Not seeing the right window opening after download and install.. Youtube videos show a different window than Iam seeing.. After downloading I see VARA Chat v1.4.1, Winlink Express 1.7.20.0, and VARA HF v4.8.9.. In the VARA HF window The SoundCard - Tune Transmits a steady tone and a signal is being transmitted. View is :Gauges-Waterfall-Diagrams , Monitor is ON.but nothing is seen on transmit. Sometimes a line addressed to ALL is seen. in VARA Chat window. Ken Johns WN8Y JACKSON TN

I finally got vara HF running on Winlink express. However, I dan't get the ALC to the recommended 1/3. It hovers around 3/4 on the scale. What might cause this?

I am new to VARA HF and to the group. Last week I set up my W11 computer and IC-7300 radio. I was able to start sending messages using Vara HF. I didn't use Winlink for a couple of days. When I tried to send a message a few days ago I could not connect to any station. I checked every sound setting I could find on my computer and reduced my transmit power. I don't know what changed. Yesterday I connected to two different stations, but both dropped the connection after more than 5 minutes into transmitting the message. The send rate was extremely low. Does anyone know what sets the modem speed for Vara? I suspect it is something in the connected client software. For example, Winlink changes the speed when connecting to various stations. I have been experimenting with Pinpoint with Vara for a mobile station. I don't see a way to change the speed from 500 to 2300. The position report works at 500 but takes 20 seconds which I think is way too long. Looking at WA8LMF's stations -6 is beaconing at 2300 and -5 is beaconing at 500. Stephen, please chime in here and tell me if I am correct. Also, I would like to know what is running -6. Wayne WA5LUY

I use a very common, simple, and fairly inexpensive solution to keying VARA FM on most any FM Radio. I use a DRA-30 (other DRA models will work too) to provide the sound card function and the PTT function. These ~$80 "Sound cards" provide good bandwidth and separate PTT control to most FM Radios. I have personally tried it without ANY radio modifications with the Alinco 50Watt DR-135 without any radio mods. I have also used the same setup (with the addition of a 15 pin DIN connector) on a Chinese TH-9000D with good results. Using a dedicated sound card for the application is the key to reliable operation with full VARA FM Wide bandwidth. Rick Muething, KN6KB Winlink Development Team

Unable to set up vara fm with my Alinco DR-185 with Signalink. Alinco is not listed in the radio brands. Packet Winlink works just fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all. New to VARA. I've gotten it to work with WInlink Express and my Kenwood TS890 radio with some success. One issue I can't seem to get to function 100% reliably or repeatable is when I select a channel in VARA , the radio ALWAYS follows the frequency so VARA is connecting to the radio, but only SOMETIMEs switches the mode to the correct USB-DATA mode (which is what I want). Sometimes, for example, when I select a channel, it goes to LSB voice. I DO have the USB-DATA mode checked in the VARA settings, it just doesn't seem to always work. Does anyone know where/how this is configured? Is there an option to add radio-specific code somewhere in the rig interface? I would love to be able to reliably get the VARA channel selection to always go to the correct mode. Ideally I would also like to add commands like to auto-configure the tx and rx bandwidths by adding appropriate commands. Thanks. 73s.

Hi all- First post here, I'm having somewhat of a unique issue from what I'm seeing (or the lack thereof I guess). Trying to chase down a low audio transmit via a Signalink on VARA FM, VARA HF, and also manifests on Soundmodem. I'm sure it's a stupidly simple thing that's a switch I'm not switching in the software. Basically I think the problem is that Win 11 Sound Mixer won't let me adjust the volume for the apps, as I can see it won't do that. I don't know how to convince Windows to let me do that. I've tried everything I can think of, including shutting off the Firewall temporarily to see if that's the issue. No joy. Best I can do is a partial connection using Soundmodem where I have to basically crank the transmit wattage from 5 to 30 and use the J3 jumper in Signalink and max both transmit and receive on the box. Symptoms are that I can take the same radio/SignaLink/antenna system with a Win 10 computer and everything is rock solid and works fine. I take it to Win 11 computer with all the setups the exact same with the exception of the volume slider on the sound mixer, and the only way I can get any success at all is with Soundmodem using the J3 audio max jumper within the Signalink. Signalink tech support says it has to be something stupid in Windows, I agree, but it's smarter than me. Again the issue isn't the radio, nor the signalink, it's got to be something within Windows. Has anyone ever encountered this and knows what stupid little thing I'm missing? Thanks!

I have been trying to get Winlink vara hf working with no success. I receive just fine, but cannot get the program to trigger the PTT function on the Ftdx10. Winlink works fine on telnet and on vara hf, I am receiving and it goes to Ready state. However, while the program is trying to transmit, the transmit does not occur on the Ftdx10. I've tried many different settings on both the PC and the radio. If I use a Signaling box, I can get it to go out, but for operational purposes, I prefer to go directly from the PC to the radio. Anyone have a similar issue that has been resolved? Thanks....

I am a new Var- AC user. I have had several strange experiences starting out. The initial usage was smooth enough. Then the comm port was seized by another process and the application could not communicate with the radio. I computer programmer friend of mine, who is also a ham suggested that I renumber the port to another number. That didn't work. My Elmer went in and set everything back to the original number. Thing started working again spontaneously without diagnosing or fixing the original comm port problem. So here is my immediate concern. The radio is transmitting e.g. beaconing and attempting to initiate a QSO. The problem is that the software isn't making it's usual noise when the radio is transmitting. Problem 2 is that when the radio transmits, it emits no sound when you listen to it with the monitor function. I have verified that it is on and that the volume is way up. Pskreporter verified that I actually transmitted. So what is going on? I have only done one QSO.

I have a station that I have successfully installed Vara AC on. I use Vara HF as my modem. I have separately installed VARA FM. I don't currently use it, because there are no gateways within range. I just came aware of people using VA AC with HT's and miles, including using other digital programs such as FLDIGI. It's particularly interesting, in that they are using DMR radios such as the Anytone D87UV HT. So the question is how go I use both the HF and FM versions of Vara? Is there a way to configure one copy of the program to allow you to choose which one you want to use for a particular session? Alternately can you run multiple copies of Var AC configured differently. Which is the preferred alternative? Thanks for your attention to this issue.
