The Vanatic Who Came in From the Cold
4
So… I last posted to this list about four years ago. I unsubscribed during the lockdown, aghast by Van’s descent into the abyss of anti science, anti-lockdown blah blah blah. My alienation was so profound that I stopped listening to any of his music, until the song from Belfast was originally released. But time can heal and rather than engage in the willful amnesia that too many fellow Americans have about the pandemic (which aided the return of Trump), I had an epiphany that since the lockdown was the most stressful time in my life, during which my mind wasn’t ideally clear, I should certainly give Van some slack. My only remaining qualm is if his embrace of conspiracy theories was only due to…money. I read this piece, which may or may not have been posted here. It reads in part “…Considering his healthy suspicion of capitalist forces, where did it all go wrong? Why did he become an anti-lockdown nut?…The answer again comes down to the big bad dollar. Morrison claimed to have been independent of the music business since the late 1970s…and because he’s self-funded, touring is a vital revenue stream. Lockdown put him…in a terrifying financial limbo…” It’s difficult for me, all things considered and all global losses during the pandemic, to empathize with the interruption of a millionaire’s cash flow, as with Musk’s Tesla sales’ plummeting. Anyway, I have a lot of the prolific curmudgeon’s music to catch up on. Best, Harry

Edinburgh Review
https://theedinburghreporter.co.uk/2025/04/van-morrison-live-in-edinburgh/ ""It’s a fresh Spring night in the city centre and an eclectic group of fans file into the elegant splendour of the Usher Hall. With no support, Van Morrison walks on stage at 7.55 pm looking slim in a neat light blue suit and white Panama hat." Van's Memoir Book
12
Comes as a surprise but a memoir book by Van is completed and is soon to be released by Penguin Random House. Can't wait to read it. Penguin has released the opening passage and it's a good one. "The first time I picked up a guitar, it felt like a conversation I'd been waiting to have my whole life. Born in Belfast, surrounded by a city of stories and sounds, I was never sure where I ended and the music began. My childhood was a blend of joy and tension, a melody of wonder mixed with the weight of the world's quiet struggles. There was always something in the air, a kind of longing that you could hear in the hum of the streets and feel in the silence of the night. That's where it all started - before the fame, before the songs that would come to define a generation, there was just me and the music, trying to make sense of it all." Bhumi chuffed

Four Trappist Monks Eat Dinner
https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/bob-dylan-bizarre-silent-dinner-party/ “It was just surreal,” Hansard recalled of his date with the stars. “It was at a Dylan show in Dublin, and I was standing in a spot where Van grabbed me and we all went to dinner. I don’t know how these guys’ brains work. I don’t know if it’s Asperger’s or autism. But the whole meal was silent. No one said anything.” Bhumi

Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts One Of These Days Capitol Theater 9/23/24 [4K] youtube.comI’ve always liked Neil acoustic and Iove the harmonica break he takes here, not usually done on this song either live or the studio version. As much as I love Neil (recorded him in Sept at the Cap - he was terrific - and seeing him at Jones Beach on 8/23) I’m not thrilled with Van in small print below even Cat Stevens ? No I get it, Van is somewhat an acquired taste. If pressed I’d probably say he and Neil are my all-time favorites. Wish I could go, have fun & look forward to reading your report.. Transatlantic Session 2025, Oxford
4
8th February 2025 I’m a bit late filing this year’s ‘Jez Goes To Transatlantic Sessions’ copy. Things to do. I seem to be busier now than before I retired ten years ago. Anyhow, my mate Paul and I headed to The New Theatre, Oxford for this year’s event. Shortish boring story: the initial announcement of the tour had Oxford as the most southern venue. My lovely wife, Sue, suggested that it would be a good place to have a weekend away together, so I bought the tickets and booked a hotel! Two weeks later a show at my usual destination, the Southbank Centre, was announced. Bugger! Sue appreciates the talent of the musicians but isn’t a massive music fan, and she was beginning realise that a weekend away in early February might not be as thrilling as it seemed at first. Then the guest list for the tour was announced, and one of them was a big favourite of my mate Paul. Sue graciously gave up her ticket but, as good a mate as he is, a weekend away in a posh hotel with Paul didn’t appeal, to either of us. So I ended up driving a 200 mile round trip to Oxford with a three hour concert in the middle. And boy, was it worth it. The review I’ve posted below (the link covers other Celtic Connections concerts and is worth a read) lists all the performers and the set list so I’ll just add some of my own thoughts. There has been a pattern in recent years of including two North American acts, a Scottish or Irish established folk singer and an up and coming Scottish or Irish singer-songwriter. For various reasons it hasn’t always worked, but this year it was pretty near spot on. Niall McCabe as the ‘up and comer’ was excellent. Witty, engaging, verbally sparring with other performers and he could really sing. I’m kind of embarrassed to say that I knew too little about Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams before they were announced for the tour. I watched a few videos after they were announced and thought they were good without being WOW! Live they were brilliant, demonstrating again that nothing beats live music. Larry must be one of the coolest guys around. A true multi-instrumentalist, he joined in with the Houseband when he wasn’t centre stage, and was the fourth fiddle in a brilliant finale and encore. Theresa was wonderfully full on, and her vocals were outstanding. She corrected what she’d at previous shows when introducing ‘Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning’; it wasn’t written by Reverend Gary Davis but by Blind Willie Johnson. Larry and Theresa’s performance of it was one of the stand-outs of the night. Little more needs to be said about Julie Fowlis. I’ve seen her several times, in Transatlantic Sessions shows and in concerts with her band. She is never less than indescribably wonderful. She always sings beautifully – although my Gaelic is no better than it was 15 years ago – and plays the whistle to accompany herself or in the Houseband. She also sang back-up to the other performers, as each performer did. Loudon Wainwright III was the person that my mate Paul was so keen to see, and he didn’t disappoint. As amusing and entertaining yet still as sensitive as expected, he shared some great stories of friends and family to introduce his songs. A true legend. The Houseband were, as ever, exceptional. No Phil Cunningham this year. Jerry explained that he had some pressing family business but he’ll be back next year (as, God willing, will I). Daniel Kimbro and John Doyle did their own entertaining solo spots and Jerry Douglas, with some of the Houseband, performed an instrumental which he’s “trying to get Alison Krauss to play. I know she can sing, but anybody can sing”. The Houseband appear on two tracks on Eric Clapton’s most recent album. One of them, Sam Hall, was the song he performed (and still does) a couple of years ago, as a guest performer, as a tribute to Jeff Beck. You can find it on YouTube, talking of which I can find very few videos of this year’s Transatlantic Sessions tour. Two, to be exact: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0oktMjEqjg Julie Fowlis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJwoftGfG9M The Houseband kick it off Van
