos, 5.1 up mixes, a stereo mix, and a 28-minute episode of the French television show Discorama from June 1972 featuring Vangelis talking about the album. The boxed set includes a book featuring a new essay and original interviews with the band plus many previously unseen photographs that Vangelis sourced from his various archives around Europe. Pre-order for November 11 release. -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. www.avast.com

Vangelis rehearsing with Yes 5
Hi all, It's a well-known story that Vangelis briefly rehearsed with Yes in 1974. The band were looking for a new keyboardist to replace Rick Wakeman who left the band to pursue a solo career after their infamous Tales from the Topographic Oceans album. Though Vangelis didn't end up joining the band (Yes went with Patrick Moraz in the end), it's a fascinating story, especially since so little is known about it. (By the way, this is how Steve Howe, Yes' guitarist, recalled the sessions and the reasons why it didn't work out: https://hit-channel.com/interview-steve-howe-yes-asia-solo/) Why am I writing this to you? Because a true gem just surfaced - actual photos from the rehearsal sessions! https://www.facebook.com/groups/yesfanclub/permalink/10160261795212400 Regards, Vojtech

Vangelis Live Release 2
Hi, All, It's come to my attention that there is a live Vangelis album on Spotify - Live in Brussels 1979. I don't use spotify myself and wondered if anyone has checked this out. Most of the tracks are from the China album with a couple tracks from Albedo 0.39 and Ignacio. How's the quality of this? Does it sound like an official release or a bootleg? Supposedly it was released earlier this year. Gary -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. www.avast.com

Vangelis and formal musical knowledge 18
I recently found out from a friend that Vangelis did not actually know music. I find this astonishing, considering how rich and complex his music is! My question is: Did he know how to read and write music? (i.e. using traditional musical notation). Has he ever explicitly talked about that? Best, Dionysis.
